The only thing that could improve that would be a wrap-around version with quick fastenings. Velcro is okay but has its limitations, so a hook and eye system might be needed to give it some robustness required of hiking clothing.

Steve Gough is scheduled for release on 14th of August. There are plans to whisk him away in a car before plod can arrest him, and take him to see his elderly mother.

The file download link below is a copy of a Daily Mail article.

Welcome to the new home of secret naturists Larry, the guys were beginning to worry about you!

Let the stories commence! ;D

I've taken all the ideas on board and I hope to come up with a prototype next February/March.

A simple kilt type wrap made from a light, quick dry material in neutral colours, with quick and easy fastenings seems to be the general consensus.

Any sketches or example photos would be useful, for the kilt and any other garment suitable for naturists in any environment!  I'll set up an email address for this project,  so get your thinking caps on and sketch pads at the ready!

General Naturism Discussion / Re: Naturist links

The organisation, of which I am a founding member, and director,  was originally set up by disaffected BN members annoyed that BN (at that time.) made no effort to campaign for the rights of naturists. We would like to think that we are influencing current campaigning policy in BN, and have even taken part in joint projects.

I prefer the term naturist because I feel that being free of clothing is a natural state, and the term nudist has been distorted by the media to mean something bad, even distorted to mean partially clothed, especially in the US, and I'll give you the "Naked cowboy" in New York as an example. He is not naked, and another term often used is "near naked" and I would suggest that you are either naked, or you are not, there is no "near naked".

Rather than try to invent new words or terminology I would prefer to defend the term naturist,  which has been mistaken,  or deliberately hijacked, to give sleazy establishments an air of respectability. I know of at least three placesin the UK that use the word 'naturist' in their title, but are swingers or gappy ending massage parlours.

A few years ago an establishment was advertising it's grand opening as a naturist bar, with details of exotic shows and naked pole dancers. They were approached by a representative of British Naturism and agreed to withdraw the use of the word 'naturism' when their error was explained to them.

About two years ago I initiated a meeting of naturist groups to discuss, among other things, a plan to make 'naturism' a protected word, unfortunately it didn't get much further than that.

If, as naturists, we don't take a stand, whatever new word or term we invent it will be hijacked by others, or distorted to mean something else.

So, I'm staying with naturist for the time being!

Thanks, Jbee!

Karla, Stuart & Ian et al.

Does the likelihood of running into disapproval on a naked hike decrease in the more remote and more difficult hikes? I can see not bumping into someone on a remote and difficult hike but as we've wondered before, about those who appreciate the outdoors, do people seem to be less concerned about seeing a naked person in a natural setting?

I am wondering this, taking into consideration, the reactions we see here in the US from the Scottish authorities. Is there a real difference between the attitudes of the people and the authorities? Does that affect how you plan your outings?

My personal experience is that seasoned walkers are generally more open minded that their urbanite cousins. While walking Offas Dyke we encountered walkers who weren't at all bothered, but a party of urbanites we bumped into, at the statrt of the Breacon Beacons stage of the walk, were quite uptight and vocal about encountering us.

It was quite obvious they were urbanites, the guys were wearing jeans and tee shirts, the gals wore summer dresses, and the footwear was totally unsuitable for anything other that s a short stroll, and no one carried a bag with water of wet weather clothes.

We even got a walking couple to take a picture of a couple of us, no problems, no worries.

Free Range Naturism / Re: Urinating while naked in free range areas

In Unity State, South Sudan the White Nile floods the area during the rainy season, but as the floods recede they leave behind lots of water holes that get used for urinating and defecating in, this of course raises the possibility of a cholora outbreak, a very deadly and contagious disease. We had a case of Cholora while I was at the hosptal, which meant we had to implement the contingency plan and open up the isolation ward. If you recall the scenes of the ebola outbreak you'll understand the measures taken to prevent cross contamination to staff and other patients. Transmission is mainly through drinking water contaiminated by bodily waste, or ingestion of airborne droplets. A face mask was enough to protect from airborne droplets of spittle in the case of cholera, but I understand that only full suits and full face resperators offer protection from ebola, which can enter the body through eyes too.

Working in South Sudan made me appreciate how lucky we are in the west, and especially so in the UK with the National Health Service providing free healthcare.

Welcome Nigel

I was hoping to bump into you sometime this year,  but here we are half way through the year already and no meeting.

Thanks for the welcome. My time in South Sudan was packed full of experiences, both good and bad but all life affirming. Sadly the town where I worked is once again beset with civil war, the local hospital staff, my friends,  have all fled into the bush, the expats evacuated to safety.

Sadly there was no opportunity for naked recreation, except in my own mud hut, and that was purely for comfort.

Yes I've been back four years now, my most recent travels have been to South East Asia, where the naturist lifestyle has taken a foothold. I'm already planning my next trip, which will hopefully include Cambodia.

That's a start, thanks Karla.
It could be a while before I can produce a prototype,  but you will be the Guinea Pig for the  'Karla freehikers skirt'.

The have been a number of incidents in South East Asia, Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country so they get a little uptight, but there have been other reports at ancient temples in Cambodia and Thailand.
Unfortunately these people are doing it for the kicks, just for the photograph, and quite the opposite of secret naturism, without a hint of discretion.

It's sad that the ideas and suggestions for quick cover-ups were lost when SNS fell off the internet, so perhaps we can start again.

I'm in the process of starting an online business providing such items of apparel for naturists, and I'll be taking a closer look at the links later, but I'm particularly keen to hear suggestions for cover-ups. I hope to be able to make prototypes for trials, and if I decide to market a particular design suggestion the originator will get a free garment. I'm also considering naming them after the person who suggested the design e.g. The Karla.

So, thinking hats on, and sketch pads ready.

Because I'll need to make a viable business I'll also be looking for designs useful to factory farmed naturists. This was inspired by the garment I acquired many years ago in Spain. I bought a hooded Moroccan dish-dash that I found extremely useful for those late night gatherings in a clubhouse or around the camp fire, useful as a sit on instead of a towel,  and easy to slip on when walking back through the cold night air to my camp site.

I'm open to suggestions for any kind of garment that would be useful in a  naturist environment. Obviously there are off the shelf clothes that will do, but why compromise when we can design something specific to our needs.

My experience of unabashed toilet habits in Germany was with a minibus load of newly trained RAF Air Movements Operators. We stopped for a comfort break at a rest area on an autobahn,  shortly after a coach stopped and the females went to the toilet block while the guys just found a tree to pee against. One guy chose a tree near our group,  which included a couple of WRAF's, and decided mid pee to strike up a conversation. One of the WRAF's had obviously had a very sheltered upbringing, judging by the look of horror on her face! For the  remainder of the journey she just wouldn't shut up about what she'd witnessed.

In France I saw a  hitchhiker turn away from the traffic and piss over the armco barrier, his magnificent shaft of gold illuminated by the sun!

In South Sudan it was a whole new experience for me too, I worked at a  hospital operated by a well known NGO, which was well frequented. It wasn't unusual to see men stop anywhere to pee, and it took me a while to realise that when I saw just a head sticking up above the thigh high undergrowth it was the women having a pee, or indeed a dump. I learned that it was best to stay on a well beaten path to avoid stepping in some unpleasantness someone had left behind, it was like walking through a minefield sometimes. Some people didn't even bother to step far from a path before  dropping to a squat, and I found myself having to take an alternative route on more than one occasion.
