I prefer the term naturist because I feel that being free of clothing is a natural state, and the term nudist has been distorted by the media to mean something bad, even distorted to mean partially clothed, especially in the US, and I'll give you the "Naked cowboy" in New York as an example. He is not naked, and another term often used is "near naked" and I would suggest that you are either naked, or you are not, there is no "near naked".
Rather than try to invent new words or terminology I would prefer to defend the term naturist, which has been mistaken, or deliberately hijacked, to give sleazy establishments an air of respectability. I know of at least three placesin the UK that use the word 'naturist' in their title, but are swingers or gappy ending massage parlours.
A few years ago an establishment was advertising it's grand opening as a naturist bar, with details of exotic shows and naked pole dancers. They were approached by a representative of British Naturism and agreed to withdraw the use of the word 'naturism' when their error was explained to them.
About two years ago I initiated a meeting of naturist groups to discuss, among other things, a plan to make 'naturism' a protected word, unfortunately it didn't get much further than that.
If, as naturists, we don't take a stand, whatever new word or term we invent it will be hijacked by others, or distorted to mean something else.
So, I'm staying with naturist for the time being!
