Free Range Naturism / Re: In Defense of World Nude Hiking Day

For those in the North east. The Solstice hike in Vermont.

The annual Naked Hiking Day (AKA summer solstice) nude hike will be on Thursday, June 20, 2024.  (That is the actual date of the solstice this year, thanks to leap year.).

As in many previous years, meet at the AT parking lot on Forest Road 10 (AKA Mt Tabor Rd) east of Mt Tabor, Vermont, at 9 a.m.

This year there will be two options.

The longer hike will be the same one done in many previous years. From the parking lot on Forest Road 10, participants will carpool to the start of the hike at the AT parking lot on Vermont Rt 140, 2.6 miles east of Wallingford. The hike will be approximately 10 miles long.  After 8 miles we will arrive at Little Rock Pond, offering an excellent skinny dipping opportunity.  The walk out to the Forest Rd 10 parking lot is then just 2 miles long.

A second option will be available for those who want something shorter than 10 miles.  It will depart from the parking lot on Forest Rd 10.  It is a loop that climbs up to the top of Green Mountain (which overlooks Little Rock Pond)m and then descends steeply down to the pond, where we may be able to rejoin the group doing the longer hike.  This option is about 6.5 miles long.  (Please let me know if you plan to use this option.)

Those who wish to join for an even shorter adventure can hike from Forest Road 10 to Little Rock Pond, about 2 miles each way.  The main group will probably arrive at the pond around 3:30 or 4 p.m.

After the hike, join us at Sam's Wood-fired Pizza, 4478 Main St, Manchester VT, for dinner.

Camping is available at Emerald Lake State Park, about a 20 minute drive from the meeting point for the solstice hike.  No-fee camping is also available at the Big Branch shelter on the AT/Long Trail, about 1.2 miles south of the Forest Road 10 meeting point for the solstice hike

I don't post much, but a friend told me about this event in Howe caverns in NY west of Albany. It's the 6th annual Howe Caverns Naked in a Cave. Scroll down on the link and it's the fourth event. Nice way to cool of in the Summer.

The Vermont law regarding being illegal to remove your clothes is only in the public realm. So it would have no regards to what someone would do on private property, in a bar, or an entertainment setting.

I haven't heard of any plans for this year yet. There is another member of the Board from your area who usually posts the information about the hike. Unfortunately last years hike was only a small group of due to Covid, and the location was moved.

Hey JB I have done that hike several times. One year we had almost 20 in the group. We actually broke down to two groups to shorten the chain of hikers on the trail. Last year their were less than a dozen that participated in the hike. The hike is normally on a section of the Appalachian trail, but last year hit was done on a trail along Somerset reservoir. I will be doing the traditional hike along the Florida trail as I am now in Florida. As for the date of the hike my calendar and a google search show the Solstice is on the 20th. Happy trails.

Welcome Jerry from a former New Englander. I have spent many nude miles on trails in Vermont with no issues. Have you ever done the annual Solstice hike in Vermont?

I have made a couple of kilts in the past. I had found the pattern online but can't locate it currently. I did find this site that has instructions on making one. If you add a few inches on the front panel to accommodate the wrap feature, you can add the Velcro for the closure. Now you just need someone who can sew.

It's a Vermont thing folks. In Vermont it is legal to be nude in public. However it is illegal to get nude in public.  There are a few exceptions, in Burlington it is illegal to be nude in a city park. In Brattleboro they have a bylaw that precludes nudity. That was enacted back in the (90s?) after new reports of local teens hanging out nude in a parking lot playing musical instruments, and skate boarding etc.. After the news report several guys came in from out of state and would walk around the downtown area nude. The small businesses felt it created a negative atmosphere for their other customers. I have done a multitude of nude hikes, and biking in Vermont over the past years, as well as the WNBR in Montpelier. Now that I'm in Florida (still nude hiking) I miss the freedom of not having to worry about encounters. If only all states were so tolerant. If you check some of John P's post he has reported this as well.

Hi John, as usual an interesting report. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it this year. I was able to get in a 10 1/2 mile hike here in Florida though. Part of it on the Florida trail. It is good to see that Ed L who started the VT hike is still going strong. My last VT hike was in 2017 and if I remember correctly that was the 10th year of the VT hike. Hope to make it next year.

Hi John, I haven't seen you for a while. As you write about the VT hike it leaves me sadden that I am not able to attend this year.I moved to Florida the end of last summer, and had hoped to hit Vermont for a few weeks during the time of the Solstice hike. Unfortunately the house that I bought needs more work than expected, so I am having to do the work instead. I hope that by the time of the hike the weather has normalized for you. Give my best to the ANNEC crew, I'll be there is spirit. I will be doing a hike somewhere near me in Central Fl.

Bluetrain, when I would hike in Vermont I was always without a net, as far as clothing. Of course it is completely legal to be nude in public in most areas. The only things that I would carry in my pack would be food, water, sunscreen, towel, blanket,
( for relaxing by the water) wallet, keys, and my cell phone. In the hundreds of encounters over the years I have only had one negative reaction. That was from a middle aged woman we meet during a Summer solstice hike with a mixed group. I am now in Florida and am able to hike along a section of the Canaveral National seashore net free. Also exploring other areas.

A great item for removing pine sap from skin, or the paint of a car is WD 40. It won't try the skin as alcohol, and petroleum based products can and it won't harm the paint.

Actually the days aren't getting longer. A day is 24 hours. However the amount of daylight increases as the time of sunset becomes later, along with earlier sun rises. At least until July.

He has survived his strokes. However due to them he has had a lot of medical expenses. As a result he is in financial difficulty. He had sent an email out a few weeks ago asking for money for housing, and other expenses.

nenude, if you search Vermont in the box above it will bring up some of the hikes. While some of them are lengthy, you could do part of them. The hike mentioned under the summer solstice, can be done into the pond from the parking lot. That is a two mile hike from the lot to the pond.
