Bagging Crested Saguaros
« on: November 30, 2017, 08:08:21 AM »
This article is an adaptation of a story that I wrote of a day that DF and I spent exploring on ten miles of Tortolita Mountain trails. It was then published in The Naturist Society’s magazine “N” this last summer. I’ve added illustrative pictures from the day for this publication.

Another great read along with pictures as always. My question is about the mountain bikers. In all my travels I have only encountered one and he rode by so fast no words, glances or such could be exchanged. And I never saw him again although I have hiked that trail many times. I just wonder, have those two sen other naked hikers in that area?  Which then leads to speculation that there are more naked hikers that don't visit these forums?  If only there were a way to rach out to those lone wolf naturists and bring them into the fold. There by adding to our strength in numbers?  Just rambling thoughts.

Going uphill bikers have more time to interact. They are slower. Bikers often have their heads down.

Getting out on the trail, we are supposed to get a sense of freedom, nature, away from restraints, and good exercise to put positive chemicals into the brain function. Bikers see others undressed, free, obviously not behaving in concern for the expectation of a bicyclist and smiling...they're okay with it.

I'm certain that there are many many more people out there that get in nature, and skinny-dip, get naked and at least think about it. That is just natural to eventually get that way spending time on trails. It would be great to have statistics to back up my theory, but my common sense tells me that. Of people who I have spoken with that spend time on trails, like avid hikers and forest service workers, most have done some of the unthinkable...they got naked. Even a forest service work crew together for days in New Mexico.

The Naturist Society polls are of people in mostly urban/suburban areas, maybe liquored up one night and less inhibited. Nature gets people in a sense, liquored up, or high on a certain something.

Can you imagine packing on a trail where there is less facility to be private? The circumstance makes privacy less valued because it means going to more extremes, work. You can't even discretely take a piss without wandering off. Sleeping and sound is closer. There has to be a discussion about where to place the latrine. Clothing changes are more difficult. There is a better camaraderie and bonding on a trail. Frequency of contact promotes the liking of people (that has at least been studied). You are cooped up in boots and clothing all day and taking off clothing feels super great and refreshing. When water is a miracle to savor, the social constrictions don't make much sense. This is common among guys, and it becomes the culture of backpacking. When in mixed groups, these barriers are also broken down. People are more apt to bond and get natural in a natural setting. They act as they innately are programed to. So, I think that yup, there are many and much potential and therefore naked people, maybe not all quite like us, but there ARE many more of us.

I think that there would be many more still, if there was discussion, people see others doing it. The more important thing than how many are doing it, is that it is seen as a normal, healthy and a legitimate choice. Our behavior of being naked in nature is normal, healthy and a legitimate choice. Therefore, nudity needs to be seen that way across society. Anything else is just goofy.

But one of your best sets of rambling thoughts so far.

I think that's a really interesting thought too.  And intuitively (although my and our intuition is a bit biased!!), I feel that it must be right.  Thinking about before I realised I was a naturist, there came a moment (long forgotten and probably more extended in time than a single moment) when I must have had the feeling that I wanted to be naked and either by circumstance or conditioning in the textile world (poor souls they know not what they are!) didn't in fact get undressed.
But eventually I made the transition, perhaps with my first naked in nature experience, to realising not only that I wanted to be naked but to get naked for a bit!  Thus if I am not out on a limb of peculiarity, which by evidence of my colleagues here and millions of naturists worldwide, I know I am not, then we must reasonably securely conclude that there are a helluva lot of people out there who want to....but don't bother to do it either by societal conditioning, circumstance or whatever.  Of those there must also be a proportion who might...but shrink back from the tipping point to naturism.

I don't know how many of Spencer Tunic's naked photography crowd or the WNBR participants are naturists before the event but my equally tenuous guess is that a great majority* of them are ostensibly non naturists who relish the opportunity to get naked outside** and without fear of being branded with deviation or perversion tags.  Why any go back to normally being textile is the question ....but no answer suggests itself! But most must. :)

 * Because any random crowd will only have a very small proportion of naturists in it since at most optimistic UK estimates only 1/17 people report naturist/nudist experiences (ref: BN) and BN does not dwell on how many of those were 1 offs not repeated or occasional on holiday, therefore one might expect those crowds to be a majority of otherwise textile individuals.  Of course, they tend to attract naturists so have a higher proportion than the population but at maximally 6% it would be hard to believe that any specific locale could contain higher than, say, 1/5 naturists
** Whether appearing once or twice in a Tunic photo or WNBR but otherwise being a textile in itself immediately qualified everyone as a naturist/nudist is an open question.  I think to be a nudist there must be some element of habitual practice or at least thinking about periodically!
