Fuerteventura = Hotel Gran Natura
« on: July 23, 2018, 05:50:53 PM »
Apparently the rumours are true, and the Hotel Gran Natura on the Canary  Island of Fuerteventura has closed its doors. Not because of a lack of custom, but the site owners have doubled the rent, and a planned refurbishment would have cost 2 million euros. The upgrade was certainly needed - the rooms were not the most comfortable or well equipped that we have come across. We will miss one of the unusual features of the site in that it was possible to leave by the back gate naked, directly onto the foreshore of the Dunes national park, where public nudity is commonplace. No clothes required! Just as it should be.

Sorry to hear about the demise of such a jewel. Gotta wonder why they upped the rent so high. A little investment here and there might have sufficed.

There is a commercial property bubble here. I wonder if it is happening there, now. It attracts lots of greed and irresponsible policy.

If I recall correctly the property was semi-derelict before the Gran Hotel Natura took it over so I suspect the ground landlords decided that they could make more money by leasing it so somebody else - possibly in the textile market. However there are several other such semi-derelict properties at that end of the town and the beach at that point does not have any obvious appeal to textile holidaymakers so I suspect that their greed will be counterproductive.
There are not many textiles wanting direct access to a naturist beach and there seems to be plenty of naturists who are quite willing to dress in order to walk a couple of hundred yards to a beach so I suspect the operators of GHN will have moved on elsewhere.
I strongly suspect that the new "Petit Natura" on Gran Canaria is operated by them and will report back when I return from a week there in November.

Excellent news, JOhn!
Another trip report in the offing and from a new place.  I await with baited tenterhooks! :)
