The Naked Rancher
« on: September 10, 2020, 05:28:18 AM »
A different kind of "Free range" here!

This is in Montana, but being reported from England. The Metro is pretty scurrilous--should we believe it?

We live fairly close to Montana. It's nice country.  Bitter cold winters though.  He has a lot more land than us, and we don't herd cows, but our neighbor does.   I'm out naked on my land all summer.  I can relate to chopping wood naked

I wouldn't class the Metro as scurrilous so much as lightweight, but maybe that's a language thing. The tale does bring to mind a "journalist" I used to know who had a good line in money-making. He would come up with a suitably frothy story - something faintly outrageous but harmless - and get some crony to go along with it. One that springs to mind was the man who loved Christmas so much his house was permanently decorated and he had turkey and all the trimmings for dinner every day. Suitable pictures were taken (this was pre-smartphones so a photographer had to be in on it), the story was written, and sold to less-than-inquiring outlets, with the photographer and story subject getting a cut. Readers were entertained, no one got hurt, no one took things too seriously and the world kept turning. Once such an "odd world" tale has appeared in a semi-reputable journal it will get picked up and repeated around the world, with suitable payments being made of course.

Our man in Montana could be one of those. Or he could be for real - doubtless several of us on this site would like to be in his position so it's not impossible.

I'm sure there are a few guys around named Richard Powers, but this rancher is named Dick Powers. Well, if this report makes him famous, we'll learn more. Could he start a new business running a nude dude ranch?

(A "Dude ranch" is a ranching operation where a lot of the income comes from guests who go to play at being cowboys/cowgirls.)

I get to Montana just about every year, a lot more often than I get to Arizona.   The site with the story doesn't give enough contact information to go visit him.  Maybe he should open a nudist dude ranch.

Tourists from cities has become a significant form of income for a lot of small farms.
