I thought maybe something sick.
Bears will spook, evaluate and then act. I don't know of any other southwestern animal that I've know to do that, but human. Perhaps somebody grazing on a rotting carcass that they found? Rummaging around in a den filled with refuse from previous meals.
My mind was definitely clicking, searching for references, but certainty came up with about as good as a Bigfoot. Anybody big, unseen and that close gets my mind a'clickin'. It is fortunate that fright and flight are nature's mainstays. Knowing this, I'll relax more easily when encountering the unknown. Still taking pause to evaluate will change unwanted surprises.
Even being naked in nature, we are the oddity to the locals. We smell weird, make odd noises, monotone vocals, make noises with our two feet, strangely no fur, as well as bigger and taller. What's a critter to think, or do? At least most know to stay away from those dangerous clothed humans, which smell even weirder, and certainly worse, and fortunately, often at least give lots of warning, as they disturb the true business of life, with loud callings, breaking branches and ignorant habits.
