What I find most disturbing is just the over reaction to innocent childhood behavior, it was the aggressive intrusion of "a neighbor". Some neighbor.
Several years ago we had a little tempest brewing in our corner of the neighborhood. Our dog, which was a Heinz 57 but had the markings of a German Shepherd, the body of a Husky, the coloring of a Chow and the tail of an Akita. Big beautiful dog. She was protective of our kids and her home and she always barked at anyone approaching. Many other dogs in the area also barked. Imagine that!
A "neighbor", did not like the noisy barking of our dog and reported us to the authorities. We were contacted by mail, not the neighbor, in regard to this. We responded that we would be happy to talk in arbitration to discuss times when this happened. Why had the neighbor not simply come over to talk? Police have real crimes to deal with instead of some little complaint in a neighborhood dispute. The officer said the message would be passed on.
We persisted over time in insisting on meeting whoever was complaining. The whining, sorry complaining ceased. We never found out who the people were that were complaining. If only they had come over to talk, we could have settled it without annoying the police dept. I suspect that the police get frustrated with these idiotic calls, and I don't blame them.
If the person that initiated the confrontation in Canada had just knocked on a door, all would have been well. It's the willingness to impose an ideology through a proxy, the police, that I find disturbing.
