I had to contemplate that strategy. I’d like to add as follows. Before that tipping point, there is a point where the authority feels the need to crack down. This can be either strategy to nip it in the bud, or get recognition for stopping the possibility, or be overwhelmed by its prevalence, either backing down or meeting it head on with war. We have seen these in free beach situations and public lands, handled differently in different jurisdictions.
When the media gets involved, they will declare the incident a singular naked person, a movement, or something in between. I think that this determination depends on how they perceive the viewership, or readership. If enough of us post comments, write letters, or make calls, or show up, they will tailor the message to pro-nudity, or just a curious harmless incident where they get people to have interest with a pic of a bare butt and let the imagination flow. Even more of influence, is the media’s message and massage, which gets to people when at home relaxed and more of them.
Perhaps naked hikers are more accepted because they have been part of the landscape.
For example, that incident in Topeka last summer. A guy was walking down the street naked. The news caught it and interviewed some ignorant intellectually half-ass trailer trash getting all upset shouting, “What about the children” on TV. There was no law to enforce, so the council got pulled in with the same outraged person, perceived as representing a larger social segment, this influencing them. Cards, letters, emails, came into the council offices, but along with it, well practiced and informed and validated testimony came to them from professionals, plus threat of expensive lawsuits to a fiscally conservative government. Those influences got it swept into chambers for more research, until things died down. Most likely there won’t be another naked rambler for a while. My point being that too much nudity too soon, and where it occurs, can throw a road block in the way of lots of free people creating a tipping point.
Keep those responsible sounding cards and letters pouring in folks. The anti-nudes are a very clear minority as it is, but too many don’t yet realize this. Those BN and NAC polls are good content in with ones remarks.
The tipping point is coming and the media will swing the perceptions, through bandwagon mentality, through personal identification with the norm, emphasis on privacy rights, through threat from the over reaction to a matter of small consequence, and what sells papers to whom, etc.
