Hike in Vermont, May 7
« on: April 15, 2016, 05:49:02 PM »
Our hiking group has a hike scheduled for May 7 on the west side of Harriman Reservoir opposite the Ledges; it's an old railroad grade that runs the length of the lake. The plan is to spot cars at the northern end, west of Wilmington, at 10:15 a.m., so we can start the hike from the dam at the southern end no later than 11 a.m. You'll be able to choose between hiking the whole 9 miles over five hours (including lunch) or, as at least one couple is planning to do, hiking in a couple miles and then returning to the dam. Last year the two toughest members of the group had a swim along the way. That's strictly voluntary!

On this map, the rendezvous point is reached from Route 9, if you take the bridge over the West Deerfield at the point marked "Medburyville":

I'm passing this on for the benefit of anyone who might be able to attend, but I'll still be in England then. I hope by May 7 I'll have been walking with the new Naturist Ramblers!

More detailed information:
A number of us are planning a nude hike on May 7 (rain date May 14) on the west side of Harriman Reservoir (opposite the Ledges) in southern Vermont.  The trail is a snowmobile trail on an old railroad bed, pretty flat but with side trails down to the water where we will eat our lunch.  Participants can choose to do the entire 9-mile trail over five hours (including lunch) or to hike partway and then return to the starting point by the dam.  We will have to spot cars at the north end of the trail for those doing the whole trail.  The plan is to meet at the north end, near Wilmington Vermont, at 10:15 a.m. to spot cars, then drive to the starting point at the south end of the lake to begin the hike no later than 11 a.m.

Please contact me at n8cherluvr@yahoo.com if you would like to join us.  We will announce a go-no-go decision (depending on the weather) the day before.

SEPTO DE MAYO VERMONT HIKE

Two days should be enough recovery for those of us in the New England area who choose to follow the dubious tradition of celebrating that other made-up holiday.   How about a bracing nude hike in Southern Vermont on May 7.    Our New England based naturist hiking club ANANEC will be celebrating our annual "icebreaker" nude walk on that day.   For a couple of years in a row, we have been doing this nine mile hike in the nude as a way to get out and enjoy the early spring sunshine and to limber up our muscles and rusty frames in preparation another season of free range, clothing free rambling and especially for Ed's upcoming annual June 20 Summer Solstice hike on the Long Trail in Vermont.    Our planned hike for this coming weekend is a pleasant romp through a bit of southern Vermont countryside and is not at all challenging, given that we stick to the valleys on this one.    There is also an option on this particular hike to turn back at any time and return to the starting point for those of us not wishing to complete the entire nine miles.    Anyone interested in joining us may email me at freewalkerma@gmail.com.

Thank you John P for getting announcement of our first of the season ANANEC freehike up ahead of me here on this forum on your post a week ago.    I have been swamped with office and home related duties and neglecting my social duties here.   Everyone is welcome to join us on this hike next Saturday.    I'm glad to see John P that you have been enjoying that fine weather in England with the Naturist Ramblers.    I'm sorry that you can't be here with us this year at the same time.   You'll have to work on that being in two places at the same time trick for us.

If some of you all can't make our May 7 hike (and I'm sorry about the short notice), you may prepare to join us for the annual Nude Hiking Day on the Long Trail, also in Vermont, on June 20.    This great celebration of the Summer Solstice has been happening spontaneously for about a decade amongst the various members of our group, dating to before ANANEC was formed and has been a great opportunity for us to meet fellow freehikers.    We hope to see you there.

-Dan

PS.  I just received word from the organizers that the World Naked Bike Ride, Vermont version is to happen once again this year in Montpelier.    Usually in June, the exact date is yet to be set.    I also have fair reason to believe that the wildly successful Boston WNBR will also happen again this year.   I will post here as soon as I have more info on either of these events, as well as more local ANANEC hikes to come.

The weather forecast for Saturday gets a little worse day by day. The chances of rain continue to hover around 50 percent but the forecast high temperature has dropped into the mid-50s. The hike for Saturday May 7 will therefore be postponed.

The original rain date was to be May 14 but the long-range weather forecast for that date is no better than the forecast for May 7.

We will therefore convene -- weather permitting -- on Saturday, May 28, at the same trailhead, to celebrate the unofficial launch of summer. Hope to see you then.

As before, you can request the organizer's email address.
