There is a small town north of Houston called "Cut and Shoot". There are many little places with odd names here.
Sometimes they pick names just to be different.

There was a town near here called "Hell to Pay."    They changed it to "Eltopia."   Same pronunciation though.

I love towns with fun names.

Truth or Consequences I've known all of my life. I didn't know until fairly recently that there are many hot mineral springs there, a major draw and industry for the town. It used to be named Hotsprings, New Mexico. The game show Truth of Consequences advertised a lot of publicity and other goodies to any town that would change its name. They did. They got temporary recognition. That was back in the late 1950's, I think. Now few people realize that the town has all of these great mineral baths. There is no move to change it back. It is an ominous name to me. Go figure....

Maybe they like a sleepy little town that rolls up at sundown to tourists, extra income or not?

The name fit it back in the 1970's when it was a notorious traffic stop targeting drug runners bring pot up from Tucson and other border spots. Maybe they still have a stack of titled stationary, and old checks that need to be used up, or maybe it just cost too much to change everything.
