Posters at Zurich nude beach
« on: April 21, 2017, 11:25:12 PM »
It seems possible that I'll be passing through Zurich, Switzerland this summer, so of course I did a search on nude opportunities. I found a reference that started with the discouraging words:

"New warning posters erected in Zurich’s nude bathing zone"

But this is Europe, not America. It goes on to say, "The posters are to alert people that the area is a designated nudist bathing zone as it became apparent that some people were not aware and were being caught off guard." Aren't you glad you don't live in that crazy place?

Quote from: article
But apparently not everyone is in the know, according to a local councilor who requested that Zurich city council consider “appropriate signage” of the area, authorities said in a statement.

“Although nudity is generally not prohibited in public, it always leads to conflict,” continued the statement.

Nudity leads to conflict on a historically nude island? Methinks someting backwards in Denmark!
By reading to the end of the article you will discover that an inability to read is likely the source of the conflict. ;)

It'll be interesting to see if the signs work. The internationalisation of signage through pictures instead of words has been going on for years, but I'm not convinced that cartoon bare bums convey the presence of nudity unless you already know that nudity takes place in the general area.

It is new. It needs to be a more common symbol...Europe needs more publicly nude areas and MORE signs! Woohoo!

Beaches that require body covers should have a sign.  Everywhere else should be free for people to choose.   No sign, no requirement.

What Bob said. On the other hand, that would be lots of signs at this stage.

Maybe an army of naturists, each possessing a dozen of those signs, liberating one place at a time. Cops would have to check first before arrest, or whatever they do in Switzerland. Hmmm, naturists all over Europe have dozens of these signs to post....

I'm not sure about the graphic that they are using. I would prefer either the blue one below or a blue version of the third, fourth or fifth one indicating permission to be naked rather than forbidding swimwear.
The forbidden sign is more appropriate to naturist swimming pools and ALL saunas.

That's OK.  Make them put up signs if human bodies are not allowed to be seen.  Clothing optional  should be the assumed default option.   Let them post it when not.

How about a photo of real naked people with, "OK", right below it.

Ok, is understood almost worldwide.
No confusion there.

I tend to agree with Duane...or a 'tick' (although this may be misinterpreted as a ban on Nike trainers!! :) )
The very fact of having a public body design a sign for naturism means they have to think about where it might be appropriate.  Who knows, the local government propensity for erecting signs might actually create a few nudist areas!

However, the addition of a red strip in a red circle on the self same sign might have the reverse effect!

A couple of those generic signs seem to suggest that bathing suits are banned which a person in a tuxedo would be complying with on that beach! ;D
