Nude Across America Pt.13: Wandering Quartet
« on: November 30, 2021, 09:54:57 PM »
After World Naked Hiking Day, John P. and Dan (Freewalkermass here) guide us through to some of their favorite a spots in Vermont. A huge lake's trail, the ledges, and we do a bit of wandering around the campground where we have been staying. At the end of the day, John generously leaves us a detailed map/trail book which changes everything, before they drive off into the rainy New England weather and their homes.

This Vermont Country reminds me so much of Yorkshire UK where I lived as a child.  This was a favourite place called 'The Strid' that we used to visit occasionally and bears huge resemblance to one of the locations in your last blog post, Jbee.  I have visited it once or twice in adulthood too!  If you google the name and look at other pictures the difference from your trip becomes obvious.  The UK spot is popular with day trippers and walkers and so the opportunity to wander freely naked (apart from the weather contingencies, of course), is zero.  I have oft waxed frustration about our crowded little island.  This is an example!

I thought that it is legal to hike nude over there!?! A bit of paper alerts the ignorant authorities to the facts. How often would you encounter other hikers at that local?

It is legal to hike naked in the UK but the spot I referred to is a major tourist location.  I dare say on a wet Wednesday in January there might be relatively few visitors but in naked hiking weather in the spring and summer it is a popular hiking and picnic spot not only for 'proper' hikers but also day trippers out for a day out and an ice cream in the countryside from the nearby conurbations. The river and a nearby ruined abbey attracts lots of visitors.
This photo and This photo give you a better impression of the area on a suitable day for nude hiking and why you don't come a cross naked hikers around there! :)

Now whilst one or two naked hikers amongst many textile visitors might not be contravening the law, in such a busy spot it would, I am sure, be bound to get complaints and probably adverse comment to both the people that manage the area and on social media.  Social media present almost as large a threat as that of the law and in these legally enlightened times, perhaps more so. I for one would not like to be ridiculed in public across the world, even if my naked exploits might be legal and tolerated by the assembled masses.
Being highlighted and commented on by some ignorant so-and-so on their tik tok, facebook or instagram feed is a completely different matter from your blog, Jbee or the Naked Munro's FRN site where the content and comment are controlled and presented properly by the site owner.  No such control where a third party decides what spin they will put on your innocent hike and where that might easily be evil and uncalled for negative invective.

The difference, John, between what's legal and what's socially acceptable. Queue jumping isn't illegal - but just try it!

Good point.

Conurbations!?! Now I know a new word, but can't use it because nobody else but you understands it..... :D

Don't be such an inverted snob Jbee!  It is not a virtue to lack knowledge.  You underestimate those you know - try it on them, you may be surprised how many do know the word.  It is a fairly common expression in UK English.
But I'll admit that floccinaucinihilipilification, one of the longest words in English, meaning the usually erroneous underestimation of something as valueless, is a word few encounter in their lifetimes.  I use it vanishingly rarely :D

Whadda Flocc?!?!

Looked the gibberish up in Websters, but it wasn’t there! Other online dictionaries, however, did have mention. I studied it and having difficulty even pronouncing it, gave up. I was out of breath at that point, anyway.

Epistemophilia is a fault. So, in this probable antepenultimate, it might be said that such knowledge is an agathokakological piece of entertainment, which is okay with me.

That being said, I must disclose that I plucked this response out of a Webster’s list of long words that I came across while searching out floccinaucinihilipilification. I am not the talented wordsmith that we know Nuduke to be and would be a fool to duel, or compete in such territory. If my life depended on completing a crossword puzzle, I would choose Nuduke to be at my side.

In my life, I have found that many figure, or have the habit of hiding lack of vocabulary, by gathering the idea expressed, or definition by what is around the obscure, or the forgotten words, rather than admit ignorance, or choose to take the redirection of conversation off topic.

I am pretty good at writing really long sentences…Can't speak long. Tend to forget what I was saying before they end.

Bit of floccinaucinihilipilification there, Jbee.  Not me. I don't use a lengthy or less widely promulgated word unless a) I know what it means and b) it's appropriate in the contextual concomitancy of the redaction in hand, c) I can spell it and d) It makes me seem superior!  (just joking on the last point.....mostly :D ).

Oh, why do people use all them big words, when a more diminutive expression would suffice? ;D

To quote a frequent grinning lament of a former girlfriend.
