For these self-portraits in the field I use a compact camera, but one that allows me to take pictures in raw format so I can work on the computer later. It also has the possibility to take pictures in interval mode, i.e. I can program the number of pictures and the duration between each picture. For example, I often use an interval of three or four seconds which gives me a good twenty photos and I only have to choose the best one or two afterwards.
I always use a mini tripod that is flexible enough that I can bend its feet and put it on a rock, a fence, and even on my walking stick planted in the ground or even hang it on a tree branch.
