Naked Tourists vexes government

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/20/travel/naked-tourists-machu-picchu-peru/index.html

CNN) -- Watch out for bare butts when traveling in Machu Picchu -- incidents of "naked tourism" at the 15th-century Inca citadel are on the rise, and getting under the skin of Peru officials.

According to the Peruvian Times, four American tourists were detained on March 14 for getting naked and posing for photos at the site.

In a pair of separate incidents earlier in the week, two Canadians and two Australians were detained for stripping down for pictures at Machu Picchu.

The bare-it-all episodes followed a 2013 incident in which a naked couple was videotaped by other tourists while streaking across Machu Picchu's grass field and bounding down a stone staircase like a pair of adolescent antelopes.

The website My Naked Trip features images of an Israeli man named Amichay Rab posing in the buff at sites around South America, including Machu Picchu.

Rab's long, curly hair and bold poses have won him a cluster of followers.

The photos and video have made the rounds on social media.

Peruvian officials are not amused.

Crackdown

Peru's Ministry of Culture has denounced the spectacle of nude visitors at Machu Picchu as "disrespectful" and "unfortunate events that threaten cultural heritage."

"There are places in the world that people can get naked, but not all places are (appropriate) for getting undressed," Alfredo Mormontoy Atayupanqui, director of archaeological resources for Peru's Ministry of Culture, tells CNN.

According to Mormontoy, park rules printed on the back of admission tickets warn visitors against being nude in public.

"Tourists should comply with local rules and regulations when they are traveling, otherwise there will be thousands of problems," he says.

Meanwhile, Cusco's regional director of culture, Ricardo Ruiz Caro, has issued a statement saying that park guards at Machu Picchu and other historic sites in the region will increase surveillance and crackdown on naked tourism.

New rules announced but yet to be put in place are also meant to address the issue of overcrowding at the site.

According to the Peruvian Times, "All foreign visitors to Machu Picchu will soon have to hire an official guide to enter the Inca Citadel, follow one of three predetermined routes through the complex and face time limits at specific points to keep the traffic flowing, under new rules promulgated by the Ministry of Culture in Cusco."

"Machu Picchu is visited by tourists of different ages, religions and ideologies," says Mormontoy. "Nude behavior may bring pleasure to a small percentage of people, but it causes discomfort and anger to others. We need to make sure other tourists don't feel awkward."

Sounds like the place is getting too crowded. I blew it off in the seventies when I found out that people were selling caca cola on the Inca trail that leads to it.

I found another Inca trail in Bolivia that only a dozen tourist or less had traveled before me. Seventy miles down hill from 12000 ft.. I had checked in with the Museum of Antiquites in La Paz, before, but they said that they hadn't heard of it. As we searched the middle of nowhere and it got colder and closer to dark for the entrance, I had my doubts.

Most of it on a stone road. The road totally degraded once getting into the jungle with landslides etc. Mummy bones were seen in broken stone boxes along the trail. The rope bridges were falling apart and hair raising. We didn't get naked for any enjoyment. We were focused on getting out and surviving. Thank Tiahuanaco for coca and marching powder. It saved us. When we (two Englishmen and me) would walk through the little hamlets people would come out to watch like a parade. We were told that most had never laid eyes on a gringo. They would offer to put us up. We stayed in a church/school one night. I have seen it advertised for hiking tours since. It was the old Corroico-La Paz royal route. No one would be truly offended by nudity. They would probably just laugh at the silly alien beings.

So, this is what reverence the Peruvian government has truly given Machu Pichu. They created a commercial tourist cash-cow and wish to not offend other tourist to preserve the income. That is disrespect and in Spanish.

The question was where do I stand on naked tourism? I stand as naked and as often as I can when touring. I go places just to maintain and enhance my lifestyle. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Sort of like a flash mob, only with outdoor nudity?

Why are they all pointing up, and why are the majority pointing to the right and only a couple pointing to the left?

Are they members of a group, or is this some naturist/naked sign that has meaning.
The peace sign had meaning, does this?

It does look like a fun way to go sightseeing.  I wonder if these were just quick episodes of nudity at a sight or were they wandering around naked full time.

We regroup!

Our goal is the same: we must liberate the buttock.
We need agents trained hyper, hyper motivated.
Agents who are fearless and ready for anything.
Mobile agents, who will travel the globe in search of the battered buttock locked, recluse, respected and will not release it.
The dangers are many. The authorities of most countries of our planet trying to keep the buttock locked.
Places will sometimes perilous, the capricious weather, hostile environment and yet you will be there all I know, as we prepared to release the buttock.

Our network must remain secret, must grow and must put at the service of Buttock a surefire elite corps!

Are likely to join us but we prove your commitment when you join the network!

Good work most of them.  I also wonder why the pointing right (or left).  And pants around ankles is so not happening.

I saw a TV news story a couple days ago (sorry, no link) about some tourists in a SE Asia country who were arrested and accused of CAUSING AN EARTHQUAKE BY BEING NAKED on top of some "sacred" mountain.  They were arrested and are waiting trial for causing an earthquake.  Anyone else seen that story and have a link?

I know my buns are bigger than some, but I don't recall ever causing an earthquake by exposing myself on a mountain top, sacred or otherwise.  I have caused an occasional rock to roll down.

Just as well Scotland isn't seismically active otherwise we'd have destroyed the country years ago.

One of the many reports of this event can be found here.

I saw another article where the tourists admitted to the act but I don't know if they admitted to causing the earthquake.  If they did cause it I'm not sure I would mess with them.

The have been a number of incidents in South East Asia, Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country so they get a little uptight, but there have been other reports at ancient temples in Cambodia and Thailand.
Unfortunately these people are doing it for the kicks, just for the photograph, and quite the opposite of secret naturism, without a hint of discretion.

On this site we've seen reports from Malaysia and Peru that DO NOT like nudists running about. Although it appears that both reports were from major tourist attractions. It could be that they are simply managing their tourist revenue bottom line. Malaysia probably has a Muslim population but I don't think Peru does. They have (or had) Shining Path, a communist faction that lives in the jungles of the mountains, and they frown on all things western.

I was in Cancun, Mexico years ago and one night when we were strolling down the beach at night, we had two white uniformed Federales discreetly monitoring our behavior. We were at the Club Med resort there and I heard that the presence of these monitors was part of the deal in allowing them to build the resort. I thought that odd at the time. The government monitoring moral behavior.

Don't know if that situation has changed. That was in 1983.

The monitors are paid for by the hotel, then part of their pay is an ongoing kickback up the ladder until it gets to the person who made the arrangement. So, it is profitable to require monitors.

It is also profitable to monitor marijuana use and skinnydipping among tourist who feel safe on the dark beach. It also protects the tourists. There are parts of Mexico that have a reputation as unsafe and any local gov doesn't want that.

Things weren't bad then as they are now. Maybe.

It had the desired effect, we didn't stay on the beach very long. They were discreet. They stayed about 30-40 yds. away, but they didn't leave.

Story cut short.

Thinking back on that trip, there were several folks from France that showed up mid week.

When snorkeling or just swimming the young ladies would go topless. As long as they stayed out in the reef, there was no action taken.

I suppose they asked and were told to not come ashore that way.
