Summer hikes
« on: June 17, 2016, 11:05:44 PM »
I went out on a morning hike a few days ago. With the temps trending up I wanted to leave early to get in a nice walk before the heat settles in.

I got to the site at about 6:30am. It was around 75-80 deg., very nice. I knew I wasn’t going to be there very long so I didn’t have an ambitious hike in mind. Just an early morning walk, taking my time and enjoying the walk and the cool morning.

  • There’s a large red sandstone formation just north of where the track ends. Click on .kmz file below to see the Google image and track. About halfway up beside rocks right there on the track is where this photo was taken. The spot where I set up the camera was in shade and very tempting to hang around.
  • The 2nd one is taken at the end of the track. This bluff is about 90 ft. above the bottom of the valley. I sat down and was able to spend some time relaxing and enjoying the morning. Birds kept flying past, looping up and rolling in the updrafts from the morning sun on the rocks.

I started back to the road about 9:30. By the time I got back to the car the temp was pushing 90. Good timing. I slipped my shorts back on to walk back to the car. From the point where I am fully visible to traffic to where I parked is about 400 yds. After getting in the car I drove the 26 miles back to the main highway naked.

On Monday, WNHD, the forecast is HOTTER, so I may try to get out there before sunrise and while there is still a full moon. With so little vegetation the moonlight reflects off all the rock formations, mountains and desert floor. It looks amazing!

At that time of the morning it should still be nice and cool. Hopefully I can get my wife to join me as long as we don’t stay out to late in the morning.
