The storm has wreaked havoc on all of East Texas from Corpus Christi to Victoria, through Galveston and Port Arthur, then into Louisiana. I had 34 inches of rain here. The creek crested right at my door step. The current pushed water into 2 rooms on the west side, soaking a carpet in my son's room that should have been discarded years ago. We were blessed.
Monday I walked the horses to higher pasture through 3 ft. of water. Trying desperately to keep my damaged feet out of the path of 12 dancing hooves in the murky brown waters. The gauge on the creek was beyond capacity, so we had no way of knowing the rate of flooding, so I packed up the rest of the critters and headed for brother's.
The creek crested at the same level when we left, so no interior damage. My neighbors were not so lucky. Even the ones that pushed for my prosecution were friendly.
Anyway, the horses are home and besides a huge mess in the garage, life is returning to normal. Sitting comfortably on the back porch, feeling the first mosquitoes swarming near, & catching up on some of the non-storm chatter.

Ouch, bad bad stuff. But it's all over the news, and of course some people are dead, and others are pretty much left destitute. If you've come through it "not too bad, considering" then you've done well.

Hey guys,
Has anyone heard from Tanman or Kyaker since Harvey? I know it was devastating a big area of Texas and Louisiana and now Irma is going up the west coast of Florida! I have relatives and friends at both places. There was a family who moved to our parish because of Katrina. They flooded here last August and just moved to Houston a week before Harvey and are flooded the 3rd time. We had 30 inches in our house last year too. I am just now starting to replace the gyp board.

Maybe next year I'll have more time to post with you all again. I have missed you!

I figure, if the Houston brethren are in trouble, they are too busy for us at the moment. If things are fine, things are fine. I let out a heartfelt prayer. A lady that I've been hanging out with a lot lately, has 6 grandchildren and a ton of friends in Houston. Most everyone is fine, but for property, and precious possession loss. Odds are pretty good for Tanman and Lisa.

I have certainly been thinking of you Hymie and I'm relieved to hear from you. I do pray that they are well, and that they may have a touching kayak story to tell us "soon." Miss you, too.

DF's daughter lives on the north coast of Puerto Rico, but reports that they are okay. Now, DF is in Georgia for her mom's 95th birthday. Hurricane Irma is heading directly her way. It will be a messy storm when it gets that far north, but there is a big chance of multiple tornadoes in that area and associated dangers. I remind myself that the odds are favorable.

It is good to live in Tucson, where the catastrophic weather phenomena only makes you want to get naked.

As for Larry and Lisa I don’t know what area they are in. Just near Houston. As you move north out of the city it get more hilly, so they may be just fine.

I have a friend that was in Austin, TX, which was in the sights of Harvey before it started it’s whirlygig off the coast. I sent a message to check on them and discovered that he had retired and headed to Livingston, TX with his newly purchased travel trailer. Livingston is about 70 miles northeast of Houston. Bad choice but last I heard they were doing fine. I have friends in Spring and family in Pasadena and near Baytown all doing fine considering. Dodged a big one.

I have cousins in Mississippi and Georgia though, and they are now in the path of Irma. Hopefully the storm will be weakened by then.

If I understood the numbers right from the news reports over here, Houston has about 2.5m people and about 400,000 needed help. That suggests most, around 80 per cent, came through relatively OK. Unfortunately the news feeds only focus on the dramatic rather than the full picture, which can be confusing for the rest of us.

The news from Florida is just as puzzling - a third of the popoulation evacuated, but where to? They get moved north up state, but Irma is just going to follow them.

It's not 'fake news' but it's only half the story. The screen gets us alarmed and worried, but doesn't tell us when it's all right.

For a week all the media has been devoting a large percentage of "news" to shouting that Irma would be the "worst hurricane ever."   By last Friday I had concluded that FAKE NEWS made up most of it.  The louder they shout correlates to the less important a story really is.  Irma got so much hype that we knew it wouldn't be much of a storm. 

Yesterday all day on several US TV networks they had continuous coverage of reporters standing out in the rain with cameras showing very little damage to all the buildings around their reporters.  Yes, it got windy. Yes it rained. But the storm moved rapidly past without doing much damage.  Some minor flooding over by Miami.  Some trees down.  Some electricity shut off.  Some inconvenience but not a huge serious damaging storm. 

Most of the inconvenience happened because of the FAKE NEWS hype.  Today's news is mostly about (black -- not PC to say that) looters in the evacuated areas. 

Hurricanes in Florida are pretty much a way of life.  The University of Miami calls their football team "The Hurricanes."  As hurricanes go, Irma was pretty minor.   I get so tired of the MSM fake news people shouting fear and doom at us all the time.

The population of the city of Houston is about 2.4 m. The metropolitan area is about 6.8 m. which drops that ratio down to about 6%. Still that’s a lot of people.

The Houston metro area is 8260 sq.mi. (21,395 sq.km). That's larger than 3 individual states and almost as large as New Jersey. The city of Houston is 667 sq.mi (1,625.2 sq.km). Houston is in Harris county, 1,777 sq.mi (4,602 sq.km). It’s a big place with 3 freeway loops around it. It is spread out with bayous, creeks, rivers, lakes and ponds everywhere making direct access a headache unless you have an airboat.

Florida is similar. A low lying coastal area with huge retirement communities everywhere. Getting out of either area isn’t an issue in normal times. Evacuations, days in advance, help but getting almost 7 million people to move is not easy. Florida is unique as it’s a peninsula and there’s only one way out. North.

I spoke to a friend that has relatives in Paris, Tx. near the Oklahoma border, and she said that all rooms were booked up solid. That’s 300 miles north in a small town of about 25,000. You can imagine how crowded it gets the closer you get to Houston. A similar situation is in Florida.

If you live near a coast prone to hurricanes, you have to be ready to deal with this. Those you see on the news that are trapped were not prepared. Some for legitimate reasons, some just don’t want to deal with it, for whatever reason. It is puzzling behavior, but they have to be helped in whatever way possible.

I've watched the reporting also and usually after I get caught up, I turn it off as it is repetitive.

Fox news is a propaganda machine, very racist and hasn't told the truth "ANY" time that I have watched it in the last 15 years. If it covered Irma downplaying it, then maybe it is because of that. The other news media are not much better, owned by guess which corporations and individuals, but FOX is sickeningly obviously an agenda, lying more often than not. Sure, the weather has been sensationalized for over 100 years, "it sells papers"was the old school line, that still applies. DF is sitting in Atlanta as I write this and the tropical storm is hitting at 50 to 70 mph winds and the usual result is multiple tornadoes where she is. Ten years ago tornadoes there were unheard of there. That's a significant change in climate. The change is everywhere, it isn't a norm, it is caused by human beings. The real fake news is not reporting what an inept dangerous oligarchic fascistic crackpot the president is, who subverts the truth and any attempts for science to find evidence of the truth, to make stock holders and himself profit. DF and her family are huddled below ground to be safe and I have my legitimate concerns for them. Yea, the odds are that an uprooted tree from tornadoes won't cave in the roof of her sister's house, AGAIN! I don't want to hear anymore of that political crap, that that pig spouts about "fake news" directed at anyone who tells it like it is and offends his sick ego. Not here.

So good to hear from you albeit with news of your difficulties with flooding.
Every good wish for a good and easy resolution, buddy.
Obviously the forum must be a very very low priority for you at such a time but promise us you'll drop in from time to time when things get a bit better.  Several of us have remarked in other threads how we have missed you and some of the old time regulars that no longer seem to participate.  Very good to know that at least you are having an occasional lurk to read the odd post.


On the subject of Irma, my brother is a frequent visitor to the Florida Keys and has quite a few friends there.  His timeshare property is devastated and some of his friends have returned to no home at all.  Others remain in 'exile' in e.g Ft Lauderdale awaiting some sort of opportunity to return and rebuild.  How will the population of the worst hit areas recover.  I know they will but where do you start?  .....With a lot of dumpsters I guess!

SUMMER IS OVER   in these parts.

We had a record 80 days without rain.  Its been sunny and highs in the 90s (35C) since June.  But that came to a sudden end. 

The northern jet stream slid south from its summer track in Canada.  Cold gulf of Alaska systems are tracking through the NW of the US.  Its been raining all week, cloudy, windy, and with high temps in the 50s (13C).  Higher elevations have been getting SNOW!!! Yikes. 

Not that the land didn't need rain.  Wildfires and smoke have sometimes obscured the sun since August.  Our trees and bushes will love the water.   Rain and snow are dampening down the wildfires.   Our air is again clear when not cloudy. 

It feels too cold for me to be comfortable naked outside.  I can do naked in the 50s F and sunshine, but not 50s and wind.  At night and in the morning its down into 40s.  (less than 10C)  We will still get a few afternoons next week, but long naked summer days are pretty much over for this year.

I really need to move father south.

we seem to have had a damp summer ... certainly august and september have been showery , finally today managed to get all the balls in the air and spent the day at a clients mowing and hedgetrimming in the buff . started bright and sunny this morning with the odd cloud . afternoon turned more cloudy , totally overcast by about 3 but still pleasantly warm . just starting to spit with rain as i packed away at 4 oclock.
