Snow Angel
« on: February 28, 2018, 11:11:49 PM »
Guys, it was snowy early this morning and I had a little adventure.
We are having a pretty bad spell of snow in the UK and our area was not spared the frozen white inconvenience. As luck would have it the thing I was due to attend this morning was cancelled by 8.30 ish so I had a free day. "Right!" said I to wifey "you don't get many chances for a snow angel! Life's too short - I'm off to play in the snow!" So I fiddled around with my cellphone, propping it up in an upstairs window so I got an aerial view, started the video, went downstairs into the garden and made a lovely snow angel naked (that's me not the angel) in about -5deg c (23 deg F). Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to post the video without giving the world access to my photo store so here are some video frames. First the long view. The blue circle was a tuft of grass where I was to aim for to get in the centre of the video but I misjudged tufts and ended up at the edge of the picture

Next the angel moment - I clipped a frame from the video and zoomed it in at its climax whilst I was angel-ing!  Sorry only half of me in frame (quite enough some might say!).

I was overjoyed to have done this - it has been a smaller item on life's bucket list. I have to say that I've played naked in the snow before but there wasn't enough for an angel so this time on the soft grass it was ideal.

It was cold! I didn't feel shivery at all but the pain of the snow on my skin glowed for some time after I got inside again. Having made my contribution to snow art, I went upstairs clad in dressing gown (US=bathrobe) and announced I had achieved my little ambition. "Did you do it naked!" said Mrs N with obviously the shock of realisation that had not occurred to her before. "Of course" I smiled. "Let me have a look then", she said rising from bed and heading for the appropriate bedroom window. Thinking quickly I said "I'll show you" and dashed downstairs and out into the garden naked and pointed it out with a little dance in the snow. I could hear her objecting through closed double glazed windows! So I made a snowball and threw it at the window. She smiled and saw the fun of it really.

Then she decided to make a snowman. She dressed in several layers, hat, boots etc etc and tramped into the garden and started rolling snow. "Coming to help!" I shouted and once again leapt into the garden naked. She was not amused and asked me to go in after only a minute or so.  "I'm not cold" I said (lying!). "I don't care, she said - I hate you being naked like that."

So I went in, put on overalls and boots and a coat and we had a few laughs at our very unsuccessful snowman building effort as the snow was unusually powdery and not adherent at all.  Eventually she got a dwarf snowman constructed and after the obligatory photos we went in for breakfast before which I had a brief but hot shower to warm up.

Not as involved as JBee and DF's exploits but we had a little fun nevertheless and I got a bit more outdoor naked fun than I expected!

I'd rather roll in the snow after a sauna than stand under a freezing cold shower. We are lucky here in Brum with little snow but I'll not be rolling round in what we've got after Carol on the BBC has said with wind chill it will be minus 13 here.

Brrrrrrr

If the wind drops and we get a dump of snow then sauna plus snow seems a probability which I did manage earlier this winter.

Is it really cold outside as it us the first metrological day of spring!  ..and St David's Day

Well! St David has brought us a foot of snow in darkest Lincs. Everything cancelled. Nervous phone calls coming in about what to do about tomorrow's events. Takes 45 min to get the car out etc. Almost all trAins cancelled....

Snow is beautiful and fun for an hour.  When you consider what tedious inconvenience it causes, danger to the vulnerable, cost in damage, lost trade and inability to move around freely, it's a curse.
Harumph! Thank goodness my schedule is quiet these last few days. But I have to get a train to London Sunday to meet someone who is arriving from afar via Heathrow (Uk's main airport).  What are the chances of that being a fool's errand!  High!!

I agree with John about snow.  Its pretty to look at for about an hour.

One of these years I'm moving to Arizona where JBee lives.

Anyone remember when the UK Met office told everyone that snow shovels would be a thing of the past in 10 years because of "Global warming"?   It just isn't going to snow any more in the UK, they said.  Maybe the Met Office should come out and shovel off everyone's streets.

They also told us a few years ago that we would have a BBQ summer. It was the worst for many years.

Its getting worse here, the lawn is disappearing making my garden as good as my neighbours. Still too cold to do a snow angel and the wid is blowing a very fine snow all over the place. It ain't nice.

I read that the concern was that the shifts would possibly throw Europe into an ice-age. Speculation that the Atlantic stream could stop. Never read a general increase in temperature there. The only definite to be predicted is the undefined, that is being that extremes and records would be more prevalent. The analogy of the plate spinning on the stick at the circus. It will just wobble more and more dramatically as the global average continues to climb. Parts will warm quicker, like the arctic, which then effects the interaction with the rest of the planet, which has been the case. We have had just a few years of "normal" here in Tucson, since 1989. Record droughts, record smashing highs and lows, extended monsoons lasting several months longer and every so often things get to "I remember back when" condition.

I have personally noticed that when we are having pleasant sunny weather, you all up north and east have been reporting suffering records of crap and visa versa. That has been pretty consistent all the time...until this month. :o ;D

So, Tucson has had an extreme drought since is time last year. The monsoon came in late and broke a record in only three weeks and stopped. It hadn't rained since except a pretty good rain in December. There has always been one good winter rain in December and one in January. Didn't get one in January this year. So, this has meant lots of blue skies and warm pleasant weather for a year, not much over 100F. I was concerned because the desert is drying up dramatically and February usually is beginning springtime and a period of less rain, but so far, it has been like the winter weather that we misssed. We just got a wonderful couple of winter rains.

I went to work yesterday in sleet. I had difficulty defining that it was sleet, because I haven't seen sleet in decades. It was like soft hail, little tiny snowballs. "What is this?," I pondered. Then a few minutes down the road it hit me, a word that had fallen into disuse over the years, "Is this sleet." I had to think back jogging distant memories and associations. A friend that has been up north more recently confirmed it.

There is snow on the mountains soaking into the ground and the springs will probably be running when it gets hot and I want to hang around up there in May, instead of the fear of the place burning down. Now, if that holds out and we can get it all to coincide with DF's work schedule, we will have some great trip reports. ::)

Global averages are creeping up, which causes chaos, records, extremes and  unpredictability. I've been thinking that Europe is due for some extremes of wonderful naturist weather for years, but it hasn't done that....You all complain about rain, cold, more rain and now snow. I don't remember much great weather when I lived in Paris. I remember 300 days of cold drizzle each year and being told that was what to expect, buy a fur lined raincoat.

I doesn't matter what the weather is doing, we in this soggy but green island are only happy when we are moaning about the weather.
Half inch of snow - schools close ,
Inch of snow - worlds coming to an end
Summer anything over 25 deg C and its headline news
over 30 deg and the phone lines to The Guinness Book of Records are red hot.

We don't have climate we have weather!

The main problem is we get small amounts of really bad weather - insufficient to justify huge expenditure to properly tackle it, then we moan.

A day out for many Brits is to walk up a mountain in rain and mist, munch soggy sandwiches, come down and say what a great day out we've had (as observed in a Bill Bryson book) There's a theory that the British Empire was founded for no other reason than to get away from the dismal weather.

One thing for sure, as soon as the sun peeps out in the next few days some naturist will be telling of walks in the buff, snow angels and swims in the sea. .. and we consider ourselves quite normal!

Paris got 6 inches when I lived there. The whole city and suburbs shut down for seven straight days.

Here we just don't have a clue whatsoever to do about snow. Fortunately it is all gone by noon. Uh...other than the ski runs on top of some of the mountains. Most people don't know how to drive in snow. It is dangerous o be on the road with them. These roads would be shredded if they put chains on.

we have the same problem in the south of the uk.   we see so little snow that most drivers dont have a clue how to deal with it.   pratts like clarkson on top gear havnt helped, theyve brainwashed a generation into beleiving speed and tyre spinning is a clever way to drive.
foot plonked on throttle or brake no idea of sublety.

i was taught to mentally throw the brake pedal out the window and stic k a raw egg on the throttle pedal.

weve got about six inches this morning,  could be 2 or 3 years before we see any more,  this much is maybe a 1 in 15 year event.

My paternal grandmother was one of the most accurate weather forecasters ever. In periods of silence in the conversation she was prone to say, "Well, it looks like we're going to have some weather".

Never once was she wrong!

[font=]Be careful what you wish for - Sod may well apply his law to frustrate those who underestimate the randomness of weather!!![/font]

[font=]And Davie, I think you brilliantly summed up the British attitude to weather![/font]
[font=]I sort of envy those climates like AZ where the local variation follows a very reliable, repeatable pattern unlike our never settling climate.[/font]

Note the curious appearance of bracketed code on my posts.  This keeps happening and uncontrollable font changes.  Last few weeks I have spent ages cleaning up messages to take out all those random bb code appearances.  What the H*** causes it?
