1st day of Spring
« on: March 20, 2018, 10:00:54 PM »
Well, today is the Vernal Equinox. I need to get up and get out.

We've been working on yard projects all winter and I have had enough of the manual labor for a while.

Supposed to rain tomorrow. Timing is all.

Some first day of spring with 5 inches of snow! Things don't look good in the near future either.

Have you been hit with those nor'easters?

Every few days another one comes along. It's like something or someone is trying to get your attention.

Brrrr!

Not the nor'easters themselves but glancing blows from the systems that turn into them. Or feed into their formation. We've gotten snow or rain but not been hammered yet.

I caught something the other day about this weather being like winter is heading out the door, but keeps stomping back in yelling, "And one more thing!" ;D

But this is the season when I no longer feel the teeth in it, even our 10 inch snowfall right about on the equinox. Today, the sun was SO warm, and the snow is mostly gone. Still sub-freezing nights, but the days keep warming more and more, calling me to the trails...

We were planning an outdoor party and evening bonfire on Saturday to celebrate the equinox, but the weather has turned rainy and cold again, and snow predicted for Saturday morning.   Another cold, late, spring.

We've had a pretty bad spring so far in the UK with much snow and, after a brief respite this weekend, more to come at the end of next week.

The worst thing about this year’s bad weather is the media’s insistence on naming it! First the Beast from the East, then the Pest from the West, then Beast from the East II. The next one expected has been dubbed the Nightmare from the North.

When I were a lad we called it Winter.

I actually got out and about on the first day of spring. I have a couple of local walks across the fields. This time I explored a short section between the two. It was a cloudy day with the sun breaking through at times. There were still odd patches of snow about and at times a cool breeze but I did walk naked and it was wonderful.  Clothes off equals instant freedom.

I did another walk in the same general area a couple of weeks ago but this time there were (as there should be) signs of spring and better days.

Here we are on a lovely Saturday morning, first Saturday after Equinox, and we have inches of new snow.  Snowing and blowing heavy wet flakes.

When I lived in Michigan, a teenager, in early April, we would be standing on snow, waiting for a bus, the temperatures freezing as we did our dance to stay warm. The snow made the bus late.

The radio would start a "Think Summer" campaign. We'd be desperate enough to try to adjust the cold with communal thought, but we'd only adjust our frustration, float off to fantasy, forget the current awareness, or melt into some kind of prayer...indoors.

Age makes time go quicker and so it goes, but then they retire in Florida, or some western sunbelt station and the gift is not used.

We are now getting unseasonable highs here. The second and third weekends of April are planned for tripping about naked in the tooleys, trip reports and enjoying blessings. May you soon be pleasantly standing naked and soaking up your own blessings.

Over the years I managed to adapt to the colder weather enough that I could stand a half hour or so of wandering around naked in the snow. Be it my age or the fact that some winters have been spent in warmer climates I haven't done it for a few years. I've been able to acclimate to it being colder in the house and remain comfortably naked, although the wife is dressed in flannels!

This year, despite all well made plans, has been a disaster due to health issues. On my few forays into the wild the wind has been the biggest adversary. Even in today's sun with the temperature hovering around 40F (5C) the wind makes it feel much colder besides the occasional burst of snow drifting about. When it hits the skin besides chilling it also stings.

My wife points out that as she visions it soon it will become 80F and humid. Good weather for nudists but poor for anyone with her health issues. April will soon be here with the hope of change.

I agree!  These modern storm names and weather epithets are irritating.  Stop wasting our time with dumbed down labels, meteorologists, and just do the weather forecast!  Tends to over-emphasise the severity of the weather.  Very occasionally an anthropomorphic soubriquet may be appropriate in extreme conditions but the media seem to have latched on to it just lately.  Beast, rhyming with east, seems to have been overdone but then, I wonder what would rhyme with North...or south or west for that matter.  "Here is the weather forecast:  Tomorrow will see high speed winds moving in off the Irish sea so look take precautions against the Vest from the West".  That doesn't have the same sort of ring about it, does it?
The rhyming dictionary gives only the following to rhyme with north; borth, forth, forth, fourth, korth, mawrth, njorth, orth, porth, swarth, warth, warthe - not much scope there for weather system names, happily

Sometimes I think that they just make it up, or somebody up the ladder makes it up on a given day and they repeat it like it is a common term from way back.

The day we poured the first slab on my house there was something called a Siberian Express whipping through. I haven't heard the term since, not that it gets that cold and windy that often, but I have heard other colorful explanations.

I have come to the conclusion that a lot of the weather warnings in the UK are the result of the spread of the blame culture. They over-warn us so that they can't be blamed if it turns out to be worse than they predicted.
