Yeah. Nobody notices the homeless people sleeping on the streets.

It would be nice if these bike rides had that effect, of encouraging people to think of nudity as harmless fun, not a matter for police action. In fact, Pennsylvania has a bad reputation among naturists, but somehow the authorities there did let the World Naked Bike Ride happen without problems.

Anyone who's interested in politics could be asking themselves which kind of government, or which political party, is most likely to try to prohibit nudity, and which is more likely to allow it. Look at this story:

https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/life/2018/07/06/naked-vermont-burlington-police-explain-when-nudity-crosses-line/762719002/

Now try and claim that it's a coincidence that Bernie Sanders is from the state where this can happen. (Actually he's originally from New York. But he saw something in Vermont that made him want to live there.)

From that article, JohnP, it looks like Vermont is doing both.
They seem to say that nudity is harmless and ok, except for when it isn’t. Why is it legal to stroll along naked on the sidewalk adjacent to a park but illegal the second you set foot in the park?

The less I sit and think about Bernie the better. You can do that and then report back. :D

Doubtless some sort of council compromise at the time the rules were made. If one could find the relevant meeting records there was probably some convoluted discussion whereby the fors and againsts gradually worked towards each other. It would have made sense at the time, but in the cold light of later days looks decidedly odd. That’s people for yer!

I expect the city of Burlington has a bylaw that makes nudity in city parks illegal, even though it's legal under state law. That would be similar to the rules that govern state parks in California--nudity is legal in the state (but not in many individual cities there) but the park system has rules against it. Of course there used to be the "Cahill policy" that actually tolerated nudity in the parks, but that's been abolished now. I believe naturists failed to do anything effective to save it (not that success would have been guaranteed) but that's a more complex story.

If anyone's choking on the idea of conflict between political outlook versus tolerance of nudity, I'm sorry. No problems here.

Without seeing all the details It's difficult to know but it looks to me as though the nudity regulations were made by different sub-committees and ratified "on the nod" by the main council.

Anyone here ever participated in the Naked Bike Ride or similar event, like the Spencer Tunick photo shoots? Or are they too public or too organized (or too far away)?

Could be something old and forgotten addressing an incident in the park. A time or situation less tolerant, or a council just looking to pass an ordinance that would be the least intrusive, safe to pass politically, or just taking care of a small problem but affecting fewer voters.

Anyway, not likely to have been passed at the same time and same council.

There was another Vermont community that did pass an ordinance, I believe, because the local teenagers were hanging out and about naked on the sidewalks. Anyone remember?

I wouldn't expect Bernie to be campaigning at a naturist's gathering. I would doubt that he would be concerned with public nudity. He'd probably have to hold back a laugh, if someone brought it up instead of the truly dangerous issues that he is concerned with. Wasn't he mayor of Burlington or another town along the way?

Too far away at places with too iffy weather to plan in advance to be there. If I were up in the area of Washington on vacation at the time, I'd look into renting a bike. All of those movies and pictures of bike rides have one thing apparent, lots of huge grins on the faces. Yea, I'd like to do it...yea, I looked at the faces, too. ::)

Bare to Breakers is often near my birthday. It is on the bucket list. Gotta have a place to stay, or get ripped off for the weekend. I have a friend moving up there, I used to have many up there, used to live up there. I wonder if my favorite sushi bar is still open? Yea, maybe. Used to fly up there for the weekend, every so often.

I'm sure its the old stupid nonsense about "protect the children" from seeing nude people.  Parks have children so nudes should not go to parks.  Irrational on all accounts, but that's probably the reason for the local ordinance about no nudes in parks.

I have participated in 3 WNBRs. 1 in Austin (2012) and 2 this year, here in Houston. The Austin ride was just a ride to the Capital, then return through a different route. Excellent pre & post parties along with some celebration at the Capital. Otherwise simply riding through the streets.
The 2 Houston rides carried us to specific locations to pay respect at sites of bicycle fatalities. We stopped at several locations along the way to celebrate and maybe'grab a beer'. We did have a bit of a pre-party, but nothing at the end as it was after 1am.
I encountered several along the way that either joined us on the spot or promised to be at the next ride.
We stopped at several places along the 2 rides in Houston. (3 - 4 each). All were prearranged with management, all were regular 'no shirt, no shirt, no service' craft breweries or eclectic bars. All but one accepted us nude.  The one proved to be a prank on a junior manager. She was not amused when dozens of nudes walked through the door of her bar. The owner had been contacted and said 'no worries, full support for our cause.'. He either intentionally, or not, failed to inform the manager on duty. She refused to serve us even after we put something on.
The last stop on the last ride was downtown, right on main street, just after midnight, on Saturday. Traffic was at a standstill, and finding bicycle parking was a chore. The only time I was ever photographed more was streaking in the 70's. We covered before entering, but the staff would have none of it, so we stripped off our textiles and socialized with the staff and customers.
Just as the rides in Austin and Houston we're different, rides elsewhere have thier own character. One of the women on our rides in Houston has ridden in Portland, one of the largest rides out there. She spoke highly of both rides. There are a lot of details on various rides, so pick one that fits your expectations.

I have read in news reports here about strip clubs. Alcohol is allowed as long as it’s a topless bar. If there is full nudity no alcohol. The law is referring to the dancers not customers. What’s the rule about alcohol and nudity in Houston?

Did you have to get dressed to have a BEER?

What was the pretext to the Houston ride? They are to protest oil dependence originally, but you all seemed to be just enjoying a naked adventure, sort of protesting anti-dudes/promoting nekkid. Sounds like something that I would enjoy, either way.

I have been involved with the " World Naked Bike Ride" for over ten years. I have been an organizer and participant in both Boston MA and Montpelier VT. Montpelier is just too far and too small of a ride for me to continue with. Boston has been great. They usually have little tolerance for nudity, often shutting down top-freedom protests but have been very accepting of us for some reason.
Philly in the OP article is one of the biggest rides in the world, often attracting thousands of riders. It's on my bucket list to attend.
You can find a list of most of the rides here. At it's peak the WNBR had events in over 75 cities around the world. It seems to be slowing now, not from outside forces but from the lack of organizational support. It's a lot of work to keep these going.
I've only heard of one location being permanently(?) shut down by police. New York City of all places.

Not sure about Houston but here in Boston we do try to keep oil dependence a central topic of our ride. Every rider is free to bring their own cause. As a group we also steer toward  "body acceptance", "bicycle/pedestrian safety", and "gender equality". We always try to be a "pro-test" meaning we advocate for something, not against something. Keeping the mood uplifting and positive.
