I start some stealth trail maintenance and get several surprises.

Good pictures of deer. The deer around here aren't that large. I nearly always see deer tracks on my walks but only occasionally see the deer. Their range, I suspect, is rather larger than mine. Sometimes I have seen five or six together. They might get as close as ten yards but only rarely. If they aren't moving, they're also difficult to spot among the trees and bushes, less so on your front lawn eating your wife's plants. Here, they are practically noiseless as they move through the woods.

Here in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., I have seen more wildlife than anywhere I have ever lived (and there is hunting allowed). But rabbits are scarce, probably because of the foxes, which seem to have become more common. I may have also seen a coyote but I'm not absolutely certain.

Back in the early days of home computing a common program to write as practice was on this subject. You ended up with an offset double waveform. The principle is that as rabbits prosper so, coming behind them, foxes prosper as there’s more food. Then rabbits get scarce because they get eaten, and in due course foxes decline. With fewer predators the rabbits are on the up again .. and so on.

Deer are amazingly common in the UK but a very good at hiding. They don’t come into town, but if you go country walking you’ll sometime catch a glimpse of them in the woods or, very occasionally, crossing open country. No hunting here, except in a few remote moorland areas where only the rich can afford the fees.

I thought it was called stalking or simply shooting. Hunting literally means having to find something. The rich have others to do the hunting for them.

The hunting in the woods behind the house is bow only. No firearms. Maybe spears, too, but I don't know.

This same group of deer occasionally wander through my property. All the vegetation is natural and I have a cage over the veggie garden. I've got pictures of them checking that out. ;)
