'I've Never Hiked Naked Before': The Government Shutdown Changed That
Elizabeth Whitman | January 18, 2019 | 6:00am

Brandon Hankins didn't plan on taking off all his clothes.

It just felt like the natural thing to do, on a day in early January at Arizona's Chiricahua National Monument, with the federal government shut down and no one to see or stop him.

I had thought about doing something like that, but I was sick a lot during the shutdown. Glad to see that it worked and so well. That place is pretty full and an odd day would be necessary to nude hike it, according to DF. Once back in there, however, you are away from the main trailhead in  maze. Its got potential. All the photos that I've seen make it look very fun. Mid week, off season, get further away from the trailhead. Then I figured I'd determine the degree of stealth after seeing and assessing the place first. I haven't been there. There are plenty of places to go in that mountain range, but that hoodoo spot with the visitor center gets traffic because the formations are so fun. It is easy to be surprised I surmise. Not a place with much water and shorter distances, so it is a day hike thing.

We did Cochise Stronghold off season, when it is closed to a horde of campers.

I'm surprised that the Phoenix press gives free hiking such a positive green light.

Excellent grasping of opportunity there by that chap.  And a non critical article too.  Well done.  We should invite him to join up here!

One important thing for us to do is to encourage the authors with such a positive spin and their editors. There is contact information for Elisabeth Whitman who wrote this. There is contact for the paper that published this.

The bosses and editors need to think of this as a popular important story. The author needs encouragement and support to write more of this. She'll talk to her colleagues and peers.

She might be interested that BN has accomplished free range legality and the British Isles are not quaking.

Let's send them several notes appreciating and educating them over the next week.

These lands are not quaking because they don't know it's happened!  The BN articles and bits of other PR that we've seen are probably insufficient to be seen by many.
But the fact that the new guidance exists is the important thing.  Unfortunately it's probably going to need a test case to get it well known.

The longer that it is a policy and there are no problems, there is a better case for it. One day people will wake up to it and realize that any nudity laws are not worth the trouble to have.

The idea of the guidance is that it won’t produce a test case. Simply, more people will get out and walk naked, other people will notice, and those who contact the police will be informed that simply walking naked is not against the law. Well, that’s the theory....

The guidance was in large part a response to the number of unsuccessful prosecutions of naturists, to bring police action in line with the law as written and demonstrated through court decisions.
