Coach and Horses is now clothing optional!
« on: June 29, 2019, 08:35:26 PM »
I've heard of this place, somewhere, sometime. Why is it so famous? Was it just something I saw back during a London visit in the mid-1960's? Anyway, it is now clothing optional! Who's going?

Looked it up on Google Maps.  Looks as though the place needs a USP!  Whilst I admire the publican's attempt to create a little island of naturist freedom, the pub is in one of the busiest areas in London so it will attract an unsavoury element, I have no doubt.  Next time I'm near Greek Street, I might look in. (I was 2 mins from that Pub only 2 or 3 weeks ago).  Mind you, in central London I wouldn't leave my trousers anywhere - they may not be there when you need to put them on again!!

Seems this was a storm in a half-pint mug. The idea was to have nude themed events rather than be a CO venue, and even that failed when the pub suddenly changed hands. Looks like a non-starter.

Yes, bit of a damp squib that, but no news outlet could resist the words "nudist license"! I've never heard of such a thing, but maybe it was a publicity stunt, when what they had was really some sort of license for sexually-oriented entertainment. Not that I'm sure that exists either, but it seems a lot more likely.

It reminds me of the Monty Python skit with John Cleese earnestly trying to buy a license for his pet fish, while a bureaucrat equally earnestly tried to convince him he didn't need one.

It is curious how things are. You have to license a dog but not a cat--I think. Never having had a dog, I'm not positive about that. It might be one of those things you've heard that isn't true, like how it's illegal to drive a car barefooted.

Citizen (Cleese): Hello, I would like to buy a fish license, please.
Bureaucrat (Palin): A what?
Citizen: “A license for my pet fish, Eric”
Bureaucrat: “How did you know my name was Eric?”

Cracked me up again after all these years.
See here for words and here for the soundtrack. Couldn’t find any video.
Also reminded me of the “Fish Slapping Dance”.

A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.

You are a little behind the times. Dog licences were abolished around 1970-72 in UK. They cost 7s 6d I think and the money ‘wasn’t worth collecting’. Big mistake, I think. They should just have put up the price considerably and used the money for dog wardens etc. There are now far too many dogs, too many people with multiple dogs and too many badly behaved dogs/owners.

Cats never needed licence because the are treated as wild - essentially, uncontrollable, and not the same kind of potential threat as some powerful dogs.

Here, where I live, dogs four months and older are required to have a license tag renewed annually. It costs $10. The fee is waived for service dogs. As far as I know, there were never licenses for horses or horse-drawn vehicles, which is not to say they were unregulated.
