The well behaved have facilities withdrawn because of the badly behaved yet again.

Our non-landed club in the 1990's had been doing well, 70 dues paying and a core of regulars. It was mostly daily run by a woman. She was the one who answered the phone. Then, she married and moved north. Our group eventually became a men's group without her. We disbanded. A few friends kept in touch. It just wasn't the fun that it had been and women didn't come back. No hassle, just no other women for women.

That club keeps gay men out, too, it would appear. There is no mention of two men as a couple.

I understand there are clubs just for men.

Well, we can all be glad that we're Free Range Naturists, and not interested in those places where you can take your clothes off but still end up wearing gates and fences.

The rule at the Bare Oaks resort in Ontario is that they give a discount to couples, but couples can be any two people: you and your dear spouse, you and your gay lover, you and your best buddy, even you and a stranger who've arranged to meet outside the gate and never saw each other before. They used to have a rule saying they might insist on gender balance, but after never invoking it for a few years, they dropped it. If a place is limited to couples, I wonder if it's a partner-swapping place. Though there's a couples-only resort in New Hampshire, and it's very strict about conduct.

Yes, there are male-only resorts, but I'm sure nobody goes except gay guys. But some of us have got in the habit of doing a lot of naturist activities with male friends, typically married guys whose wives aren't interested. See most of my trip reports here! It works out fine, in fact knowing who'll be there probably reassures some of the stay-at-home wives.

Although I have no objections at all about clubs and resorts, both they and urban meet-up hiking outings have limitations, thought not the same ones. The missing element is "free," although I don't mean in the financial sense. Both with and without clothing, the one thing I miss from the past is the freedom to up and go whenever the spirit moved me, any time of the year. Hiking with someone else, even the wife, means more organization and compromises and usually leaving about four hours later than I would by myself.

Of course, I was younger then but I don't miss that as much.

Naturally there are other differences. In fact, everything is different. Although there are trails leading from my back door, I am otherwise further from really good places, meaning secluded and less visited. And that means it takes more time and money. Even though the cost (of driving) isn't very much, cost is always a consideration. Mostly though, it means that an outing is something that needs to be planned for, at least in theory. I guess I could drop everything and leave first thing in the morning but I haven't done that for a while. At the moment, though, the heat is a little too much.

On the other hand, freedom's just another word for nothing else to do.

I have in the past been subject to discrimination against single men by naturist clubs.  Two of them wouldn't take me as a member as a single male and one of them would take me but wanted a signed affidavit from my wife that she wouldn't divorce me for naturism!
Just what is it they are frightened of?  Is a man by virtue of his singularity automatically a sexual pervert or some sort of undesirable nuisance?
Surely a reasonably organised club can get rid of anybody who annoys others with unacceptable behaviour as and when it happens and not take the easiest way out by ridiculous levels of risk aversion, banning anyone who might feasibly have any of the attributes of being a nuisance i.e. being a lone male.  That attribute is certainly not diagnostic of what a man is like as a club member.  And what's so safe about couples anyway?  One member of a couple might be a right pervert but by virtue of their pairing automatically gets accepted without question.
This discriminatory practice is bigotry and hypocrisy of the first order.

It is my impression that the majority of naturists are men and amongst our age group men outnumber women considerably.  It's no wonder naturist clubs find it hard to survive at least in the UK - they only cater to a small minority of the market.

As an aside to this - my wife has only ever felt uncomfortable about male attention from a married man who was with his naturist wife.
This was definitely not an approach from a swinger couple but simply bad behaviour. Our experience of being approached by swingers has been polite, low key and without any pressure whatsoever.

I showed up to a now defunct place in middle Arizona back in the 1990's. I had my young son with me. The woman put us through that ringer. We just wants to swim. She figured child molester, Where's the mother!?! I felt extremely unwelcome.

Sexism on the single parent was outlandish, cost me many thousands. Women popping up, "Oh you poor thing, where's his mom." I'd go to attorneys and be told that I have an excellent case (she was a mess) normally it would be a slam dunk, but because you are a male, your chances are 50/50 that you will loose the custody that you have, if you go to court, just because you are a male. When I got child support after several years of struggle, being single guy raising the child 90% of the time and still having to pay, or baby sitters when he wasn't, the state took over a two months to figure out how to pay me, thought that I was scamming. Woman behind the desk out and out telling me I'm a bad parent when all she knew of me was my sex, "A kid is better off with a mother....on and on.

Nope, father son naturist outings are uphill.

It’s Palm Springs! What else would you expect in such an exclusive, elitist environment.

I’ve been there, seen it and have no desire to go back. If necessary I will drive through it to get somewhere else.

The well behaved are also well coifed, well nipped and well tucked. Brrrr. Strange culture!

The downside, JohnP is that Bare Oaks is in Ontario, Canada.
Maybe they will open a branch in Ontario, California. I would go to that one.

I was just doing a little research about one particular club in order to respond to a comment on another board (didn't find the info I wanted, so I didn't respond) and was disappointed to read some rather mixed reviews. The complaints were the lopsided male-female ratio and the overly forward nature of some of the men there. To at least one reviewer, it was a borderline swinger place. Others, however, made no such comments. In either case, it didn't sound too much like a family friendly place. Other places specifically advertise themselves as strictly couples and families only. So, yeah, some clubs are decidedly sexist, choosy, particular, careful and--family friendly, whatever they might mean by that. But I'm not interested in clubs anyway.

On the other hand, it is well to take reviews with a grain of salt, especially complaints. I imagine the differences are in the expectations of the guests (at the clubs). One reviewer, on a different subject, mentioned that the facilities were old but well-maintained. It might be that rustic and especially run-down establishments just don't cut it these days. But someone said that those who complained tended to complain about everything all the time anyway.

And you know, it might also be possible that our image of a perfect nudist club (circa 1955) is false.

It is and wants to continue to be a heterosexual place, where women will not be hit on by single men. It is not a place for family naturism. They will have trouble keeping out the gay women and women may be hit upon by gay women. If that's what you want, there should be no guys meddling with other uncomfortable guys women, except swingers.

A resort hotel is one thing, but another is the ma and pa nudist colony approach. People live there, are invested there, have ownership and community. They tend to self enforce, rather than allow their place to be anything else but family and friendly. In any small town, there will be discrete differences played out, gossip, etc., but sexual urge is played down...maybe something with the weekend crowd.

I don’t know if they are the same everywhere but you get places that do allow single people (make it not) and charge the same price as they do for couples and families.

Any place that allows only couples and single women suggest to me that they are not serious about naturism.

We had a legally married female couple visit us in august who complained about another club who also don’t take singles, men or women. They wouldn’t accept them as a couple despite being married and living together.
