I suppose it would make just as much sense today as it made then--that is, if it made sense. Today, though, the pool would be cleaner if they kept out the people and just threw in the bathing suits. Some pools did keep out some of the people.

None of the schools in my area were rich enough to afford a swimming pool but I do remember going to the Y to swim and until the middle of the 60's we swam nude. As for the polluted swimming holes, all of us in my neighborhood skinny dipped well into out teen years.

I think schools around here might be rich enough but none have them. There are swimming classes, however, that are held in county rec centers (which the county can afford, I guess). In fact, we took the cub scouts to the nearest one for an outing once. None of them had any problem with nudity in the shower area and locker room (same room). But most of them were active on swim teams.

My small hometown did not have a YMCA but another small town not too far away had one. But it had no swimming pool. The building is still there but I don't believe it's a Y anymore. The town has less than 3,000 inhabitants but it has an Amtrak station. The county I live in has over a million inhabitants and there is only one YMCA in the county. But it has a pool!

Nude swimming at my (all boys) school wasn't specifically prohibited but it wasn't compulsory either.  I believe, looking back, that my naturism started at this period although I never quite realised what it was.  After sessions in the gym or on the playing field (which I hated) we would be allowed to go for a quick dip in the school swimming pool and if you didn't happen to have remembered your swimming costume, it was no problem you could dip nude.  I found this sensual and pleasurable although in the circumstances not erotic.  I just liked nude swimming and on many occasions 'just happened' to forget my speedos when it wasn't too obvious.  It once got remarked on by another boy who had spotted that I forgot my costume rather regularly.  I haven't any recollection of what I replied on that occasion but as I say, looking back, I must have had a naturist inclination even then.  Pity I didn't realise it and do more to develop my proclivity in earlier years.  I might have become a much bolder and experienced naturist, found the appropriate community and able to enjoy it much more often today.
