I was surprised at your comment about the mown trails through the trees. Mown (or paved) trails typify woodland paths in UK.
That's a difference between US and UK - If you're on a mown trail in UK woodland you can bet that you wont be alone - there'll be walkers and dogs a plenty!
The trick (Secret Naturist Technique) is to get away from those paths into the thicker growth. But we just don't have such huge areas of woodland - so as soon as you think you've got out of sight of the path behind, there's another one up front! Any woodland in our fair land is very scarce indeed that you can walk in for hours, like you and DF do, without coming out the other side!
