Anasyrma
« on: January 03, 2024, 08:34:47 PM »
Mooning and flashing have had a varied and useful history!
I came across this unfamiliar word while looking into ways to conflict the censorship of mere nudity on the internet. If nudity is tossed into the realms of porn by the corporate powers that bought the internet, it is a teaching and reinforcement of the ideas that the sight of our bodies is improper, immodest, indecent, or even evil and dangerous
One thing lead to another and I discovered anasyrma.
I looked it up. Here's Wikipedia for starters:
Many historical references suggest that anasyrma had dramatic or supernatural effect...
..I wrote this on Word and it isn't allowed to transfer over here. I tried pasting the text of the article directly, and this site isn't allowing me to. Try looking up wikipedias posting about Anasyrma, th esection called "Apotropaic Effect of Nakedness."
It's interesting.

So, there is power perceived in nakedness.
I think back to Mel Gibson, ...This is still not allowing me to post, unless  write directly to t esite!?!?...

...I think back I think back to Mel Gibson, "Braveheart," it is disarming , disconcerting to someone trying to be serious to drop the dress up that symbolizes and legitimates a socio-cultural game. In that case war. It can make a joke out of someone's serious imposition. I'm sure that that has been a driving force in the repression of nudity, as it is taken as an afront to the status quo and its controls, from hippies dancing naked, to irreverant kids sticking their butts out of car windows as they pass. It is defiant against repression. It undermines authority and is free expression. It is liberating.

In this state statute law, it is legal to use nudity in protest, but not in protest of the anti-nudity statutes.

Well, well!  That "You learn something new every day" is a very true thing.  It's amazing how many things have a posh name!  Can't wait to expose myself to the wife and say "That's an ancient greek anasyrma for you, dear.  Its apotropaic and it'll ward off the evil spirits."  I'm sure she will reply something to emphasise the childishness of this ineffective stroke of wit.  ....And she'd be right!! :D :D

Just yesterday I was watching various You-tube videos and one was on ancient Roman culture.  Apparently raising and flapping the front of a toga was the common way of Roman audiences showing approval.  Flapping a toga and showing off your genitals was common for centuries at theaters and sports arenas.   If the speaker had used the word "anasyrma" I missed it for not knowing what it meant.  Clapping became popular when togas went out of fashion.

Many Romans went naked all summer too.  Clothes were too expensive for most slaves.  Rich Romans only wore togas for formal occasions, and their togas were only a simple cloth draped over shoulders, but not preventing cool breeze on lower bodies.

When I was younger mooning was not uncommon.  I can recall driving through Seattle with my passengers' bare rears hinging out car windows.

I find it strange that none of the on-line dictionaries I looked at give a pronunciation.  Instead they give Greek spelling.  The practice is probably older than Rome.

Holy flapping togas!

Does that tell me that our social customs have evolved, or devolved...as far as casual nudity, or exposure go? ???
