This discussion always reminds me of a question, a quote and a natural law:

The quote:
I wasn't really naked. I simply didn't have any clothes on. - Josephine Baker

The question (typically misquoted):
How many angels can dance on the point of a very fine needle, without jostling one another? - Anonymous

The natural law:
If anything can go wrong, it will. - Capt. Edward A. Murphy, USAF
A law stated in succinct brevity by two acronyms, "SNAFU" & "FUBAR"

I suppose labels are important to some. It doesn't matter what the labels are. Someone is going to come along that doesn't fit and you have to reorganize them or add to them, increasing the effort. I have better things to do than worry whether I meet the criteria of a group.

For me, today I am a naturist, tommorrow I will be a nudist and yesterday I was something else. My reasons for preferring nudity do not comply with most of the definitions I have seen.

So, like Bob, I choose when, where and why.
It's just easier to keep track that way.

I love that Josephine Baker quote, “I wasn't really naked. I simply didn't have any clothes on.”

For several years now, I simply haven’t had any clothing on more than 90% of the time. I haven’t been naked, but some of the time and that is something that I personally felt. I have also felt nekkid. It hasn’t been just because I like the state of nudity, but that I typically don’t like being clothed, either. Something warm, something festive, a costume, all can be pleasurable, I embrace these on occasion. Am I a nudist, the anti-clothier, anti- textile, a naturist? When I wear clothing in public, am I in disguise? Is my wearing clothing in public a form of dishonesty?

I can be any of these. Each may describe my attitude or activity at the time more appropriately, or with more clarity. It is the eloquent beauty and bane of the English language, as most any post by Nuduke will attest, that this tendency to define gives us.

Bill Shakespeare’s quote must be included:
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;

I must add this. When I am nude in my home I have faculties to enjoy, explore and expand my senses, yet out in nature, especially the more pristine, that is a greatly enhanced experience, and I am a naturist. I am not a nudist in nature, I am more nature itself.

Incidentally, this is July 8th, 2015. Today, The Secret Naturist Society would have been 15 years old.
No more birthdays, but somehow here, the society is still alive. We ARE The Secret Naturist Society.

The secretnaturistsociety.org registration was not renewed and has expired.  It is now listed as "Domain Status: autoRenewPeriod."   That is a grace period for the original registrant to wake up and renew the domain.  At some point it will become available again, but its a strange name and we really don't need it any longer.  This forum is just as good, perhaps better.

Duane

I check into HikingNaked.com nearly daily. He frequents that. If I don't tell him upon his return, then I'm sure that Nudewalker will mention this arrangement to him. He was doing some other hiking in the near region after the Grand Canyon nude rafting trip. I'm sure that he will be very excited, tired and full of stories, overwhelmed by the volume of internet news, a gigzillion photos to sort through and a longing for his wife's company amongst life.

I sent Dan a PM through hiking naked.com and told him of the demise of TSNS and where to find us. With all that time away there may also be catch up te at work too. I'm confident he'll find his way here soon.

I prefer the term naturist because I feel that being free of clothing is a natural state, and the term nudist has been distorted by the media to mean something bad, even distorted to mean partially clothed, especially in the US, and I'll give you the "Naked cowboy" in New York as an example. He is not naked, and another term often used is "near naked" and I would suggest that you are either naked, or you are not, there is no "near naked".

Rather than try to invent new words or terminology I would prefer to defend the term naturist,  which has been mistaken,  or deliberately hijacked, to give sleazy establishments an air of respectability. I know of at least three placesin the UK that use the word 'naturist' in their title, but are swingers or gappy ending massage parlours.

A few years ago an establishment was advertising it's grand opening as a naturist bar, with details of exotic shows and naked pole dancers. They were approached by a representative of British Naturism and agreed to withdraw the use of the word 'naturism' when their error was explained to them.

About two years ago I initiated a meeting of naturist groups to discuss, among other things, a plan to make 'naturism' a protected word, unfortunately it didn't get much further than that.

If, as naturists, we don't take a stand, whatever new word or term we invent it will be hijacked by others, or distorted to mean something else.

So, I'm staying with naturist for the time being!

Setting certain words, phrases, names as off limits is something I find disquieting, no matter the forum. That could be a long and very slippery slope.

I have a thick skin as far as strong or "offensive" speech is concerned.

When I sent out that email to everyone on Yahoo! jmf was on the list. I didn’t get a bounce back, so maybe he got the message. He may show up, who knows.

The forum software has an option for automatically converting words to a safe version, such as masking with asterisks etc. I haven't bothered to list any words on this forum. On my previous forum I used it for adding in easter eggs. It was a little game. Someone might refer to a politician, read over their post and see that they had referred to the "Prince of Darkness, destroyer of all balance sheets and sausage rolls" or something similar. Easter eggs would get replaced with something else when they were discovered.

My thoughts are that words themselves aren't actually offensive, it's the intention behind how they are used that can be offensive. That can only be handled with moderation.

Sorry, easter egg is a geeky term for when a developer has added in a little feature that's not meant to be there which then later gets discovered. For example, there used to be a flight simulator easter egg in Excel 97. There's a clip of youtube of it but obviously run on a much faster computer than what it was intended for:

Where do you find all this?

Is there a website for this stuff?
