The Old site
« on: June 30, 2015, 03:16:50 AM »
Not knowing much about how forums and sites are set up and since the old site is KAPUT:

Would it be possible to create a dummy name using the old website name that merely posts a message that we are located here, or redirects the user?

Either to this one or a subsequent new one.

I am not very up to speed on this sort of thing, but I get redirected all the time to different sites when I try to access an old site I haven't been to in a while.

Just wondering,
Duane

I'm afraid the owner of the domain name would have to do that.

Normally you can set it up so a domain name forwards to another one and this is normally free. I did that with

http://www.free-range-naturism.com/ automatically forwarding to http://www.freerangenaturism.com/

Not that I expected anyone to use the version with hashes but as happened last time with naked munros, if you don't buy it yourself and you get a lot of traffic then someone else will buy to make money and present adverts.

The problem is that his account has been cancelled. Now where your domain is parked might not be where the domain is being hosted in which case it's not a problem. If it's parked at the same company and they have cancelled his account then he needs to get it back somehow.

I saw the domain name offered for sale...$10.88.

What to do with it?

Interesting.  Poll the group for next steps.  Either "we" buy it and nominate an admin or two or we let the legacy stay as is.  The elders should weigh in.  If I understand correctly from Paul and Karla's expertise, if the same rules affiliate hosts the server they will shut it down right off.  Who are among the geek squad in the SNS team?

Certainly not me. I’m learning rudimentary language and moving slowly to avoid pitfalls on my near future site. I looked around to see if there was a forum package on the net to start a forum. The ones that I looked at are difficult to know what they actually offer. The sales pitch is kinda vague. We are good where we are, but pictures will be a hassle. It appeared to me, but I’m not at all certain that a free forum would limit us to 10 gigs. I was looking for something more expansive that might keep an archive of pics.

The people that I’m looking at for my blog have free 10 gigs, but a much better package if you pay a $150 each year. These blog (not forum) packages all seem to be low hundred to 200 buck propositions. I’m wondering if Karla and Stuart’s provider have a pay for plan that would accommodate photos amongst text. Maybe we each could chip in 20 or thirty bucks a year to pay for it. Then there is accumulating the money, pay pal or something and international currency. There is enough core here of means that value the group and its purpose enough to contribute two bucks a month. Nudewalker has set up such a system at his HikingNaked site, which is a forum. The forum system there would probably become a haywire chaos of organization in no time and it doesn’t do pic very well either.
Stuart, Karla, any chance to expand the system? We would have to set it up so that you would be secure to not be left holding the bag, but if that were assured?

I’m gonna look/shop some more. You do know that it was Tanman who lobbied for more photos in the reports? Great idea, he was absolutely correct, but now, we are spoiled. ;D

I checked with the registrar where my own web sites are registered and find that it's "not available."  That probably means its being held by the company that formerly registered it for Lookee.

I looked up on ICNN and found this:

Updated Date: 2014-07-08
Created Date: 2001-07-08
Registration Expiration Date: 2015-07-08

That means that the current registrar will probably not pay for renewal since they no longer have a customer.   An unregistered name goes back into the pool available to virtually anyone.  There is a fee to the registrar for maintaining your registration but any registrar can register an available name.

It would cost me some small amount to add it to my own existing domains.  maybe I'll check next week.

However, i don't see why we can't all enjoy this forum just as much.  Our hosts here are nudists who are friendly to nudist activity.

As long as the photo thing can be worked out, so as to not inhibit trip reports and enhancement of explanations, I've been made to feel very comfortable here, myself. An small SN specific section, maybe themed photos and we're just about like the old site other than the white canvas, which takes time and fun to color in.

Maybe on July 8th, DF and I will get naked on a mountaintop and do a re-birthing ceremony. From the ashes, we rise once again, younger, stronger, a slightly new paradigm, with two new active members of the highest quality.

Should we poll this?

I agree completely with that summation, Bob!

The only reason I brought this up was it might be a way to make it easier for old members, that no one knows how to contact, who will try the old site and end up here. That would only be necessary until we determine it is no longer needed.

If it's too expensive, Bob, don't worry about it. We'll survive either way. It would simply make it convenient for any old member.

According to my domain provider it would cost about £12.00 a year, however, a domain is not usually released as soon as it lapses; there is a cooling off period before it will become available again for anyone other than the previous registered owner.

Have fun,

Ian.

I found that took about three months when I tried to buy back the .co.uk version of naked munros

I am sure we can survive on this site but a big attraction of the old site was the ability to post photos. They add so much more to reports, especially ones like jbee used to post. I wonder if the increase in traffic on this forum is causing any bandwidth problems for Stuart and Karla.

None so far. We're not anticipating problems anytime soon either, we have a lot of bandwidth and our main site is quite picture intense anyway.

I have posted photos here.  No problems using links from Flickr as I always did over at SNS.

As a reader I always hated the SNS directly posted photos because half of them wouldn't show up unless clicked on and opened in a new window.  Pain in the arse.  Just post a link from a photo bucket site.  No problems.

I'm with Bob on this. There is a secondary benefit of posting using an image link to another site; you can place the picture where you want it in the text instead of them all being lumped together at the eend of the post.

I generally use Flickr but have also used Dropbox and ImageShack in the past.

Have fun,

No, no! Not another new technology to learn! My brain hurts!

I've seen how Bob & Ian's posts look and would agree that they make a clean and neat arrangement in the post. I am not anti tech by even the broadest definition, but sometimes I get annoyed by the constant suggestions by developers that my life would be

"O so much more enhanced if only I would . . . ".

Or the repeated updates than aren't really updates but rewrites that demand that you spend time re-organizing how you use their software. Sometimes as I gaze wistfully over the fence, the Luddite grass seems to have a brighter shade of green. Then I meet a Luddite and the brightness fades.

I am still running an old PC with Windows XP, my cell phone is about 8 yrs. old and is a flip phone. I don't use any of the social media services. I get messages on my phone and when I look the screen says, "Unknown Format". I forward it to my email to read them. For me it is a ratio of annoyance/benefit and if the ratio is off in the wrong direction, I wait. I've learned that the pursuit of the latest and greatest always chewed up more of my time than it seemed to save.

It would be unreasonable for me to demand that others adjust to my stubborn ways. I'll learn this new way because now it is better to do it than to ignore it. The upside is by the time I get around to embracing a new method, most of the bugs have been worked out.

I'll survive.
