What area is in? Is it remote or in a more developed area? I would think that it would be on some historic preservation list.

This is in the English Midlands in a quiet rural area with a low population density. However, there are fairly large towns about 8 miles north and south and this is a popular footpath and cycle track connecting them. I hardly saw anybody when I was there 10 or so years ago, but there are more people about now, especially at weekends.

I ran into the side of the tunnel while riding through a particularly dark section. Humans have little to no proximity sense in the dark. I ended up with a scraped right arm.

I'm glad it's not just me who has trouble keeping my balance in this situation. I thought being able to see daylight at the end of the tunnel would serve as a reference point, but it didn't. It was too small and too distant.

Maybe its just because the Internet makes people more public, but I've seen a lot more discussion of public nudity in the last few years than any time in my life.

I have to agree with Bob there has been more chatter on the internet in the past few years than anytime I can remember from earlier times. Maybe because there is a certain amount of anonymity behind a keyboard and screen but at least there is movement toward an acceptance of nudity. I remember being thrilled to find a forum dedicated to naked hiking; not only acceptance but there were others out there who were like minded. There also seems to be a movement away from "farmed" nudism to more of a free range type of experience. Like the song goes, "the future's so bright I gotta wear shades!

More importantly I'm seeing an attitude change among my nieces and nephews. They're twenty something's but some of the discussions that we've had at reunions and such revealed that they don't have body hang-ups. One attends nude yoga classes, others have been to nude beaches and some even are home nudists. It's a shame we live so far apart to share time and experiences but it does make me feel optimistic!

My wife and I hope to visit the UK someday and love poking around in historical sites.

I thought of the 'end of the tunnel' trick also, but maybe the farther away it is the harder it is too use as a reference.

In the photo I posted at the start of this topic you can't see the other end because there is a curve in the middle of the tunnel.   Bring a flashlight or torch (for you UK folks).   Its not a good place to ride a bike, get off and walk through the tunnel.   I also worry a little about what animals may be seeking shelter in there.
