Naked Bicycle Riding in Seattle
« on: August 05, 2015, 02:42:02 PM »
In Seattle they have the regular WNBR on a Saturday afternoon, but that's not enough naked time for many riders.  So they have extra naked bike rides through the city.  Last week they had a night naked bike ride complete with lights to light up the naked bodies.  Seattle citizens and police have become so accustomed to seeing naked bicycle riders that ride organizers no longer even bother to inform the police of an upcoming naked event.  Ten or a thousand naked bicyclists are just not a police matter, and the local print or TV media doesn't bother reporting it either.  Reading through the post they had so much fun they are wanting to do it again.

This trip report describes about 20 miles through the down town area and then to the north part of the city.

This was from a Yahoo Group called WNBR Seattle 3

We met at Denny Park; the sound of a piano softly plinking away in the dark.  It was a warm summer night with a blue moon - soon to be joined by several other moons on bike seats for the last night of July and our after dark version of the world naked bike ride.

Ten arrived to ride that night, plus two long-time supporters to encourage us and offer signs for our bicycles.  Many colorful lights were displayed as we disrobed and headed out towards Denny & Dexter.  Unfortunately, even though the temperature was high our two "virgins" got cold feet and decided against riding with us.  Undaunted, the remaining eight naked cyclists met the city head on.

We traveled through Belltown down Third; switched to Second and made our way down to Pioneer Square.  Many hoots and cheers and applause as we breezed by passersby and people dining and drinking on the sidewalks.  Supportive car horns and a very enthusiastic van full of children with their mother were encountered.  After Pioneer Square, we ventured up First towards Pike Place Market.  Along the way, our most senior rider (a 70-year-young gentleman) bid us adieux as he didn't think his knees would hold out for the rest of our journey.  Then we were seven - small but mighty.

Back through Belltown we rode after the Market.  Then, through South Lake Union to Dexter to give Fremont a show.  Along the way, a friend of one of our riders spotted us and we stopped so they could chat.  The glasses worn as a disguise didn't stop the friend from recognizing our rider's naked body.

Fremont was lively with many people out and about on sidewalks and shouting praises from open windows of bars and clubs.  We carried on via Leary to Ballard to see the nightlife there and found a motorcyclist gathering which was raucous and entertained by our presence.  Then it was back to our adoring fans in Fremont once again where we ended the night feasting on chocolate.  A good time was had by all.

If someone wishes to organize another night ride, I am sure there would be enthusiasm for one.  Please know that Jenna is asking folks to join her to ride in the buff for the Dead Baby Run this coming Friday.

As you have observed before, Bob, repeated sightings of well behaved naked people eventually generate a non-response.

Well, WNBR has finally arrived in Las Vegas. I wasn’t aware that this was planned, not that I would have participated. The bike ride itself starts at 8:00pm. There could be several reasons for the late time of the start of the ride, from the summer heat to traffic concerns. This museum is located just west of the strip and traffic on the strip or anywhere near it is mind numbingly tedious.

I am wondering about the association with the Erotic Heritage Museum. I remember when this place opened thinking that it was yet another titillating offering to the tourists. Haven’t been to it, nor am I likely to, so I don’t know much about it. It closed after about 6 yrs. due to disagreements amongst the owners and landlord. Haaaah, what a surprise. It has since reopened with a different branding and owners.

The trouble is probably trying to label the sex business, in all it’s varied guises, as a legitimate concern for academic study (i.e. a museum). I’m sure it’s a tough line to follow without heading off into smarmy discussions with a nod and a wink or a dispassionate clinical presentation of body parts and functions.

I read about the ride in the paper this morning. It’s the 1st I had heard about it. I looked it up online, because apparently the paper didn’t cover it. The notice I read in the paper was in a gossip column. The only reason I saw it was it was the lead headline on the column.

Much of what I found online seemed to treat it as an amusing story with caveats at the end about what the laws are and to be careful or you might get arrested or cited. A couple of attempts at a straight story are here and here.

On reading the laws here with regard to public nudity and indecency I suppose it’s good someone is taking on the repressed viewpoint on the subject. The woman organizing the ride makes specific reference to the hypocritical stance taken by the government in the state, county and cities. So much of the entertainment, I use the word loosely, is centered around nudity, eroticism and sex that the laws affecting the citizens are at complete odds with those in “the business”. I can see why people want laws like that. They don’t want to deal with this on a personal level. They want someone else to handle it so they don’t have to see it.

A frank discussion of these matters within families and their kids would go much further than trying to regulate multiple segments of society and/or culture by using different sets of laws specific to each group. It makes for cumbersome law, murky and confusing rulings or decisions and gets people annoyed. If this event causes a conversation about the laws, I guess the sponsor of the event is irrelevant.

It does associate the ideas of normal public nudity with an organization affiliated with the “sex business”. Unfortunate, but no one else has stepped forward, including me, to challenge the pretzel laws regulating this.

I’ve always wondered why the ride never happened here. We’ll see what the response is from the media, the casinos (the elephants in the room) and law enforcement. The police have to try and enforce confusing and often contradicting laws, rules and regulations. I am certain mistakes will be made.

Checked the paper today and no report about the ride.

Googled it online and no report of how it went.

Found this article from some enterprising lawyers attempting to drum up some business, just in case.

But so far I haven't found any mention of the event, if it happened.  ???

Naked in Seattle has become so common that a hundred naked bicycle riders is no longer a news item.  People on the street just smile and wave as the naked peloton goes by.

Seattle has become an example of persistent nudity over some years becoming almost common.  Not an event.  Not something to write home about.  Not news.

I'm still watching the local news to see the reaction. So far I haven't seen anything.

With all the sex related business I am surprised that there has been no reporting. I know it sounds odd, but something as benign as a bike ride would have triggered something.

Either a response from the news people simply for the TA factor or some kind of pushback from those that think any thing that remotely looks like nudity must be sex business.

Nothing. I guess that's a positive?

Never having ridden a bike actually naked (least lower cover so far was in swim shorts), I am consumed with curiosity.  Doesn't the saddle gradually work its way up one's bum crack and make it more uncomfortable to ride?  I also find on my own bike, fully clothed (with a wide padded saddle) that every now and again I have shifted into a position that puts pressure on the scrotum and its valuable contents!  If you ride a long way naked, doesn't it become uncomfortable?  This is not an argument for wearing clothes whilst cycling but a curious request to alleviate my ignorance.  It is my limited experience that presents the problem of understanding as nude cycling  is very evidently not a problem to do, and indeed to sustain for long distances, for most riders.

I've only ridden for short distances while completely naked, but that hasn't happened to me and I think unlikely to happen on a longer ride.

My problem is that I never know what to do with the testicles. I'm not comfortable with putting them on either side of the saddle and neither am I with resting them on the saddle. Perhaps it's something to do with the type of saddle I use. I actually prefer to wear a thong while riding a bike. In theory this would give me licence to cycle in more public places, if only it wouldn't cause a stir, especially at my age!

Ah, professor.  So we have two pieces of empirical evidence of orchiseal discomfort when vehiculating on a bicycle.  Anybody else find the nuts difficult to deal with on a bike?

Several years ago...ten...I had black bike shorts painted on me. I took my sons bike and cruised the River Road parkway. I rode approximately ten miles on a full moon evening and then back. I had his common seat covered with a cloth t keep it clean. There was no difficulty with the gonadial regions. Inter thighs had a very slight chafe. I pedaled most of the way as the bike had but one gear left at the time.

Could thousand of WNBR enthusiasts be wrong?

Is that a pun or a malaprop? I have tried to undermine the meaning of the word but have flailed.
Please extricate! Google hasn't!

Vehiculating on a bicycle is risky. I will say that focusing on the handlebar is more important than eliminating your speech.

Although focusing becomes more challenging the longer you focus on the Handel Bar.

From my youth I had a bicycle and was taught the proper wenches to use on the nuts and that having a tool of the right size was important.

Did I get that wrong? Were you referring to the nuts who might "flail" into a tizzy at the sight of an older guy in a thong, Nuduke?

Eyesup, Was "Wench" a typo, or one of those Freudian thangs and you meant wrench?

I'm very confused, but having a good laugh.

As someone with, I suspect, more experience of bare bums on saddles than most, I have never experienced any discomfort or soreness relating to the fact that I was naked. This applies to both my own bike and several that I have hired in Fuerteventura or borrowed in New Zealand. Thinking of my fellow WNBRers, I would imagine that a majority neither rode naked often nor rode very far on a regular basis. My genitals rest very comfortably on top of the saddle, but this could of course vary depending on one's conformation.

I ride regularly with only a one thin layer of polyester between my skin and the saddle, and with nothing there as often as I can. I am extremely fortunate in that there is a Forestry Commission wood only a couple of miles from where I live, in which naked riding is possible early in the morning using a route with hilly access as remote from the car parks as I can get At this time of the year 'early' means 05 30 to just after 06 00. This year a cuckoo or maybe cuckoos have been very vocal. It is a lovely time of day.
Tomorrow morning is looking promising - warm, humid and dry. All I have to do is wake up in time!

I was a bit apprehensive about Orchiseal.  It is meant to be an adjective referring to the testicle(s).
The latin and medical english for testicle is orchis.  If you have a testicle surgically removed it is an orchidectomy.
However, orchideal didn't appear in dictionaries so I coined orchiseal.  Basically I sought a posh word for bollocks and in doing so created some!
