Swimming IN school
« on: November 17, 2015, 07:42:36 AM »
Wow, somebody has done some great homework in Portland. Look what I found in my email:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eznEFMp6odU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNxNnywZ3tU

I remember "ol Dave Digget the swimming/P.E. coach calling us girls on the days that the issued swim suits didn't come back from the laundry and when some of us griped about having to skinnydip. "What if the girls see us?"

It was uncanny. Every year, once, the same thing would happen. ???

Barefoot all over, all over.

The town in which I grew up did not have swimming pools in the schools.   However the YMCA had a pool and parents took or sent us there to learn swimming.   The  YMCA pool was always nude.  The YMCA pool was down in its basement and they did not even have locker room for women/girls in those years.  It was not a place for girls and women.  We also had never heard about homosexuals either in those years.  We also swam naked in the lake at YMCA summer camp.

I guess this could be related to the clothing thread also. Even though we lived in the country a neighboring father would drive to town once in awhile and drop us guys off at the "Y" for the afternoon. Although we were dressed for basketball and other sports swimming was done nude. I still remember the sign that said "No Bathing Suits. Lint Clogs the Filters". It was no problem as the other guys and myself would skinny dip at home anyways. And the memory of the "prissy city kid" who refused to swim naked. Flash forward to now and I can't believe what I see at the pools and beaches! It seems that the material that has been lost in women's suits had been added three fold onto men's board shorts! And we think women have body issues!

Much like Bob describes it was not a place for women. Nor do I remember anything about homosexuals or child molesters either. So free and innocent. In fact the only warnings that my father gave me were to avoid cigarettes and dope!

I've got`a book at home describing Scouting between the wars. One group of kids go to the local District Commissioner who has an unheated pool for a swimming test. On arrival they are told to strip off - were're all men together here. They all jump in bar one who is pushed in by the said commissioner with a comment of get on with it boy. Our anti-hero boy gets out as quick as he can grabs his clothes and is never seen again. Try that sort of behaviour now and see what happens!

Times change - perhaps at times for the better

I taught school a few years back. I had to substitute teach for P.E. teachers a few times. There are now showers with separate stalls about chest high. The kids don't use them. No one would be the first, for fear of being the only one, and they want to get out and about. I remember locker room problems, pranks and intimidation in my high school years. I remember everyone took a shower mandatory, in a large multi shower-head room. A boy, or coach would hand out the towels as we exited to our lockers.

The result is a bunch of kids acting in uncomfortable inhibited manners changing clothes. It is so weird and unhealthy to me. They place both sexes in the same class with separate locker rooms. I remember my first junior high locker room experiences after returning from Europe where there was no P.E. in my school. I felt uncomfortable at first. The guys who hadn't developed pubes were uncomfortable, but no one actually said anything, understood, and didn't really care, as these kids hid in their shame.

We were taught that nudity was okay among men.  Even better, we could have been taught that nudity was okay among both sexes, just as easily.

Kids don't want to sit in desks, do homework, or even go to school, generally. The new and uncomfortable have to be gone through to learn. Why is there a perceived trauma in the locker room and swimming pool? It is considered some form of rape to require kids to healthily shower after a workout. It is sick that the system imposes body shame issues on kids.

I do remember the coach using shame on the boys. "You're acting like a bunch of Girls. Act like men." I must note in his defense that he said "girls." He didn't say women.

I remember those locker room pranks also. Never had a problem myself but I did mature early. The change came when those who were ridiculed became the school administrators. Yes Jbee, it would have been a small step from teaching nudity was okay between men to it being okay among both sexes. Instead we have taken steps backward and let schools foster a body shame issue instead of any kind of positive attitude.

It seems a bigger issue for women than men. We use a leisure centre for our naturist swim. Clearly it matters not who changes in which changing rooms although the women tend to use one side as en-route to the showers are the men's urinals so fair enough. What is of interest is both changing rooms are open plan but in the men's side the showers are also open plan but the women have cubicals.

Last year a number of us visited the Olympic Pool in London including about 20 kids and half a dozen adults. We entered the "changing village" which is unisex. Without one exception - me, everyone headed for a cubical. I went to a group/family changing area. I had it to myself with its own showers so getting changed and showing naked was not a problem.

It's a fantastic pool and wow 50 metres each length is one long way between turns.... but it was good value at £2.00

I read posts on another site about kids and nudity at school, i.e. PE classes. Attitudes are different today than when I was in HS. Considering this in conjunction with some recent news about students that share nude photos. The discussion feels schizophrenic.

I'll find that and post it here.

There's a lot of social experimentation in high schools. That's what it is for. You know these things are going on, but you just can't know how much, or how often.

There used to be anonymous questionnaires when I was in school about drug use. These were compiled nationally. This could use some of the same treatment. Then again, when a friend of mine took out the yearbook and counted the ones that we knew were smoking pot, the numbers from the questionnaires were much smaller than the facts.

It seems to me, that which takes place in cyberspace is off campus.

As I just said in the thread where sexting was being talked about--the less familiar we become with each other's nudity in a non-sexual context, the more powerful the thrill becomes when the taboo is broken. If everyone were more used to seeing naked people, nudity wouldn't have much impact as pornography. So, not really schizophrenic at all.

I heard this from the kids' side once. I was up at the Cunningham family's place in Vermont (Jim Cunningham was a famous/notorious naturist group leader) and although the kids had been home-schooled, Jim and Linda finally relented and let them go to the local high school. So I asked Kate, the oldest child, what her impressions were, and she said, "It's kind of strange. The kids are fooling around sexually all the time, but go in to the locker room and you see all the girls desperately trying to stay covered up."

I learnt to swim at the outdoor baths in Rhyl 110 yards long = 100metres. 50 is quite enough at one go thank you

The more sex the more they want to hide themselves.     Is there a connection?    I think there is a subconscious/unconscious connection.    Back when sex was out of the picture, (at least not openly mentioned)   and before private washrooms as well.  Nudity was a casual everyday thing among same sex associates, and within families for the most part.

There has always been a separation of the genders in changing rooms, I guess because of the sexual angle. I wonder if hiding away is more common now because of the increase in same sex relationships. Perhaps people will think they are in a sexual or potentially sexual situation by being naked in front of anyone.

Just a thought
