Naturist Ramblers club
« on: March 27, 2016, 11:52:57 AM »
Since around 1993, members of the Singles Outdoor Club (SOC for short) have organised naturist hikes in the countryside of Southern and South East England.

Latest news is that the walking group has recently separated from the SOC and is now setting up as an independent club. Provisional club name is Naturist Ramblers. This should be a seamless change and the programme of walks for 2016 will go ahead unchanged. For more details, please go to the new website www.justwearasmile.co.uk/natram/

Looking forward to meeting some of the FRN forum members on our hikes this summer!

I hope there is some good logic in this as on the face of things it rather sounds like a pointless schism.
Will the new group be affiliating to BN? It would probably be a good idea in spite of the cost.

I'd be interested i joining one of these walks but they are all "out of area" for me. I'm sounding a bit of a killjoy here and whilst I think a naked ramblers group is a great idea and I seriously wish any naturist rambling group well but I was a little concerned to read the declaration form, especially the last part of the last sentence,

"I agree to save harmless and keep indemnified the Naturist Ramblers, its Committee and such persons as may be authorised by Naturist Ramblers to organise this walk against all actions, costs, claims, expenses and demands in respect to death or injury to myself however caused arising out of or in connection with this walk, and notwithstanding that the same may have been contributed to or occasioned by the negligence of the said bodies or their agents.

I understand forms of indemnity but I'm not sure you can get people to sign away their rights to this extent.

I have a brother in law that would point out that there is a lawyer in the group. America is bombarded with TV ads of law firms looking for clients that may have grounds for a lawsuit. I understand a disclaimer but this seems over the top.

I don't feel it's unreasonable to make sure that as an ad hoc group of people, each self responsible, that the organisers don't take on any responsibility for what happens on walks.  Would you say the organisers have a duty of care to the participants?  I think if they were profiting from the membership and walks by charging fees, they possibly should assume this responsibility - like a tour company would.  But as an informal membership-of-equals organisation, surely they should be indemnified from such responsibility?  A 'clause' like this makes it possible to clarify to each participant that there is no come-back on the organisers.

Coincidentally I've just been dealing with the concept of whether the members and committee of a membership organisation are liable for the actions of the organisation and its members and, sadly for the Naturist Ramblers, the law indicates they probably are.  In the case I've been involved in, forming a CIC or an company limited by guarantee limits liability of individual directors and members to their share value (£1) usually.

I've had enough to do with lawyers over the years to be pretty sure that that if an accident or something happens on a walk, and a walker wants to pursue another of the party for damages of some sort, then there will exist a lawyer who will be willing to 'have a go' and if that happens it will result in horrible, costly litigation, likely to be even more damaging than the original hurt!

I too am out of region for this group but I wish them every success in having extended nude walks.  Am I to understand that the SOC still exists?  Was there a reason why the new group broke away?  No politics or differences of opinion I hope.

Thanks for your comments, JohnGW.  Please be assured that the decision to separate the walkers group from SOC has only been reached after careful debate between the walk leaders.  We now have a group run by walkers for walkers.

"On your other question, we will almost certainly be seeking affiliation as a BN member club, but this is a process that will necessarily take a little time.

"JohnGW and Davie:  I understand that the legal disclaimer wording on the proposed declaration form has been adopted directly from the equivalent SOC form, and that this has not given rise to any objections in the past.  As any walker new to the group starts off as essentially a member of the general public, the group, which is run by volunteers, needs a certain amount of protection from potentially vexatious claims.

Thanks to Nuduke for putting another perspective on the disclaimer thing.

Could I now request no further postings on the above issues, though I would be happy to provide clarifications on other related topics.  Also I don't think it would be constructive to air a discussion on the whys and wherefors of the SOC / Naturist Ramblers demerger on this forum.

I'd think that the drive, even an overnight would be worth the fun of such hikes. If I'm ever in that neck of the woods....

I'd think about finding some other activities around the trip to and back. A three or four hour drive makes for a mini-vacation and there is apparently much to see around there and must be in-between. I'd be looking for a place to camp along these happy trails. The pics and description looks to be great fun. The sea is nearby.

The United Kingdom is somewhere in-between the size of Oregon and Arizona.

jbee  thanks for your post.  You would be welcome to join us!  We do have a few regular walkers who travel quite a distance for the walks.  Some of them travel for several hours to meet us for the day.  If you decide to use the train, which can be a good option for a longer journey, we can arrange to meet you at a station near the walk and give you a lift to the starting point.  This is free of charge and less hassle than the taxi option!  If you wanted to do this, you would need to contact the walk leader a day or two before the walk to agree which train you'd be arriving on.

Hi John,

I am hoping to make the walk on Saturday 7 May near Salisbury, sadly work makes the first walk impossible for me. If you are on the walk, please come over and introduce yourself, there are enough pictures of me here to make me easy to spot (or drop me a PM in advance so I know who to look out for).

Have fun,

Ian.

Thanks Ian.  The Salisbury walks are a bit of a journey for me, though I am hoping to try one this year.  Look forward to meeting you on one of the walks anyway.  All the Best!  John

The only contact I had with the SOC was their walks program, and it always seemed a little much to ask for a subscription fee of £20 just to walk. One wondered what the money went for, but anyway that's all in the past now. The new organization only wants £5, and that's fine.

Now that I'm a UK resident for a while, I'm definitely planning to go on the Leith Hill walk on the 28th. It's a chance to join the very first Naturist Ramblers event, so how can I resist! I'm not so crazy about the Salisbury walk on May 7, as that's a much longer journey, but if there are people from this group going, I'll make the effort. On either of these Naturist Ramblers walks, is there anyone planning to drive there who'd be able to take a passenger from Putney, southwest London, or from somewhere reachable from there?

John,

If you can get to Slough / Maidenhead / Reading we can probably work something out. Drop me a PM or email me ( milfmog [at] yahoo.co.uk ) if no better, easier or more convenient offers appear.

Have fun,

Ian.

OK, tomorrow is the first Naturist Ramblers walk! The weather forecast is so-so, no rain until evening and maybe some sunshine, but breezy and cool. I doubt if much skin will be on view, but it'll be enjoyable to meet the people, anyway.

And I forgot to log in to tell you that I would be there!!!
Sorry about that, but I'm glad we made contact. :)

It's surprising how much skin was in view amongst the twenty odd ramblers, even if you and I prefered not to shiver!

Great fun and I'm hoping to make the next one, when Ian should be with us too. :D
