As I was glancing through this website, I noticed so many pearls of wisdom and experience. There is a new wealth of information here, catching up with the old TSNS site. A valuable treasure, you contributors.

Now, Nuduke, isn't volley ball one of the most popular forms of entertainment in any landed nudist club or resort? Surely, you jest?...oh, you do...No one actually ever got knocked out by their own boobs as far as I know. Such people probably don't jump as high however. I've seen some very rosy breast when they got in the way and got spanked by the ball.

Water volleyball is great, too. Much less sand between the legs. Enthusiastic volleyball heros land much easier, too.

I agree, Jbee.

Nuduke, on another site I frequent, discussions about nude beaches reflect that naked volleyball seems to be the sport of choice on said beaches.

Maybe it's another one of those US - UK things. :D

Good grief, a (nearly) serious discussion about being contused by the whiplash action of bared breasts in energetic exercise!
I was joking, guys.  Surely you remember that thing that pops up every now and again what's it called....can't quite think....ermmm...oh yes!! - humour.

An example of a downside to conversing on an internet forum and a good excuse for arranging a personal meeting to avoid said downsides. All the accompanying idiosyncrasies of a face-to-face meeting are missing in the barren landscape of a virtual break room.

No facial expression, no voice inflection or hand gestures, grand or offensive, can be effectively transmitted. I suppose emoticons help, but they just "don't cut the mustard"*. Like dubbing a voiceover on a foreign language film, you lose the timbre, pacing, accent and all the other attributes a skilled actor would bring to the stage/screen. You can keep those by using subtitles, but that can be distracting.

Our stage may be small and virtual and it proves a respite from the circus on the nightly news, er. . . sorry, entertainment.

I knew you were poking fun, John, but on the other discussion I read, which was somewhat serious. The talk went back and forth about whether watching a gaggle of nude volleyballers trying to stay focused on the game seems, in some quarters, to be a questionable form of "appropriate", there's that word again, nude behavior.

Go figure!

* As soon as I typed that I wondered, "Where in blazes" (ooh, there's another!), did that phrase come from.

Here we go!  Off topic time..
I don't believe the crust on the mustard story for a moment!
Try:  https://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,5753,-2242,00.html
In http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/cut-the-mustard.html , the one you cited, Duane, I prefer the explanation of
Quote
There has been an association between the heat and piquancy of mustard and the zest and energy of people's behaviour. This dates back to at least 1672, when the term 'as keen as mustard' is first recorded. 'Up to mustard' or just 'mustard' means up to standard in the same way as 'up to snuff'. 'Cutting' has also long been used to mean 'exhibiting', as in the phrase 'cutting a fine figure'. Unless some actual evidence is found for the other proposed explanations, the derivation of 'cutting the mustard' as an alternative way of saying 'exhibiting one's high standards' is by far the most likely.
I am attracted by those explanations that allude to the dilution of mustard to attenuate the flavour and thus cut it.  Whilst the explanation of 'cutting' or absenting from the muster' of troops has a feeling of plausibility, the pretty accurate dating of the phrase to the late 19th century leads one to think if that were the true derivation, sources would be foundd that were a lot older.

I think the Oxford Dictionary sums it up nicely:
Quote
Like so many of our most intriguing phrases, the precise origin of ‘cutting’ the mustard has been lost over time, but for something that began as American slang the phrase now seems as quintessentially British as ‘stiff upper lip’ (also, surprisingly, American in origin).

Thanks for the stimulus, Duane, to have a bit of philological playtime and add bit of intellectual sticking plaster on what has, for me, been a day scratched by the little thorns of existence and slightly bruised by a few of life's low boughs across the straight and narrow path!

When I was a kid growing up with father, an officer in the military, it was cut the muster...as I vaguely remember, but that has been the way that I have always remembered the phrase, as muster, not mustard. With all of this evidence over centuries and bridging two continents... or more and speculation, I suspect that it is no core root, by this time, it could be multiples of origins and it changed from culture to culture, time to time, a root with many branches, etc. Interesting divergence from the topic though.

The topic has long been lost. I'll have to look it up!

Oh! I started this as "urban naturism." We gathered robes yesterday at DF's in town, as the landlords handyman was on the roof next door. He knocked on our door first. I don't know why. He just knocked and left. He didn't ask us anything when we conversed later. He's a friend that I have hiked clothed with.

Saturday, I cleaned off the table outside for brunch omelets. DF was doing laundry and the lines drape across the area from porch roof to fence. We sat nude in-between the hanging sheets, sun, privacy, no wind, and quite colorful having the egg concoction and some fun tea.

There now, urban naturism.

You're welcome.  :D I thought you might enjoy that!
I like the "cutting" reference to the flavor, better also.

The dictionary and newspaper links are safer! Every time I find a site like the "Phrase Finder" I always notice, after chasing every rabbit, that I've spent far too much time on the hunt for every variation.

Your property is hardly urban, Jbee!  More heremetic.
Is DF's house in town?

DF is very much urban. There are some pics at TheFreeRangeNaturist.org website showing parts and how we adapt in our urban environment.
