Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice this year is Monday, June 20th.  Anyone in the Southwest (Arizona) interested in a freehike with Amy and I that day?

I will be at a clothing optional pagan camping event in southern Illinois on Solstice this year.  Then in Albuquerque, NM, by the first of July.

The beginning of the dying of the light comes so soon every year!
This year I'm enjoying good weather where I can and will continue to do so.
It's a Tuesday.  I've noted it in my diary and if weather ok will try and get out to give thanks for the summer to come and wistfully anticipate the slow inexorable path into winter.

That's 2 weeks out.

We're in a heat spell at the moment. I'm hoping for the weather to cool off.

Today at 9:30 AM it was 100º. At minimum I have to be at my hikes by 5:00-5:30 am and be done by 9:30-10:00.

It's just not fun to be out in 105º+ temps. It's not smart either.

I'm getting my schedule finalized.   I will be in "kurkey" (Albuquerque) by June 28 with nothing much planned until July 1.  I booked night in Oklahoma City because it was about half way between Nashville, Tennessee and kurkue on I-40.  Just yesterday I was looking up mileage from Oklahoma City to OLT thinking about diverting for a couple of days.  Google maps says its 630 miles and 10 hours.  A few hours out of my way and I might arrive at OLT by late afternoon on the 28th.   Maybe we can work this out there or in querque.

Bob, I think that we should take this to PM. It would be a great thing to take a soak together. At PM, I'll also be asking you about the area north of Kurque. It is a long drive from Tucson to OLT. I'm figuring that we would take a day to drive, and then cruise into OLT in the morning, taking advantage of a full day. That plan requires a place to stay on that previous afternoon. Can you recommend a good place for a potential campsite, maybe one of those Easy Rider-like remote hotsprings. It is 3 1/2 hours from Kurque to OLT. Somewhere in between? We won't have the 4x4, just the good on gas rice rocket.

Kurkey you all ask? I'm a WSMR kid. I once lived in New Mexico. My brother graduated from New Mexico State in Cruces (Las Cruces). I still nauseate people when I sing the New Mexico State Anthem whenever I cross the border into NM, which I had to learn in school there. Albuquerque has been a slang term used by residents of that state for the over 58 years that I have on occasion heard it.

"Oh fair New Mexico,
We love, we love you so,
Our hearts w/ pride overflow,
No matter where we go...."

Anyone else care to meet up at the Orient Land Trust, soak in the mineral springs, sweat in the sauna and hike naked without limits, with a Colorado Rocky Mountain hi? Last weekend in June before the July 4th weekend crowds and after the solstice. Three weekends hence.

Okay, maybe the first report of WNHD.
The full moon was at its transit, the air had cooled down from its record high. It is just too hot to hike tomorrow day, so tonight we hike in the moonlight.
We left and immediately noticed the temperature was still hot! It had been been somewhere around 117F during the day. We had taken refuge in the swimming pool at the sweat. Sitting for 15 to 30 minutes in 160F humid actually makes one think that 117F is okay for a couple of minutes. Staying in a swimming pool into wrinkled skin is the solution to tolerate this misalignment.
We took off around 11:00pm. It had been still 100F at 9:00pm according to the weather service. It was hot obviously in the high 90F. It is usually closer to 100F for a high and by 8:00pm the temp sinks to 80F. The same number of degrees had dropped off ,but it was still hot. I was dripping perspiration on the trail!
We took off through the neighborhood happily nude. This is a bit rural with generally 4 acre lots. We had seven homes to pass before leaving the neighborhood and the slope uphill into the Tortolita Mountains. It is a Sunday night and late. There is likely that no one will be encountered along the way. We had decided to visit a familiar triple crested saguaro and watch the city lights glitter from a vantage point. It was where we had spent Valentine’s Day a couple of years before. There is a report on: https://thefreerangenaturist.org/2016/02/

We attempted photos of the crested in the dark and then, moseyed on up to the top of the hill. We stood there admiring the view of the multitudes of city lights across the valley below. A hoot owl and coyotes were heard from our perch. When midnight hit, it was time to go home. We encountered a small deer and a cottontail bunny on the way.

There ya go. We participated as best that we could for WNHD 2016. This will probably be the first report on a couple of sites. The low will be 80F tonight. It will begin to warm as the sun rises at 5:00am. That means that it will be hot tomorrow morning, early. This is the best that we could do. Next week, we will be doing a nude hike 5 days straight.

Ended up not going out. Too hot! 112 Sunday and hotter today.

I pitched the idea of an early morning, 4:00 am, desert hike to my wife. She was less than enthused. Didn't like the idea. It's one thing to run into trouble when the temperatures are reasonable, it's another when it's 89-90 at 5:00 am. Her response was, "If anything were to happen, you would be toast, literally, by the time we find you".

Ahh, well. I deferred to her sense of caution, though I doubt anything would have happened.
It is a long way drive out there though. Maybe next year. There will be other opportunities for a full moon hike.

“It was super hot Monday June 2, 2016, but I still spent the morning on my land, helping with a perk test, and working on the trails below.  I was able to take a short freehike to the bottom of the hill, and spent some time rocking the trails – naked of course.  So even with the excessive heat, I enjoyed World Naked Hiking Day.  That night, Amy and I participated in a drum circle at church (unfortunately clothed).” – Ken

We celebrated and had a romantic cuddly sky gazing afterwards.
