The car key problem
« on: June 08, 2016, 12:50:13 PM »
I've now got a picture of my dog collar as a wrist band solution to the car key problem.
It works for me and is good for swimming provided you aren't using an electronic car key.  ;) :'(

Yes indeed John, that is a problem that many of us share.    Yours is a clever solution John.    It brings back memories of my childhood spent every Saturday morning in the New Haven (Connecticut) YMCA swimming pool, back in the day, naked of course.   My dad would take me there religiously as a young child so that I could improve both my swimming and social skills.    When we signed into the locker room, we  would each be issued a locker key for the day which had an elastic ring attached for the purpose of wearing the key as we went about our workout.    So the pool was soon  populated with many naked enthusiast bodies, all sporting red colored bands with keys attached around their biceps.

More recently, but still long ago when I started wild swimming and kayaking in out of the way places,  I adopted the habit of hiding my car key in some crevice in the external bodywork of my car.    There are numerous obscure places on my car that work well.    I haven't lost my car yet to this practice over several decades, and more importantly I have not lost my car keys at the bottom of a swirl hole in some class three rapids.

freewalkerma - your post about pool locker wristbands reminds me of the first time the Swansea naturist swim moved to a new venue.
One of our number locked his clothes locker and then found that the locker keys no longer had wristbands but were fitted with safety pins. He was teased about it for the rest of the session.

The public pool where I grew up didn't have lockers but numbered baskets that you placed your clothes in and "checked" them at the front desk. You took the safety pin, similar to these, which we clipped on the inside of the waist band of our swim trunks.

When we left, we turned in the pin to get the basket with our clothes, and off we went. I don't believe I ever lost a pin.

When I was a kid the local city pool had a similar pin number and basket system.  We all wore suits.  The pool was later closed for being unsanitary.  We went there a couple of days a week all summer when I was about 10 or 12.

Where I grew up the old guys would put their key on top of the rear tire.  It was out of sight because the fender came lower and hid it.  You had to know it was there and reach up under the sheet metal.  I guess it was sort of like leaving the key on the visor, but you could lock the door.  If someone wanted to steal your car they might know the hiding spot and look there, but usually not.

My key and electronic module are too large to want hanging on my wrist.  Its just easier to hide it either on top of the tire or behind the tire.

I nearly always take my camera. The key goes to the very bottom of the camera bag.
I take water, if not. The ol' behind the tire trick is a backup.
When I take off from home, I just go at a whim. Maybe I'll go back for my fivetoes. For a longer hike through the neighborhood and out into the desert, I have to wear some kind of cover. For Havarock, well it's just a walk, maybe a half mile out and a half back.

I would never leave my keys behind. They go in my pack and stay there till I get back to the car.

Dan Freewalkerma up above told me that my technique of leaving the key on one of the tyres wasn't secure enough: "Everyone knows about that". I'm gonna show him. One of these days we'll go on a trip together and when he's not looking, I'll take his keys from that nook he uses and put them somewhere else. Ha ha ha I will go.

ive usually got some sort of camera bag along so the keys go in there, along with the wallet and phone.
theres no way id leave keys where some animal could run off with them.

That works for me when I am carrying a pack.   Not so much if I'm going out for a couple hours without anything.

What else are friends for?
Never pass up an opportunity to educate and show them how much we care for their welfare don't want anything bad to happen to them.

Which gives us the chance to give them some good-natured ribbing, enjoy their company and having a good laugh.

Such is the nature of the gift of friendship!

I'm still having trouble wrapping my mind around that. Packrats love bright shinning objects, would they then be my friends?!? ???
