New from New England
« on: October 08, 2016, 12:24:00 AM »
Hello to all.  Happy to have found the site.  Not many places around here so I keep searching for those "free range" opportunities.  It's definitely the way to go, but what am I doing, preaching to the choir.  Inside our the condo is no problem but it's tough getting outside.

There is a contingent that gets together in the New England region. I'd bet that they will help you expand your range. Where are you close to?

Yes Nenude, happy to be seeing your intro. We do indeed have a New England-based hiking group, with members from several states, but none yet from Maine or Rhode Island. If you can fill one of those gaps, we'd especially like to meet you! Actually we've never resolved the issue of whether we're a real organization or just a group of friends, but we seem to get along as we are. There's been talk of setting up a website, and some day it may happen. Most of our activities take place in beautiful nude-friendly Vermont, but we've done some things in Massachusetts and New Hampshire too.

You others who've joined and never posted anything, how about saying a few words?

Central Mass., but I actually grew up in Vermont.  Looking forward to hearing about, and hopefully, being able to join in some closer to home free range activities!  I hike, I bike, I ski, kayak and snowshoe ....

OK, check out the thread "Somerset Reservoir west side" under Free Range Naturism/ Trip Reports. One of the two Dans there is a neighbor of yours from Worcester MA, and the other one is from the south suburbs of Boston, and I'm just north of Boston.

We go kayaking/canoeing:

And snowshoeing, too:

and visiting swimmin' holes!

We're a friendly group. There's always room for someone new.

Thanks John, appreciate the information.  What are the laws in Vt. relative to nudity? Massachusetts? I see some of the pictures are at or very near trailheads.  I am new at this so am concerned about that aspect.  Is your group somewhat formal or how does one get notification of your hikes, etc?

You must have left Vermont before you needed to know about the law relating to nudity there! It's pretty much the happy hunting ground for naturists, because there is no state-wide law against non-sexual nudity, only a few town bylaws. If you want some proof, read this:
http://www.mychamplainvalley.com/news/police-chief-others-react-to-naked-man-in-downtown-burlington

Ask the police chief: "When I first came to Vermont I was informed early on nudity for the most part, is not a crime," stated Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo.

Massachusetts isn't so favorable. The law is an old-fashioned one that simply says what the penalty is for "persons guilty of indecent exposure". It doesn't define "indecent" or "exposure", and in some states where they have laws against "lewd conduct" etc, the courts have held that non-sexual nudity isn't included (as in Florida and California). But as far as I'm aware, there's never been a case in Massachusetts where anyone we'd call a naturist was prosecuted for nudity. We're a liberal state, and a person might get away with it, but then again maybe not.

We are a long way from "somewhat formal"! We did try setting up a group on Yahoo so we wouldn't be constantly emailing each other using the "reply all" option, but nobody ended up using it. As I said, we've talked about a website, but so far it hasn't happened. When we're planning a trip that we'd be willing to share, we put messages (maybe) on some Facebook groups plus (maybe) here and that's about the limit of it.

Here's the law, as described by someone with a sense of humor:
http://www.mattcameronlaw.com/2008/12/an-idle-and-disorderly-statute-part-i/
"Common railers and brawlers" were fun to think about, but they actually got removed recently. Good thing too: there are one or two people on this forum who might have been in trouble if they ever came to Massachusetts.

Thanks John.  And so I will continue, at least here at home, to be careful and watchful.  Then again, when I go home to Vermont, well I guess I would say, "all bets [and clothing] are off!"  Best Wishes.

Welcome nenude.

You're lucky to have found an active group nearby.
I've had the same good fortune here in Nevada.

I am thinking, JohnP, that the link to that story is the same guy in the story you posted here.
It looks like the same downtown area.

A much more relaxed place than out here.

Yes Duane, same incident but a different news report. Even though it's Vermont, nude strollers aren't seen in the major towns all that often!

So reading the Champlain Valley piece, you can BE naked but you can't GET naked, you can be naked in the street but not in the park, and the question posed by the shopkeeper remains unanswered, can you be naked in a shop?

A matter of semantics perhaps?  Maybe one can not be seen "getting naked." e.g. removing textiles.  That would be an offense. But, given that no one actually observed the action of "getting naked" and only observed "nakedness," that would be fine?

Not exactly why the "street" and the "park" would be treated differently. As to being naked in the shop, maybe that is complicated by being in or on someone's property that is not yours or not in the "public" domain.  ??  Interesting.

JohnP - you wrote: Most of our activities take place in beautiful nude-friendly Vermont.  Perhaps without being too specific, unless it doesn't matter, can you tell me where are some of those "nude-friendly" spots?  Thanks.

nenude, if you search Vermont in the box above it will bring up some of the hikes. While some of them are lengthy, you could do part of them. The hike mentioned under the summer solstice, can be done into the pond from the parking lot. That is a two mile hike from the lot to the pond.

Excellent Nudeed. Familiar with Catamount trail from years ago, but not Free Range.  Will have to try it.  Thanks.
