Naked European Walking Tour
« on: January 25, 2017, 05:16:06 PM »
In another thread, I mentioned that I signed up for this year's Naked European Walking Tour, and there was an immediate request for a trip report(!!) In fact it's the second time I'll have done NEWT: I was on the 2014 trip, and that time there was a documentary filmmaker, Conxita Fornieles (she is Spanish but lives in Scotland) in the party, who was making a movie as we went along. After exhibiting her film at various festivals, Conxi has now made it available via Vimeo; see the URL below. I'm in a few background shots, though I wasn't one of the people that she interviewed, but I think you'll agree that between the three people who do get to speak, you get an excellent impression of what naturism is about. The one problem is that if anyone has the idea that we're a tanned and shameless bunch of senior citizens, the film won't contradict it!

The movie runs about 18 minutes. Get a cup of coffee.

It really was like this. No faking.

What a wonderful wake up this morning! i know it's past noon EST but trying to sleep last night was another story. Also the age range was impressive so there is hope for me yet. Thanks John P  and agree you'll need to post an epic trip report!

I watched the NEWT video.  I was so impressed towards the end by the lady sitting on a bench (with her husband) and talking about body and age acceptance.  She was a star and a great advert for Naturism and why it doesn't actually matter a jot if you choose to be naked or clothed.

That was Penny, lovely lady. If you wonder about her accent, she started out in Minneapolis and then took a job as a schoolteacher on an American airbase in England, and decided to stay. I'm not sure if being with Chris was the reason for that.

For an outside view of that interview, see here:

JohnP, watched the video and noticed that the passersby had little reaction to the hikers although there wasn't a good view of their faces. What was the general reaction by the clothed hikers?

Listening to Penny, was a perfect example of a promotional definition for naked hiking. What a great way to spend an afternoon. Sitting naked on a bench after a hike and enjoying the day without having to be worried about anyone's reaction.

Conxita was making a film on the NEWT in 2013 when we were on it but I never got to see it.

Was that the one that I saw on the internet, a year or more ago? There were Karla and Stuart speaking and moving, instead of frozen. I probably saw it through the Nacktiv website, or reference.

Anyone help us out on the location of that one?

Karla, is that the same one where you made it into a book about naked hiking, where the author commented on your failure to even notice the cold temperature?

I believe you posted here about it.

Jbee,

I hadn't put a link there, but I found it here on FRN and added it, Guess who he's referring to?

I wasn't sure that was the same NEWT Karla was talking about. It's the right year though.
Don't know if she was in any of the photos.

It also wasn't a book but an article. It's been almost 2 yrs. since she posted that, a few memory cells have retired since then.

My memory is that on the 2014 NEWT, Conxi Fornieles said she had been there the previous year, but the film she took then didn't satisfy her, and she came back with better equipment and more of a plan. She also brought a friend, another Spanish woman named Nelisa, to help her carry the gear and sometimes to act as camerawoman under Conxi's direction. You can see them both in the picture of the interview with Penny and Chris. Also on the trip in 2013, there was evidently the writer Mark Haskell Smith, who later came out with the book Naked at Lunch. NEWT2013 was one of his major sections, and he was very complimentary about Richard Foley and his attitude toward naturism.

I strolled into my favorite local library one day a year or so ago and casually looked along the shelf of new books, and there prominently displayed was Naked at Lunch. Well, I thought, this was obviously meant for me, so I checked it out and read it. It's a very interesting book, about how Mark Haskell Smith made a world tour around various nudist enterprises, from the "free range" to the "factory farmed". As I said, he could recognize places where someone was successfully putting naturism into practice, but he was also skeptical about some of the things he encountered. It's definitely worth reading if you can find a copy.

In response to Duane: in almost every case, other people we met on the trails were completely calm about nude hikers; some would make little jokes, or they'd just say hello in German or English, and walk on. That was true even if there were children present. But I do recall a couple of incidents where people were obviously uncomfortable. Even if they didn't make any negative comments, you could see them stiffen up and walk by with their gaze firmly set on some distant point. So it seems that even in German-speaking countries, there is some way to go to reach acceptance. Rich Foley's rule was "Stay covered up when you're on paved roads", and that seemed to be enough to keep us out of trouble.

When I went to Prescott and Dewey and went naked hiking with 4 people I had never seen before in my life, it was a wonderful new experience. They were all avowed naturists so it wasn't like I was around others that weren't naturists.

I can imagine that walking out on a trail where there is a high probability of meeting non nudists or naturists would be invigorating. Like showing someone you have never met a favorite past-time that you are very enthusiastic about.

NEWT is a long distance and time away. Maybe someday. I don't think there is an equivalent here in the states.

Mark Haskell's book, "Naked at Lunch" is filled with humor and wit, I might add. It is definitely a fun, entertaining and informative. DF began to read my copy. When we met him out at De Anza, DF got two more copies. One, because she enjoyed it and two, she thought that it is a great introduction to naturists beliefs. She intends to distribute the book to non-naturists friends and maybe family. After reading it, any open mind would say, "Nothin' wrong with that," Or "Might give it a try myself."

It is heartening to hear that it is on a library shelf.

John P.:
I've noticed at Redington Pass, the only place I feel comfortable legally to meet people on the trail that encounters with about 20% categorize. They are the ones that have never encountered a casually nude person. They do keep eyes directed away. They often stiffen up, but these are people who have seen the signs and can expect a nude person. Naked is privacy to them, like walking into a room surprising someone changing, they are conditioned to avert their eyes, politely.

They also may not have a clue how to react in the strange, to them, situation. They are uncomfortable, but generally accepting. There is a subtle difference between accepting and tolerant in expression. The subtle and not so subtle, inflections of anger are not found. They don't come across that they don't like the situation; they just don't know how to behave in the unusual territory.

When I'm nude among textiles, it can be uncomfortable, or liberating, for all parties, I have noticed. That reaction is just social behavior. People adjust as they become more familiar with the others in a group. They learn boundaries and context, and adapt to it. They do this always with clothing on. The clothing optional dynamic is just another setting. Remember the old Candid Camera movie, "What do You Say to a Naked Lady?"

Is that what you are saying that you encountered in the Alps? Was it anger, or just the discomfort of confusion?

Yeah that was the same NEWT. We've only been on one so far. We do intend to go again when we can. Conxita was there being introduced to naturism and it was interesting to see how she grew comfortable being naked in open spaces.

Karla & John, did either of you ask her if she is doing this annually? Or is she just periodically seeing what the state is on the naked/naturist community front?

Sort of like a documentary.
