Why a Naturist

Naturism’s 3-H’s

By Ken Sunwalker

One bright, sunny day in the forest, Goldilocks met the three bears, and asked “why are you bare”?
Good question!

How would you answer Goldilocks?  Why are you a bare naturist?

Not an easy question to answer, especially if you try to remember and discuss all of 205 arguments for naturism.  That’s just too complex and detailed.

The solution is to “Keep It Simple”.  The 3-H approach makes it easy for me to remember and answer this SIMPLE question
What are the three H’s?  - Happy, Healthy, and Human.

Happy

For me, this is the most important answer to why I am a naturist.

The sun and breeze caressing my entire body makes me realize exactly how much I miss by covering the majority of my skin – the largest sense organ.  I can avoid the burden of uncomfortable, ill-fitting of clothes that shut out the world.  The naked FEELING is amazing!

Nude is FUN!  Remember skinny-dipping?  Playing naked is like being a carefree child again.  No wonder it’s such a challenge keeping clothes on young children.

When I’m nude I forget my every-day cares.  And I am not so influenced by other’s opinions and cultures and fashions.  I am FREE to be me!

And because naturism Feels good, is Fun, and sets me Free, it makes me HAPPY.  It’s that simple.

Since I have a choice, why not feel Happy, fun, and free, rather than scared, serious, and sad?

Healthy

Here’s another important answer about why I am a naturist:

Naked keeps my mind SHARP!  Exhibitionism, voyeurism, inappropriate sexual behavior, pornography and the like simply disappear in the light of naked reality.  And skimpy clothing just adds to these issues.  Naked, my mind can focus on spirituality and creativity and truth.

Naturism makes me STRONG.  Naked in the sunlight, my body soaks in lots of healthy vitamin D.  Seasonal Affective Disorder disappears.  My love of nature and the outdoors grows.  I’m motivated to be active, so healthy exercise occurs naturally.

And these healthy benefits reduce everyday STRESS.  Why worry?  Many people believe that going naked causes stress; instead it helps me get rid of it.  Naturism brings calmness, complete relaxation, and comfort.  Nothing restricts or confines me.  Inhibitions and shame disappear.  Naked meditation and yoga fit well here.  I am less self-conscious.  My naked life is great!

So naturism helps me be HEALTHY - Sharp, Strong, and Stress-free.

Since I have a choice, why not be mentally and physically Healthy, and stress-free, rather than slow, sick, and worried?

Human

Finally, naturism helps me be Human, with a realistic body image, positive social interaction, and openness to honest reality and truth.

I am now realistic about BODY IMAGE.  Seeing other’s bodies confirms that no one is perfect, so I quickly discard comparisons and negative thoughts, along with unhealthy eating habits and weight disorders.  I am less judgmental.  I see everyone’s body as beautiful – flaws, scars, weight (or lack thereof) don’t matter to me anymore.

I enjoy being SOCIABLE.  I find it so easy to make new naturist acquaintances and friends; just spend a little time talking in the pool or hot tub.  This is not a sexual closeness, but a feeling about shared beliefs and attitudes and activities.  My very closest, most trusted friends are naturists.

I am OPEN.  As a naturist I am honest with myself, open to reality, and to the truth.  I now know who I am and why I’ve felt the way I did throughout my life.  This does not mean I disregard other interests and talents, but as a naturist I follow the truth and love being me!

Since I have a choice, why not be the Human I truly am, with realistic body image, sociality, and openness, rather than trying to be something I am not, and ending up a biased hermit?

Answer

You may have noticed that these answers include three topics under each main heading.  I guess that means this is really a 3-H-3 model.  But to keep things simple and easy to remember, if asked, I just say I’m a naturist because it makes me HAPPY, HEALTHY, and HUMAN.

An amazing philosophy and bring the reasons for naturism right down to basics. Great stuff - thank you for sharing

Naturism’s 3-H’s

Good question!

A better question is, "Why are you clothed?"

Naked is our natural state.  Clothing is what departs from nature, costs money, takes labor, is inconvenient, and has to have a reason.

Good one Ken.

Yea, Bob. I would tend to be less defensive these days, depending of who and what context I am addressing.

Then, there is the tact of, "Would you ask a dog or horse, why they are not wearing clothes? I'm supposed to be this way."

To any naturists, this is a very stupid question. We must be an extremely tolerant lot. Or we have been trained since an early age not to laugh in others faces. Why am I bare, indeed! Fool!

You would think that by producing happy, healthy and a more embracing humanity, nudity and naturism would be more acceptable. But too many Grinches are there to push an alternate agenda.

Thanks for the post, Ken!

An "alternate agenda." Me thinks from people straight out of an alternate universe. Prudery is just simply a goofball idea, manufactured and completely out of touch with human nature.

Psychologically its part of religious and political control.  If the Priests can get people to do something that is both difficult and uncomfortable, the person will come to believe that it must be "good" or "necessary" to justify their effort and suffering to themselves.   As a long range practice forcing people to be clothed and prudish causes them to obey because obedience to authority is "just what is right."

I could spit out the short answer 3-H's, I could go on and on and on, too. There isn't much time to explain, usually. People look for a context to put things into their own reference. They want it quick and are often just making themselves available for a short answer, as their own opinions are more important to them. People often just let it go, and accept the naturist, but still harbor the opinion, "Well, it's harmless, but it's weird."

The question sometimes isn't "Why are you a naturist?" but "Why are you not wearing clothes?" So, what would be the most effective response to that positional, even confrontational stance?

Then there is the "why are you" subtly put on us in the first person, which is more diplomatic, or persuasive, or therapeutic. They want to go on and on about what they do and why. I suppose that it is kind of teaching, and I must remember that that is what I would like to do. An example, "Well, I don't do that because I might get an erection, or sunburn in the wrong spot,or..." Generally people don't ask me why I do what I do, or live as I do. They seldom listen.

"Why do you go to the trouble of going to a place where you can be naked? I just don't see the point. I just do the practical thing, I wear clothes, which is not a big deal." They believe that I'm the extremist, not their textile obsessed foolishness, but they actually don't want an answer from me.

I suppose that if I quickly spit out the three H's and show my fingers, I might be able to talk through each briefly, holding the attention as I did the finger count down. I might in that way get a point in edgewise a bit longer and make some headway.

I have gotten further when I quickly responded, "If you ever spent three days continuously nude in a supportive accepting environment, you would understand. Putting clothing back on, then feels just plain wrong." They stop, their wheels begin to turn with that foreign concept, they begin to picture it and then there is an opportunity to quickly spit out something further, like the three H's. It makes me Happy, Healthy and more Human...using fingers to outline and control the coming points to be made, before the conversation gets two sided again.

Do you know the look, the one one of them might give, and you just know that they are thinking, "You're not gonna take your clothes off and be naked NOW are you?" or "Oh my God, he might want me to get naked with him! What if he's one of them perverts after me?" Fright, or flight?

How about, "Nude is the natural state of things, wearing clothing is an obsession." AND before they have a chance to dictate the story-line and perspective, like some talk show host on Fox.

Yes, I have heard those responses before.

I have a similar reaction to any fanatic that demands others, not only do what they say, but to actually believe it also.

I step back to avoid contact.
