Amber Lake, WA, USA
« on: April 18, 2017, 03:03:42 PM »
Yesterday it rained all night and all morning but by about mid day the rain ended.  I was going house crazy so i went out to Amber Lake where there is a hiking trail and fishing access.  Since it had been so rainy there was nobody else there.   I got out and strolled about near the water at the fishing access.

Amber Lake is one of the nearby lakes where solid basalt layer was carved out during ice age mega floods.  They have no drainage so they fill with rain water.  Amber lake is about a mile long.  It is surrounded by farms and ranches.

This image shows the basalt rock from which the lake was carved.

You can see a farm building across the lake in this picture.

There is this sign informing local fishing rules.  Only single barbless hooks, not bait allowed.

The park people installed these rocks near the boat launch.  I'm not sure if its to keep people on the ramp, or to prevent launching large boats.

The say was cloudy when it wasn't raining.  It also wasn't very warm so I didn't stay very long.  As I was driving away from the lake I passed a car headed toward the lake with one of those fishing "boats" that are really just 2 pontoons with a seat between.   I just don't understand why its so much fun to torture fish.

The water is barely above freezing.   Its only been a couple of cold, rainy weeks since the ice melted.   Maybe next August.

It's not about the fish - it's about getting away from the wife and drinking BEER.

I have heard that from many sources, JOhn! I'll warrant it's close to the mark. Some women do it for relief also.

I am not enthusiastic about fishing. When I have fished it is usually by invitation. If you are in a boat, I am more aware of how peaceful it is. I think the quiet, peaceful rocking of the boat and the infrequent conversation, along with BEER, is the main attraction.

Of course you have to pick a lake with no power boats pulling wild eyed youngsters with planks strapped to their feet.

Fishin' GOOD! When I catch a fish, the process is fun. Waiting is just alright. Big fish, big meal, the more the better. Naked fishing even better. Naked makes everything better.

Driving a big boat with trawling, getting out into the outdoors, casting the perfect cast, landing on target, wondering if that pole is going to break, the line, getting a suntan, the fight of a catfish, or a wahoo, it is all good, with or without the BEER. I took my wife, or my girl along always when I was fishing...naked.

I recall reading a message on a forum where there wasn't much male input, where a woman said she was "Sick of dealing with men's carp." (Perhaps she was so outraged that maybe her hands weren't too steady.)

And another woman replied saying, "Yeah, they go out fishing and maybe they catch something, but then they want you to clean it and cook it and serve it to them, and do all the washing up afterward." There was general amusement.

Where I grew up, carp was a trash fish. Too boney and stringy. Most of them were thrown back.
We also practiced you clean what you catch. She should have said so.

That is a lot of carp to deal with!  ;) She was probably right on both points.

I always let the carp go. They are carpy eating. The catfish were not so lucky. We'd keep at least one for lunch.

You know the best way to eat a carp?  Wire it to a board and throw it in the fire.  When the board is black, cut off the carp and eat the board.

Ken, that reminds me of some instructions for preparing tofu:

1. Open packaging.
2. Throw tofu in the trash.
3. Cook some meat!

Day of The Carp?
Peter, that sounds like a bad "B" movie.  :D

I guess you could put this under the heading "you can't win"! As much as carp have taken a beating here I just wanted to share this little bit of knowledge as it pertains to fish consumption here. https://www.wvdhhr.org/fish/Current_Advisories.asp .
