Kilts
« on: October 18, 2023, 12:07:05 AM »
As I got tired of looking for the how to cover up thread, I thought I'd start anew.

It looks like the Ohio boys are coming back after being crushed by covid. We can order those kilts at about the same price again, but the arrival will be later in the year. The announcement just came in the email today.

I've gotten a heck of a lot of use out of mine. It's been next to me or under me for two cross country trips and a hundred other excursions carnuding, etc. It has stood up to abuse. I have two in reserve, one for more formal occasions.

You gotta have the legs for it!  My skinny little pins look awful in a kilt.  Whilst I know I shouldn't be bothered by appearances but in this case I'm so far off any appearance that I'd tolerate, it's a hopeless endeavour.   I'd like to use one but also it's just too sociologically difficult to maintain one's deportment in the face of the hail of derision engendered from everyone one encounters!

There are at least half a dozen Nat Ram walkers on the south coast of England, including myself, who wear kilts at the start of a Nat Ram walk.
I always wear mine after the walk to eat in the pub.
I have never yet heard a derogatory remark.

I often stop in motorway service areas to use the gents whilst wearing the kilt when driving to a walk, and have never had anybody make any comment.
I have even filled up with fuel and walked into the shop to queue to pay whilst wearing the kilt.

I did once have a foreigner obviously trying to ask me (in very poor English), what was under the kilt.
I said it was a matter of personal preference - just like under trousers.
He persevered, obviously asking whether I was wearing anything.
I just said ‘No’ and moved away to talk to my walking friends.

Norman.

I've driven across the country four times using the kilt as the primary pump gas, eat and buy necessities wardrobe. That covers lots of very conservative territory, podunk and intolerant people. I got a crack from in a truck-stop urinal in Oklahoma from a guy who nearly ran away when I followed him out the door, a foot taller than him and his buddy gone. And a crack addressed to a buddy in a remote nothin' happens town in west Texas, I got a a snicker in that town from a local woman and one in Safford Arizona in a fast food Taco shop (If you know Safford, ya know what I mean.). That's it as I remember. I had a clerk in a Circle K (convenience Mart) tell me it was "sick." But soon found that that was a term for "very cool."

No telling what may have happened behind my back, but it has been safe so far. I can always fall back on the "my heritage" line, or maybe it has something to do with respect, or disrespect, for my age. Some social gatherings, or a bar might be risky, at most.

There is a concern with fitting in that is irrational. I got over that back when I used to wear medieval garb  to and from SCA events several years ago. People look. Try wearing a kit on Halloween. You'll probably find that there need not be any worries.

I've seen Yeldew in his kilt several times - he has fitter legs than me!
On the question of safety that you mention, Jbee, I suspect that there are very few places in Britain (particularly not Scotland, of course) that would not tolerate a man in a kilt with no more than amused indifference.  That's why Yeldew can walk into a bar in his kilt and feel no less safe than he would in trousers.  Maybe I'm too starry eyed but those who would confront a kilt wearer simply to vent some latent hate and bigotry are in the smallest of minorities, I tend to believe.
I asked a kilted Scotsman once what was worn under the kilt.
"Och, laddie," he replied, "nothing at all!  It's all in perfect working order!"

I understand any not wanting to be seen for not being like what standards say we should be like. Those standards are what should be fought against. Nothing will effectively fight against it to overturn standards that are not fair to all people like nudism and naturism that we freely need, so it is needed more generally.

So, Nuduke looks better just plain naked? The total package generally tends to be as you say. Vanity wrapped in a fabric combo that makes one look different than one naturally is, is a tough obstacle.

Perhaps a slimmer tighter fitting ensemble to lengthen the legs, draw attention toward a tight butt, and a shorter length? Lines drawn downward?  ;D DF's legs probably have the same problem and I'm borderline. Clothing and fashion can be such a problem. Yup, naked can't.

I think part of the kilt thing is that the archetype is Scottish kilts.  Now, you never really see a scotsman or kilt wearers in general wearing a kilt without substantial footwear and knee length socks.  This balances out the lower parts with the torso and makes ones legs look more chunky.
The long socks are almost a pair of trousers underneath the kilt! See: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/15903404924155815/
However, in a naturist context, the socks shoes and kilt ensemble is anathema.  We wear the kilt in public to be a little more naked underneath it and when hiking naked the kilt is a temporary cover up so one doesn't need to look sartorially elegant whilst wearing it.
The thing about proper kilts is that they are fairly substantial garments weighing about 3lb.  My preference is for a towelling wrap or a sarong of some sort (just ounces). I have 3 Kikoys, which are just a rectangle of nice fabric worn around the waist.  The Kikoy is a Kenyan version of an Indian Lunghi or a south east Asian sarong (sort of).  The length comes 2/3 of the way down the calf and so looks much more natural and balanced when worn as the only garment.
Here's me wearing one

The currently fashionable long baggy basketball shorts look so much like a skirt that people can't tell if you have turned them into a "kilt". All you have to do is cut along the crotch and sew (or even just safety pin) the front and back together. The pictures show the front and inside view of the way it's pinned to form a skirt. I just tried it out hiking on a crowded beach and no one thought anything of it. Although I live in a gender fluid area, so maybe no one thought anything of a guy wearing a skirt!

My pictures are too large so I'm going to try sharing them from my google drive.

Can't say I've seen shorts like that in the UK although we don't play so much basketball.  Your remodelling of the pair looks OK, Jbee.  Very punk rock with all the safety pins!!
