Thanks for the offer, Karla, but it led to three successive thoughts:

1 What set me off in the first place was Kensunwalker's cynical theft of my picture, and he'd have been qualified under this scheme, so it wouldn't help.

Well it wouldn't help after the act except that I could then say to the poster that I could then threaten to delete their account and do so if they don't take them down to stop more thefts in the future. Otherwise there is nothing I can really do.

I'm not sure what the purpose of a private section would be.  The whole point of posting on Internet is to SHARE materials, words, photos, etc., with other people.  If nobody can access then one might as well leave it in our own device.

That might actually be the best response. It only affects the person who did something wrong, and it gives them a chance to correct it before any consequences are applied. Finally, it provides a warning so that if it happens again the person would know to expect the consequences (which on a second offense would be indicative of a willful disregard of the rules).

I found a thread on a different board where someone posted a link to their blog, which features numerous stolen photographs, and a guy  really took them apart for it. No, it's not me under another name, but I like what he says! A conversation ensued where the crook admitted what he's doing, but says he has no choice in the matter, as though the blog is somehow vital, and he has to keep feeding it (thinking of "Audrey Junior" here). It's interesting to see that someone can do this with full knowledge of what's happening, and just calmly say that they're planning to continue.

From the 1st time I posted a photo online, I have decided that anything I put out there is out there. I have lost control of it. It would be like publishing a book and placing boxes of them around town on the sidewalk with a bucket and a sign that says, “New novel” please leave payment in the bucket. Then expecting everyone to pay in full and that the bucket not only would still be there but still have the money in it.

I can only control what is in the photo.

Like others here I have occasionally copied a photo but since I don’t have a website I can’t use them and if I still have them I’ve no idea where they are on my computer. Too many files to sift through and they usually are named some 18 character hexadecimal number giving no indication of the content.

Yes, asking for an ok would have been a better idea and bypassed all the hoopla! Oh, well.
Please continue to post your photos on those trips, John. Great job!

I agree about the private section on the forum. Makes things too complicated and may drive others away. Most people are acquainted with the expectation of inherent ownership and if not, will eventually find out if they hang around long enough.

Scrolling through the data section shows a large number of visitors but not that many takers. Most people just browse and don’t participate.

You could pin this topic where visitors see it when 1st reading the front page. Sort of sending a message about the site preferences. Scanning through this topic would allow anyone to come to the best conclusion if tempted.

In the end, as Karla said, there’s not much to do about it.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you .... take this with the privacy aspect of the drone thread, toss in the stuff we read about Google and Facebook sweeping up all our data habits, and there's privacy gone for good. The only hope we can hang on to lies in the massive amount of all that data, inside which we never show up as individuals.

The Prisoner was wrong, we are all just numbers (very old TV show reference, possibly lost on our US membership -sorry)

That one was British too, it had Samantha Eggar in it. A disturbing tale.

I learned on a web development project for a client a few years ago that by no means all traffic/hits on your website are people.  A lot of website traffic on any site is bots and automated advertising and malwares searching for vulnerable prey.
