the Irish Have One Now (officially)

Apparently Ireland now has It’s 1st legal nude beach, Hawk Cliff. The photo in the article looks nice until you look at it’s location in Google Earth (see .kmz file below). It looks precarious and rocky, but without a good set of photos it’s hard to tell.

As usual “Ireland amended its law regarding public nudity so it's only an offense if someone is "intending to cause fear, distress or alarm", whatever that means. How does you prove intent until they actually do something?

On its face it means that anyone just wandering around naked minding his own business, going shopping, or having a pint at the pub is not intending to cause fear, distress or alarm.  However zealous cops and courts sometimes insist that merely being naked in public demonstrates "intent" to cause fear or distress.  When someone (even the cop) complains that "I've been distressed by your nudity" then that's sufficient grounds to demonstrate your intent. 

It happens when legislatures or similar bodies of politician want to appease everyone by refusing to pass a clear law.   Then won't make nudity illegal because the freedom advocates would be upset, but they won't make it legal either because the anti-body zealots would be upset. 

Bad law. Bad politicians.

We should be celebrating this. It represents a huge step forward in what was a very prudish country, fought and gained by the small Irish Naturist Federation. Staying at the BN Gathering in Scotland the Irish gave an informed account of the difficulties they've had and what they are doing to make naturism more acceptable. They hhave made  real advances. The law is actually pretty much the same as the UK on and us designed to cat h flashers not naturists something we should actually support

I agree Davie. It is progress and I hope you are right about the spirit of the law as written. But there are always those that are looking for ways to push an agenda and will abuse a law.

You are also right that we should be glad for the progress.
