Looks like we are about to get some desert rain! Whoopee!
It appears Rosa is headed our way but I think the Sonoran is gonna get pounded.

We will probably get some of the northern rain bands up here.
We can sure use it.

We have been dealing with what may become out wettest year since they began keeping records. This month alone we are about seven inches above normal thanks to the leftover rain from Florence. It is much needed rain in your parts but we have had enough. My fear is if this moisture pattern stays in place then we will be up to out necks in snow!

Birds fly south for the winter. Some animals hibernate and sleep it away, shutting down. Some grow winter fur coats. Trees sleep in dormancy until conditions happen. Many don't survive who attempt to live through the harsh hard winters.

Have you all socked in a good supply of nuts, or made plans to escape? Will you tough it out? Snow is a fun place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

I make due with what I have, in weather, the best that I can, naked-wise. I jump on opportunities and make do, compromising with what is less ideal. I do this, yet I live down here where the winter visitors and "snow birds" congregate...seemingly spoiled.

The mountains will soon siese to be a naked playground and we will be down in the warm valleys for the winter.

Yep, Eyesup, There is some wet weather over Baja California a swirling mass. Predictions here are telling us that 80% chance of rains will come. We'll all have to work around it. Local nature will love it.

We never pray or complain about rain around here, for fear that we may get what we pray for. Two years of drought has been hard.

Funny you should mention it. So, a few hours later, I climbed up to speak to a friend on a roof top, who pointed out the dark clouds to the SW. Undaunted, I left for Leows for plumbing fixtures. Walked in and when I walked out, it had arrived. Just getting started, but big glops of warm water, tropical storm stuff from down south. Next couple of days should be a sock in.

So far, we got diddley, zip, nada, zero, zilch, naught, squat, jack, in short, we got butkis.
Oh, well. Maybe next time in a few.

Wow! Guess that may be why your desert is mostly knee to waist high.

You are right, Jbee. Our landscape allows us to see for miles, but the desert plants don’t grow much higher than about four ft. Convenient for scenic views, but not good for concealment!

We are surrounded by mountains. Not particularly tall, the highest at about 12,000 ft., but high enough to alter the wind movement around us. Of course to the west are the Sierra’s. Truly tall mountains and they capture most of the moisture from the Pacific.

From the south, there are a few moderate hills but the desert between here and the Gulf takes most of the water. If you want to see trees in this desert, you have to go to the mountains.

Uh oh, some more rains will be plummeting the degrees into the Low 70's for "highs!" Positively frigid weather! Looks like I'll start having to do my yearly adjustment into an Englishmen's consciousness, and convince myself that it is indeed not as cold as I think that it is.

Just came in (9PM) from carrying some gas cans into the shop. It was around 80 deg this afternoon but was 66 as I nudely put the cans up. Not nearly cool enough to hinder being outside but taking some getting used to after a long stretch of highs in the 90's and lows only in the 70's.

BTW, something is going on with the neighbor's dogs here lately. There is no chorus when I go out at night. I know the owners have installed a fence-less enclosure that involves an underground wire and shock colors. Maybe in addition to keeping them home it keeps them quiet. My nude presence outside in my yard after dark taking out the trash or finishing some chore has not been announced to the world the last few times.

Yikes! How does that work?  Ever run afoul of the electric fence while out at night?

it wont be an electric fence , the dogs wear a collar that can give them a shock .  the shock is triggered by proximity of  a buried perimeter wire... same way a robot mower knows its got to the edge of the lawn.   

only downside is a dog in full angry mode may well charge straight over the wire and ignore it , same way a herd of cows can stampede through a normal electric fence

As fast as things grow in Louisiana, I'd think that an electric fence would short out every week or two.

Speaking of weather, I'd bet that the Hurricane Michael drenched out Louisiana three states over. Hope that Tanman's haunts are in place. I don't know if he goes all the way over to the panhandle when he hits the beach.

For much of this winter i have been walking naked for three hours or so in minus 2c temperatures. The body does get used to it. I walk the hills four or five times a week and have only been clothed four times in many months.

Those people often wore kilt wrap up there, which seems chilly to a desert rat. You must ceratinly have gotten used to cold and naked. To me, that much cold is astounding, with even a very slight breeze. People can't always wrap their heads around us hiking in 102F naked, but we get used to it...naked.

For November through January we had rain, wind, but daytime temperatures above freezing.   Then February happened.

Since the beginning of February we've had high temps below freezing or well below freezing, and SNOW, SNOW, SNOW. 

Almost thought we were going to escape severe winter.
