Frog Gigging - It's A Country Thing!
« on: April 19, 2023, 02:51:57 AM »
This thread isn't exactly about nude hiking, but I suppose it's still "free range naturism", as it's about an activity that I enjoy while nude out and about. Nuduke, John, had asked about "Frog Gigging", which I had mentioned in my introduction post. The fact is, a LOT of people don't know what frog gigging is, so I thought I'd share a bit about it.

Frog gigging is essentially hunting bullfrogs. In Arkansas, it can actually be done by gig, spring-loaded mechanical grab, hand-grabbing, hook-and-line, or archery. Typically, frog hunting of any method is done at night, because that's when bullfrogs are most active. A bright spotlight is used, which causes the frog to sit still due to the sudden brightness of the light. That allows one to get close enough to capture the frog by whichever method is being used, before the frog leaps into the water. Of course, you have to keep your body out of the light, so you don't block the beam from the frog. My preference is the gig, which is basically a short spear, with three or four barbed "prongs", sort of like a miniature pitchfork. It's not thrown, though, it's used in-hand to spear the frog. My son uses a gig, also, but often hand-grabs the frogs.

Being a water sport, and typically being done along wooded and brushy shorelines, bare skin is the perfect frog hunting attire! Although my son always wears a pair of shorts, I always hunt completely nude. It just makes so much more sense, since we're usually in and out of the boat in order to reach those wooded and brushy spots that the frogs are in. We take turns managing the boat and the light, while the other closes in for the kill/grab. A few minutes back in the boat, and I'm completely dry, while my son's often shivering in wet shorts! LOL!

Often, we hunt without the boat, simply walking along roads or through the woods while listening for frogs. (Bullfrogs croak loudly and distinctively.) When we find a good area, we wade and/or swim through the water, again taking turns with the light. Again, being completely nude is the best way to do this. The last time we did it this way, it was in one of his spots. He drove, and when he parked at the end of the "good" road, I stripped nude and barefoot, leaving everything in the car. He wore shorts and old running shoes. We walked a few miles that night, hunting several different small bodies of water, then walking through the woods to the next, and so on.

When we or I go to one of our favorite boat hunting spots, I'm often nude before even leaving home. I normally keep a pair of shorts in the Jeep, just in case. Once, he had to remind to get them before we left...there was a sheriff department sobriety check along the way that night...probably a good thing I had them! Since it's usually late at night, there's rarely anyone at the boat ramp, so I just park, ready the boat, back down the ramp and launch, then reverse the procedure when finished. The boat ramp and parking area are the only lighted spot around, but I've never had any trouble, even when people have been active at the nearby campground, which is in sight about fifty yards away across the water. Once the boat's ready to go, I leave the shorts in the Jeep, and never take any clothing with me in the boat. It will be interesting if some night a game warden checks for my fishing license (yes, it's required for frogs), life preserver, and boat registration...those items are always in my boat...there may be questions about my frog hunting attire! LOL!

Oh, and fortunately, snakes and alligators are always naked, and don't even seem to notice my lack of clothing!

I'm supposing that you are talking about frog hunting opposed to toad hunting. Do you eat the frogs, Or is it just sport?

Toad jabbin’ is the term that they used, when I was introduced to the practice by some former boyscouts. We were teenagers just about age ready to get drivers licenses in Michigan. As boyscouts, they had camped at one’s uncles Christmas tree farm before this. He eldest had dad’s car after we got the wino Bubba to buy beer for us. We pre-stashed it in the woods buried.

A parent dropped us off for a couple of days camping out. We got very drunk, probably rather quickly. It started with jumping the flames of the extra-large campfire. We had entertained ourselves, melting the glass beer bottles to perfection into ashtrays. We had cigarettes, cigars and probably some pipe tobacco.

I went up the hill into the tree at one point to privately dispose of waste and somewhere along the process, all of my clothing was dismissed. I think that I had my pants off, when someone threatened to steal them to embarrass me. The prank didn’t work on me. It was a nice warm evening with a hot fire. It gave me a sense of liberation and enhanced my inebriated kids gone wild attitude and demeanor.

“Toad jabbin” was brought up as an old boyscout activity. Nostalgically, we stumbled through the woods to the local creek. I was given lessons. We cut straight sticks, sharpened them, and made our way through mud, brush and soggy leaves to the wet. A flashlight was eventually used, as I vaguely remember, but it was moonlight mostly, in the dark thickness, listening. Hey, I don’t remember results. Surprise! I do remember it as sport, but destructive.

Anyway, fully nude fit, although it was more difficult to navigate in the very thick vegetation all around.
I do remember rolling around naked in some brush, having difficulty standing up proper. It was poison ivy, butt naked.
The next day, all were miserable scratching, but me. The naked one wasn’t allergic!

We also wandered the countryside, finally sneaking quietly in stealth out to try our hand at cow tipping. There was no luck finding a sleeping cow, but we did disturb some pigs, attempting piggyback riding, until we heard the farmer and saw the lights. He probably knew what was going on the way that we were yelling around the campfire a quarter mile away. Nobody was shot, but that certainly crossed our minds.

Last week, an eccentric friend of mine was discussing toad licking. He milks the local Colorado River Toads for their venom, instead of licking them. It gives “a fifteen minute visit with God,” he says. They squirt from glands.  The other friend in the conversation told how he was looking down at one and got it in the eye.

There is a private “Toad Sanctuary” that I know, to keep the lickers from harming the toads.

It is all pretty weird to me, kissing slimy old toads when they come out of burrows at night during the summer rains to mate. I was told that this weird extraction can be very lucrative. People pay to be lead into the woods and given the venom!
Toad liickin', it's a hippie thing!

Well, thank you for the detailed explanation, Jim.  That has advanced my education by another notch!!  :)
I must admit that it does seem rather a cruel and wasteful sport to me.  Is there a good reason for frog hunting other than your entertainment?  Do you eat them, for instance?  Are they so numerous that they need culling for some reason?

Great story JBee from your younger days!! A lot of that story sounds pretty familiar!! My close friends and I had a lot of similar experiences. Looking back, I only wish I'd had the nerve to be naked around my friends for some of our adventures.

And, yes, JBee and Nuduke, we do eat the frogs. Wouldn't want to hunt anything I don't intend to eat. They have plenty of meat on the back legs, and the larger ones also have a useful amount of meat on the front legs. Battered and fried, or just sauteed in butter, they're very good! My son's even worked out how to grill them over low heat.

No, no eating or licking of toads! We like the toads to be around to help control insect pests. But, we just let them be. Even the dogs learn quickly not to pick them up, lick, or bite them. Even the common toads excrete a mild venom that causes a bad taste and foaming of the mouth that looks like rabies.

In Arkansas, we do have a community called "Toad Suck" and a festival in Conway called "Toad Suck Daze". Here's the story on that...

Long ago, steamboats traveled the Arkansas River when the water was at the right depth. When it wasn’t, the captains and their crew tied up to wait where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now spans the river. While they waited, they refreshed themselves at the local tavern there, to the dismay of the folks living nearby, who said: “They suck on the bottle ’til they swell up like toads.” Hence, the name Toad Suck. The tavern is long gone, but the legend and fun live on at Toad Suck Daze.

Have a blessed NUDE day!

I'm glad you hunt them for food not sport, Jim.  I stand corrected and feel better!
I assume they are in profusion and not in any way endangered or rare.  I guess they must be very common, from your last reply.
Happy Frog Gigging!

We were just drunken teenagers that had been taught to kill for sport, by our elder Boyscout leaders. It's a good thing that we were so unsuccessful.  ;)

I am amazed that in 2023 there are so many people that have never eaten frog legs. Didn't everyone study Mark Twain in school and read about the Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee.  I have been frog gigging, but was never successful. I must have had poor mentors in the frog gigging arena. The best use of a gig is flounder gigging.  That's another sport that's best done nude.

Another sport that was a teenage right of passion was Snipe hunting. Snipes are certainly not eaten, so it is purely for sport. Casualties are certain to happen, but the ever elusive Snipe always ends up on top. I've never heard on anyone hunting snipe while nude, but that could be an added element to the hunt.

Jim, noodling season is upon us! https://youtu.be/hpvqhcSzT8w. Another father/son activity? I am not sure I would recommend nudity for this sport.

Safebare,

It's surprising to me, too, but it seems that frog gigging is not widely known for some reason. From what I know, flounder gigging is a lot like frog gigging, although I've never been. I have eaten a lot of flounder over the years...but not nearly enough! I can certainly understand the benefits of doing it nude!

Noodling is another "niche sport". I've never done it, but it's pretty common around Arkansas...more so in Oklahoma. I think doing it nude would be a pretty good idea. Most of the damage would involve hands and arms, which are typically bare when noodling, so they're already getting damaged.

Yes, Snipe hunting is an excellent sport! I still recall my son's first Snipe hunting adventure, with great enjoyment!

John,
Yes, we have an abundant population. And, not too many folks hunt them anymore. Also, I'm happy to say that I provide good breeding habitat in my pond, that produces a lot of bullfrogs each year. I don't hunt them there, I just let them have their little sanctuary to themselves each Spring. My pleasure from that is that I really enjoy listening to them, along with all the tree frogs, cicadas, and all the other night critters.

We also were often drunken teenagers! But, we took our meat harvesting/sport very seriously!

You know, memories get a little foggy as the years go by. I mentioned that I wish I'd been brave enough to be nude around my friends. According to his memory, my best friend, Jeff, insists that our other close friend, Lewis, and I did, in fact, go skinny-dipping during at least one of our outings, but that he was the reluctant one that kept his shorts on to swim in the lake. Apparently, Jeff's reluctance had more to do with snapping turtles than being shy, though. As I remember it, Lewis and I did strip to our underwear to swim, but I don't think we got naked on that trip. But, who has it right? We may never know for sure!

Now, several years prior...probably age 10 or so, Lewis and I did skinny-dip together on a few occasions. We often swam from our dock on the lake I grew up on. Since we had both been confident swimmers most all of our lives, we were not closely supervised. Mom kept an eye on us from the kitchen windows, since the house was on a hill overlooking the lake. We wore cut-off blue jean shorts to swim, and once in the water, we dared each other to take off the shorts and button the waistband around the swim ladder. Then it was another "dare you" game to see how far away from the dock we'd swim. We both got pretty brave after the first few times, and swam out and around the cypress trees that grew several yards out from the docks. I remember that we felt confident that our nakedness couldn't be seen in the muddy water. But that was based on us, treading water and looking at each other to see how visible we were. I don't think we accounted for our bare butts being just below (and probably often above) the lake's surface as we stretched out and swam our charted courses. Thinking back, if Mom had looked at the right moments, she would have almost certainly been able to see that we were naked. Perhaps she did, and just didn't care.

A neighbor had a lake cabin over at least one summer. Guy & I were regular skinnydippers there, at times even when his twin sister was with us. But that was mostly to taunt her. We were 8 or 9 at the time. Remember explaining ourselves to their dad at some point, not sure if he caught us or responded to a complaint from Anna. He was totally supportive of the skinnydipping., probably not so much the taunting. 🤣

During college a bunch of friends & I would head to the beach for the weekend. I was usually the first one to get naked for the midnight swims and bonfires. Once I remember that the vibe was off, something didn't feel right. So I kept my baggies on. My friends couldn't understand why i wasn't naked. Its great having friends that care. I don't remember what was bothering me at the time, pretty sure it was something about the girlfriend.

Another favorite skinnydipping memory was while the phosphorus was active. The waves would light up as would our bodies in the surf. Body surfing provided a personal light show that couldn't be beat. My buddy, Tom, found out that the splash of pee hitting the water would glow intensely, so he started spinning around creating magical circles. His wife didn't seem impressed at all, but we had a blast!

Humans! So playful....

I didn't skinnydip until I was 16. I thought about it a lot. I remember seeing the opening scene of the movie Disney Hailey Mills "Pollyanna" and being intrigued by those kids swinging naked into the river. It planted something in me.
