Lost but Found

Bears Ears XVIII
After Memorial Day crowds leave, the place feels dramatically different. After a morning nude walking, we quest for more and go looking for ruins and a cave to the north of camp. Here's what happens.

That locale looks very hot and dry.
When you are camping, Jbee, typically, what sort of time would you wake and get up out of the tent?

The crows told us when to awaken generally. It would depend on what time we went to bed. We'd intend to sleep all that we pleased and stretch all that we pleased.

We'd get out of the tent around time for the sun to poke over the hill to the east, illuminating the trees above and the beams of light would warm us, or when the world outside would be compelling. We always had the top off, just the net-tent topping, so we were outside essentially all night and into the morning, just cozy heavy blankets, or we'd toss them aside. By the clock...irrelevant. I did have an old watch with an alarm set for 7:14 for years, that I didn't know how to change. We'd wake up around that time, often.

Best answer I've got! ???

So not usually at dawn then?
And...why 7.14 on the alarm? I can't get up unless my alarm is set on a multiple of 5 minutes preferably the hour, half or quarter hours.  It's somehow messy and unsatisfying to alarm at, say, 7.14 or 8.26.  7.15, 7.30 or 8.30 for me! :D

Forty or fifty years ago, the company Rorer manufactured a methaqualude pill labeled 714, later Lemmon 714. The number is whimsical and memorable to many old enough to have been a part of the sex, drug and rock&roll culture of those long ago days. I think those batteries have lasted decades and the dang watch is very difficult and directions disappeared decades ago. The memory of a number that has popped up surprisingly often in those intervening decades has to be a most memorable number. Another similar less old reference is 420 amongst friendly pot fiends. For some, meet me at 7:14 is better memorized than meet me at 7:00, or 7:30. Perhaps so many mornings ago, "shall we get up at 7:00am or 7:30am was compromised somewhere in the middle.

Many, if not most, refinery roads are posted 14.5 mph. If you are caught (by camera) going 15 mph, you will receive a warning. Any faster and you risk being led offsite.
Fodder, I know.

Safebare, you've got me confused. I read that several times and it's not sinking. in.

Also Nuduke, I may wake up, or lay around ,or even sleep until it gets warm enough to uncover and walk about comfortably.

That's nice.  I had visions of you springing up before even the crack of dawn and getting aggressively about your camping chores and preparing breakfast on a camp fire and whatnot.  Much more attractive prospect to lay about until you can't lay any more!  But you didn't answer my question really.  I was wondering what time of day you would start hiking and then before that how long it takes to wake up, wash (if you do) and make breakfast (if you do).  The process of morning in a camp, I guess, is what I'm asking and around what time of day that occurs.  I assume in Az you have to start hiking early to avoid the heat of the day.  Or don't you bother about that?

Jbee "Safebare, you've got me confused. I read that several times and it's not sinking. in."

I know exactly what I meant! Lol.

You were explaining the 7:14 alarm setting. That it was neither (or either) 7:00 or 7:30.

Jbee: "meet me at 7:14 is better memorized than meet me at 7:00, or 7:30. Perhaps so many mornings ago, shall we get up at 7:00am or 7:30am was compromised somewhere in the middle."

If you want people to show up at a certain time be specific. If I say 7, I can expect people to arrive at some point after 7, usually significantly after 7. If I say the party starts at 7:14 I bet most people will be there closer to the scheduled time. I simply applied the same concept to speed limits in the refineries.

We're usually on the trail later than planned. How many chores depends on backpacking, or car camping. If, we eat. or how elaborate we eat. How much prep did we do the night before. Getting ready always takes longer than we think that it should. realistically, an hour or two.

Do I have to pack up? I do the tent, the deflating, the rolling up of bags, bed and bedding, usually while DF cooks, prepares or warms up something to eat. We help each other out. Trips to the latrine. Maybe a meditation, or a Chi Gung happens.
We are very rarely trying to get up early, just earlier.

Maybe an hour or two, and more often two hours are spend...somehow.

It is all variable. We'll get up to avoid the real heat of the day, or plan a shorter hike. Hot only happens some times. We do Golilocks and get "Just right" temperatures.

I've got a minute for an addendum. Morning can include latrine, a simple pre-made almond cereal, or yogurt breakfast, or pull out the little stove and have eggs, or oats. Dishes may need cleaned. Cleaning dishes, pots ware etc. is tedious and takes some time. We rarely cook over the fire and never make a fire just for that. It is for ambiance, or heat. We don't leave coals overnight. It is just risky, when there are dry conditions. I have however bought a book about campfire recipes, which is delicious and that policy may change for the sake of fun and tastebuds in the future. For now, I'm first going for firepit in the yard at home.

We get up with the intention to get out there asap, but time flies during camping duties.

We usually make a point of being back at camp for dinner, setting up, etc. around 4pm as a rule of thumb.

There is a lack of modern conveniences, which can be looked at as a more healthy mindful thing, or inconvenient. There are tradeoffs. There is a tendency to have to work, stoop, be more active when camping, which I think is better for health. One tradeoff is that it is done in a wonderful natural setting, breathing in pure air, naturally nude. It feels more alive, more real, I appreciate the life of the mundane activities.

That's the spur!  I wish I could be likewise.
