Naked Trigpointing
« on: March 19, 2014, 05:22:07 AM »
I was wondering if anybody has tried this.  I've only recently started looking for trig points, finding them and once I get there take a few naked photos.

This was near me at a point called Binny Craig

We don't have big trig point monuments to go find over here (USA) but it looks like fun.   Enjoy!

Hi there, welcome to the forum.

Scotland has lots of trig points. How about a midnight attempt on Arthur's Seat (probably best done on a full moon). In terms of the highlands, the easiest one would be on the south peak of Ben Chonzie near Crieff. Drive up Glen Turret to the dam and climb the peak to the west and there it is. We've bagged a few in our time including Meall Ghaordaidh http://freerangenaturism.com/MunroBagging/002_MeallGhaordaidh/meallghaordaidh.htm Ben More - http://freerangenaturism.com/MunroBagging/008_BenMore/benmore.htm, Ben Hope http://freerangenaturism.com/MunroBagging/006_BenHope/benhope.htm, Driesh http://freerangenaturism.com/MunroBagging/029_Driesh/driesh.htm and a few others we haven't put up yet.

I like a summit with a trig point. It always feels so official  :D

I've been told that when dogs salivate, waiting for their bone, that it is good for their teeth.  ;D
Obviously looking forward to your posts.

Some years ago, maybe 20 or more, the Ordnance Survey started desmantling the trig points (they've not been needed for surveying for a good long time with aerial photography and sattellite imaging). One of my favourites, on top of Pen-y-Fan in South Wales, was an early victim and I mourn it's loss whenever I walk the Brecon Beacons ridge. Fortunately, they listened to the clamour of dismay from walkers and stopped the programme, and instead sought people to adopt them. Not sure what happened thereafter, but they're still a feature of the UK landscape thank goodness.

I like the idea of a moonlit pose by the trig point on Arthur's Seat some time, and I'll hope to acquaint myself with a few more naked concrete pillars this summer.

This might be helpful, it's a kmz file for every trig point in the UK if you have Google Earth installed.

Hey Stuart

Thanks for that Google earth file.  I can now see where the trig points are and check them out on trigpointinguk

Thank you

Thanks Stuart. I'll treat the info in that file with some caution as it includes at least one trig point which I know was removed back in the 1990's (Pan-y-Fan, SO 01209 21583). I'm guessing it's based on original data from the Ordnance Survey which would have been compiled before they started to remove the pillars.

One way to check the presence of a pillar included in the Google Earth file would be to view the current OS map. That can be done on the Streetmap.co.uk website. Here's their map for Pan-y-Fan which has no trig point marked :
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=301500&y=221500&z=120&sv=pen-y-fan&st=3&tl=Map+of+Pen+y+Fan,+Powys+&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf

Cheers, George

Thread resurrection!

I've done a few naked trigpoints in my time, including a few arty-farty self portrait ones using camera, tripod and filters!  At least doing it this way if anyone comes you can always explain yourself by saying you are taking "artistic" nude self portaits for art / photography class!

Just trying to find a couple of examples which are lost somewhere in my computers mass of files!  ::)
