World Naked Bike Ride, London 2016
« on: June 12, 2016, 09:00:59 PM »
As I said in another thread, I attended one of the starts (out of about 6) of the World Naked Bike Ride in London. This was in Regent's Park, and there were maybe a hundred cyclists. It was a very happy crowd, obviously a lot of fun for the participants, with some people in bits of costume or body paint. It was nice to see that most of the participants really were naked, and although there was a very large male majority, there were some women and most of them were naked, too.

The group gathered under some big trees, which was a good thing because for a while, there was light rain.
A marshal was on hand to give information, but people were told not to undress yet.
There was a TV crew, very young and informally dressed.
   Bikes waiting for use.
The TV people got some interviews done while the group assembled. They talked to some participants, and a few passers-by.
The woman in blue and green had "Mermaids don't drive" written on her skin. But do they ride bikes instead?
As takeoff time drew closer, the marshal used a loudspeaker (not a very reliable one).
   Raindrops on the camera lens.
The marshal said "When I stop speaking, you can undress". Some of the group was greatly looking forward to this.
   A first-aid team was available.
   TV crew still at work.
Starting to get the bikes lined up.
   Show the flag!
Waiting for the signal to get lined up.
On the drive, ready to leave.
They're off, and a (clothed) photographer is capturing the action. But when the riders took their clothes off, I stripped too.
On their way out of the gates.
Out on the road, traffic had to stop. Yes, the architecture in that neighbourhood is a little grandiose.
   Lining up on the roadside.
Not all cyclists were in the demonstration!
She looks quite amused. Maybe she'll join next year?
They're still coming out of the park.
   Away they go.

It does look a bit nippy!

What was the reason, if at all, given for not undressing until the ok? That was a little puzzling.

By attending the start, do you mean you didn't participate in the ride? Did you demonstrate solidarity with the others in your attire?

The motivation might have been to make sure that there wasn't any trouble related to "naked people in a public park" as opposed to naked people out on the road. The object was to get everyone cycling, without any delays caused by (for example) inquisitive police officers asking why all these nude people were standing beside bicycles.

No, I didn't ride, and I'd need some practice before I'd feel safe on a bike these days! But as a matter of fact, I did undress when the others did, and all the pictures after "When I stop speaking, you can undress" were taken by me as a nude photographer. That includes the ones outside the park when the cyclists were on the street. Then when they were all gone, I was left standing there naked and all alone! I got dressed fairly quickly at that point.

Thanks for the series.  That's a lot of enjoyable pics. So, where are YOUR instructions on how to post them? They fit more that three in a tread. The blew up well. How'd you do that?

I'll post in the questions section about the code I used.

Unlike John P, I participated in the 2016 World Naked Bike Ride series, in Bristol. It was my third ride, having done Bristol and Exeter last year. We were a jolly crowd, officially 204 in number, doing two laps around the Bristol city centre, passing down pedestrian precincts, through parks, past the marriage registry office, to the amusement and apparent encouragement of most of the onlookers, of whom there were many on a Saturday lunchtime. Legally, a column of cyclists is one long vehicle, so once the front has passed a green traffic signal everyone can follow through any subsequent red phases. This disrupted the car and bus traffic very nicely, but nobody seemed to mind.

In one of the parks there was a troupe of drummers performing an apparently endless routine. We passed them twice, and both times there was a stop, which allowed  riders to abandon the bikes and indulge in a spot of naked dancing. This shows up rather well in the online videos that I have seen.

There was little police interest evident, not least because they were expecting trouble from a rally at the same time nearby, organised by the politically ultra far right English Defence League, an event which always attracts an opposing group looking for a fight. In the event, it  not come to very much.

We circled the city centre for over two hours, on a cloudy but just warm enough day. The participants were mainly male, 80% perhaps, and most of us were naked.  Slogans and body paint abounded. Mainly conventional bicycles, with a smattering of electric and recumbent machines, and one unicycle.

Participating in WNBRs feels to me rather surreal, being naked in a clothed world with none of the concerns that are inevitably at the back of my mind when indulging in Free Range naturism on my own. It is certainly enjoyable, being able to cycle with nakedness as an incidental. Of course, as a WNBR rider you are going to appear in online videos as well as on countless smartphones around the world  if that bothers you. But as an elderly male, I am not a subject as cameraworthy as a nude girl! I had my claim to fame many years ago when I appeared naked on the cover of an English woman's magazine

All too soon, it came to an end, and it would have been ideal to drive the hundred miles home naked. However, a summer Saturday afternoon on a motorway is not the right place, so I had to be content with an unbuttoned shirt and one of Scott's Running  Kilts tucked under my seatbelt unless passing high vehicles.

Here's to the Exeter event in a few weeks time!

Thanks Barerider. Maybe this could be the thread for reports on WNBR everywhere.

This item was passed around among naturists in the northeastern United States. Montpelier is the capital of Vermont, where public nudity is legal, and although it's only a medium-sized town rather than a city, it usually gets a decent group of riders. This year the weather was poor, and turnout was low.

Looks like it was okay that we missed it this year:

Date: Saturday June 11 2016
Time: Gathered at 1pm, Rode at 2pm
Location: Started at Freeride Bike Co-op and rode through the center of the capital city, to the State House, along the bike path and returned via Main St.
Number of Riders: five bicyclists
Duration: 2.5 Miles, about 40 Minutes.
Weather: Mid 50's and a light rain Brrr! [55F = 13C]
Description: Seven riders gathered at Freeride and plotted a short route through downtown Montpelier to the State House, down the bike path and back to Freeride via Main St. Montpelier. Due to the cold temperatures and rain only five brave souls rode off into the cold and damp conditions.
Reception: The riders were warmed by the cheers, laughs and horns tooting from the supportive people of Montpelier.

Maybe next year...

This is the main attraction, for me, about the WNBR. I do not affiliate myself with the political agenda of the event but this aspect is what attracts me. The closest event to me has been Los Angeles and that's a 4 hr. one way trip if the weather and traffic cooperate. So I would make it a weekend trip.

Being able to experience in a city location, the same sort of exhilaration I get out in the remote desert is appealing. Knowing that for a short time you can stop worrying about the reactions of someone that sees you or the law and just ride your bike and enjoy being free of all encumbrances. I go back and forth about whether I would ride in one.

Barerider points out the main drawback, you most likely will end up on a video or a photo somewhere. I would have to resign myself to that in advance and prepare for consequences I may not like.

JohnP, I like the response the riders got in your report. Folks treating it for what it is, a sort of carnival flavor to the event. We need more like that.

Many people wear sunglasses, face paint and bizarre masks. Anonymity should not be a problem, especially for males, which has been mentioned.

I'd do it, but for all the trouble/hassle and expense to drive out to LA and back. That surreal, fun and for a cause that I support!

I have found myself on most of the published videos of the rides that I have been on, whether any acquaintance would recognise me from the fleeting images is doubtful. I don't have a problem with being recognised, and have always admitted to being a naturist if asked or it has been relevant to a conversation. My bike has discrete frame stickers saying 'Nacktradfahrer' that have never been queried.

Would I take part in a WNBR in my home town?  Probably.
