Nighttime naturism
« on: July 24, 2017, 10:36:09 AM »
Woke up around 3am last night, wide awake and no idea why. Lay there for a while... not going to sleep and getting irritated with myself, before I decided to go for a walk (sans clothing much to my wife's disgust: "where are you going? that's just weird"). Very quiet and still on the streets - the only movement was neighbourhood security lights switching on as I walked down our road. I expected to see a few foxes out and about but it seemed like I was the only one stupid enough to be awake at that time. It was quite cold with some mist in the air but weirdly I didn't feel it. Perhaps if I had stopped for a while I might have, but walking, I felt completely comfortable.
Briefly considered walking up to the main road, but even at that time of night there's still a few cars going past, perhaps one every 10 to 15 mins. And I'm just not sure what the reaction would be of a driver whizzing past some naked guy wandering around at 3am. Would have loved to though because it really was nice out.

And that's the end of my night time "trip report"  :P

Welcome to the night strollers, Anthony. When one lives in town it's sometimes the best time to get out and enjoy the air. If you decide to venture a bit further don't worry about traffic - you can usually hear it coming in plenty of time to find cover. Cover doesn't need to be much, as drivers are too busy looking where they're going to notice much on either side. If you're concerned with being seen cyclists or pedestrians are more of a problem because you can't hear them coming so you need to keep an eye open for them, though I've found they're never a problem, too intent on getting where they're going at that time of day to do more than give you a curious look.

I know what you mean about the temperature - I've found even with frost or snow on the ground it's not uncomfortable; I guess that's down to personal physiology as much as anything, though there could be a bit of adrenaline boost helping the unfamiliar situation.

Good luck and enjoy!

I'm in a small village so not a lot of cycle traffic I think, but good point about other walkers - I guess I might not always be the only insomniac around.
The problem with looking for cover is, in my mind, it turns the activity from "I'm doing nothing wrong" into "I'm doing nothing wrong but now it looks like I am (if I'm not careful)". Maybe the answer is to carry something to cover up with (which I'm unenthusiastic about, but perhaps it's the better option).

I’ve been hiking in the day when it’s cold but not at night. Was it windy? I think this makes a difference. When I was active I felt comfortable even though it was chilly. But if it’s windy it cools you off quickly.

We were camping once in Furnace Creek in Death Valley and I got up a little after midnight to hit the restroom. On the way back to the tent I took a detour out in an open area to wander naked under the desert sky for a bit. It felt completely different than a day hike simply because of the silence, stars and night sky.

Wonderful!

Cover just means stepping into a shadow or next to a tree so the passing motorist is less likely to notice you, as oppose to standing under a streetlight where he might spot you 😁

Due to the entirely average English summer, I once again haven't seen enough sunlight to get a tan. Less worried about a motorist seeing me - more worried they'll be blinded by the gleaming white reflection of their headlights hitting me...

I can see the headline now: "Embarrassingly white Naturist causes car crash at night"

Out here where I live the roads all have barbed wire fences on both sides.  No chance to hide at all.  I don't want to be naked out playing in the traffic so I don't go walking naked on the roads.   Not that I mind being seen, but if I'm walking "in the woods" near the road and get seen it has a different legal status than being out on the road.

When I lived in Albuquerque, NM, USA, I would go walking outside at night.  Even visiting Albuquerque.  Life is good after midnight.

I have hiked in rural East Texas and Louisiana at night and it is darker. I guess the trees and undergrowth block and absorb the light and you need a light of some sort.

In the desert, even without the moon, you can see where you are going. Starlight, moonlight, it’s all good. The contrasts in the landscape make it easier to see features and that changes the experience.

The night wraps you up and since human’s night vision really only sees the contrast, not the colors it is less likely anyone will see details at a distance. It’s a kind of shield or protection.

We are more likely to be walking the desert neighborhood at night under a full moon light. The rattlesnakes are a hazard. Almost missed seeing one in the shadows of a tree one night in Sabino Canyon. I take a flashlight to illuminate the shadows. The rest is lit up like day. Hiding behind something in the desert terrain doesn't work. We are just there exposed, if someone were to drive by, which would be a neighbor.

In the eighties, living in a suburban neighborhood, I would get friends to do a naked walkabout once or twice a year. There was always something to hide behind. I made sure that something was in the ready and was on a full alert, which I enjoyed immensely. When I was a young teenager, we would sneak around past curfew. It was fun stealth stuff, but we were dressed except once or twice for a short time.

Damn technology. With the growing popularity of electric vehicles we may not be able to hear them coming :-)

I'm with you there.  As a young teen in the 1950s I would sneak out naked on warm summer nights and go several blocks from home.  I lived in a typical older neighborhood of single family homes.  Large mature maple, elm, and other trees lined the streets, about 3 feet in diameter.  Mature bushes grew in most front yards.  Cars were parked here and there at the curbs.   There were street lights on the corners lighting intersections.

We could see the headlights of cars before we heard them, often before they came around a corner.  There was always a tree, or car, or bush to hide behind.  It was late and a quiet town.  I didn't have to hide very often.  Going naked through town in the night was a big rush.

In the 1970s I was staying in a caravan at a state park campground while doing a small construction job.  The place had little evening entertainment and since it was off season I hadn't seen other guests.  I went out walking naked through the park and walked all over.  I may have been the only camper there.  It was another of my early nude experiences.  Thinking about that experience I remember going naked in the night, but I don't remember which park it was nor what particular construction I was doing.

That sounded heartfelt, Hillwalker, almost as if one of them just sneaked up on you .. 😉

Lol. I have been crept up on by them as i walk across roads on my hikes. Tomorrow i expect to be doing a 16 mile walk naked. I will have to cross a couple of small country lanes so i will keep an eye as well as an ear open.
