My comment about the UK parliament considering this wasn't about legislation but about the fact that there are people in positions of power still thinking in the 50's. There is an irony, a control freak out of control. ;D

Quote from: Ian
What I had not seen, and still have not, is anything that suggests a change in law is required, possible or desired to deal with this as the current legislation on discrimination already covers this.

It sounds as though the women that have to deal with this type of paleo behavior should get themselves organized and force change through action. That doesn't have to be a protest or boycott, but simply a clear-eyed, industry wide refusal to kow-tow to convention. I am sure that some will lose their job but if it that important . . . ??

Demanding that a law be written to address a dress code is a bit over the line.

Any imposition that causes injury to another, an action that one should be responsible for, isn't over the line, be it negligent, intentional, or control freaks that don't care about others pain, or well-being.

I've been barefoot as best that I can for several years, now. I pulled my cowboy boots (heels) that I used to live in, out of the closet last week and wore them. I couldn't wait to take them off in a very short time. I was getting crippled and pain in numerous spots in less than an hour. A taller guy, who walks funny. Those shoes are damaging and extreme. They might as well expect women to be chained and hobbled on spikes...actually, now thinking about it, they are on spikes and hobbled.....

The bra requirement is another similar issue. It's prudery causing physical damage and discomfort.

I haven't worn my cowboy boots in years. Maybe I should drag 'em out and see how they fit. I might end up donating :'( them to charity.

My wife can't wait, after getting home, to take her bra off. She says she hates the way it constricts and that it is uncomfortable. Yet, she won't go out without wearing one. When I met her she never wore one. She says that after bearing two kids she sees it as inappropriate for her to not wear one.

Is a puzzlement! - King Mongkut of Siam

I do know that many men have posted that the women in their life come to a different view of themselves and nudity after having kids. Why this is I don't know. I do wish more women and mothers would chime in. It is difficult and frustrating to bumble around in the dark.

I am told that I don't understand! I believe them. Yet they don't explain. Very frustrating. :o :-\
I think I shall slowly and carefully explore this.
If you don't hear from me in a while, send help. ;)

I often point out to mothers that I too have acquired sagging tits.

It's the youth thing. We don't have elders, we have old folks. The body is hidden and consequently people develop false illusions about body image. We all need to hang together naked and doing things together. People would not think less of each other because of what they wear or what shape and style the other is encased in.

"What science again?", as some of my acquaintances seem to say when confronted with facts. Gravity takes it's toll as my wife is fond of saying. I remember my sister in law and her description of a nude beach saying in effect "Things need to be up where they belong". Now knowing that gravity has done it's thing to her body she's not so critical.

As for bras; Mrs. Walker being what people consider well-endowed used to wear those frilly lacy things more or less to cover her nipples. Those bras were more fr show as she described and less for support. Since retirement she will only wear a bra when we go out in public such as shopping. After a few hours or so the complaints of' "I can't breathe", "My ribs hurt" or "My boobs feel squashed" begin. She'll often reach under her top to remove her bra upon arriving home; often before any other clothing. Or she'll have me undo the clasps while in the car. One skill I still have from the old days; I can still undo a bra one handed!

Just a few more quick comments; I've not had Cowboy boots since childhood. If I knew why women changed their body attitudes after childbirth maybe I'd still be with my first wife and not have gone through those dark times. I remember when elders were respected. Maybe with the longer lifespan we are seen as old folks, more of a burden than a font of knowledge. And just a thought about body image. Has it become more of an issue with the ability to photo shop, airbrush and the advent of plastic surgery?

Why do women wear high heels and not men?  Why do we consider high heels to be attractive?  Who first thought of such an impractical idea?  High heels puzzle me.  I do find them attractive/sexy/smart or whatever on a suitable foot/ankle/leg but I can't help thinking that's because I have been conditioned to do so and how that happened is an equal mystery.  What is it about making the foot look as if it is on tiptoe that we find attractive?

I think it is because the tip-toe pose accentuates the curves of calf, thigh and bottom which most men find attractive in young women.

I've seen and heard that the higher the heel the more the butt is "pushed" out.
I believe high-heels are as damaging to the body as corsets were.

It makes for more shift in a walk. It makes the legs look longer. It give shorter women more confidence, and taller ones more parity among taller men. Taller people tend to get more promotions, along with culturally prettier beings. Another reason is conformity and fashion. Look at the runway models that women are supposed to emulate. Men are taller generally with a higher center of gravity, and they lead the biz world. Women have to compete with them and high heels are an edge. They are made to look sleek. All of these fairly stupid notions.

Men wear high heels, too.

The boots are for riding with stirrups, protecting from brush and high water. A knight needed boots and association with that place on a pillar continues. Some people call them manly footwear. If you walk into a bar where all the guys are wearing boots, you will look and feel short. Superficially, the taller guy gets picked first.

Yeah, Jbee. But only if you buy into the whole philosophy.

As you say though, reality does tend to alter the behavior. When the boots are on the ground it makes a difference. Even though it is silly.

Yes,  I read that high heels were once unisex as they were a way of stopping the shoes/boots from slipping out of the stirrups.
Oddly enough there was a section in a programme about sexism on tv in the last few days (Channel 4 I think) where a female journalist was examining the ins and outs of high heels versus flats.  The business of it pushing the belly forward and the posterior out was mentioned which emphasises child bearing potential and excites deep evolutionary stirrings in the male.  The journo also did a test.  She stood in the streets asking pedestrian passers by a totally pointless survey question.  She did it in flat shoes - almost no takers.  She did it in high heels - a majority of takers mostly male.  We are the slaves of our ancient biological programming.

I suspect that  the attention she got with the high heel shoes had more to do with being recognized as a modern "hooker" outfit than any ancient biological programming.

Isn't the modern "hooker" outfit just a present day exploitation of the biological programming.

Perhaps.  But I doubt that a million years of biological programming would recognize a particular modern shoe fashion.
