That's a hike that looks more familiar to me.
There are even places where I can find water like that, the small spring, not the big pool.
The Tamarisk tree (aka saltcedar) is a bad word up here. It is considered a invasive species and people work hard at eradicating it. It takes over any water feature.
The mineral deposits are a good indicator for water. Usually underground, but occasionally residue from a flood that is evaporating.
